As my readers know, I recently relocated to Chicago after spending the better part of the past year hopping between various points in the Philippines and the U.S. While I’m not dumb enough to claim that the Windy City is paradise—what with its horrific metro system, wacky weather and war zone-level of bloodshed—my experiences over the past year show that Chicago is amazingly underrated among major U.S. cities. Here’s why.

1. The people are extremely nice (by city standards)

I don’t want to overstate the politeness of Chicagoans: if you want really nice, you’ll have to move out to the more rural parts of the Midwest or Mountain West states. But if you’re used to big city people being various degrees of asshole—the helpful assholes of New York City, the fake-nice assholes of L.A., or the fuck-you-and-die assholes of Portland—the Windy City might just surprise you.

In contrast to other big American cities, Chicago retains a distinctly blue-collar character. If you strut around like you’re better than everyone else, you’ll get slapped down hard, but if you act like a normal human being, people will show you the same respect. For example, when I went to the Pitchfork Music Festival last year, I wore my Sonic Youth Goo T-shirt on the first day. All the way down on the L (Chicago’s subway/metro system and back), people kept complimenting me on the shirt or asking what it was. That would never happen in New York.

2. Girls are sweeter and more approachable

Going hand-in-hand with the previous point, Chicago girls are more pleasant and feminine than girls in other major cities. Mind you, we’re not talking Filipino-level feminine, but if you’re inured to big city girls being intolerable twats, Chicago will shatter your expectations.

It’s likely because of the relative niceness of the girls here that Chicago is massively underrepresented in the manosphere and neomasculine world. While cities such as Washington, D.C. and Toronto punch way above their weight in terms of manosphere representation (ROK’s own Roosh Valizadeh is from D.C.), I’m currently the only major Chicago-based ‘sphere writer I can think of.

3. It’s inexpensive

Again, this is in comparison to other big cities: there’s no doubt a pile of bumfuck villages in flyover country where you can live more cheaply. But on the cost of living index, Chicago blows New York and L.A. out of the water. To give you an example, my friend pays $1,000 a month for a two bedroom apartment in Lincoln Park, one of the city’s most yuppified and expensive neighborhoods. Try getting a 2BR in New York that isn’t either at least twice that cost or in the ghetto.

On the other metrics of living, Chicago also stacks up better than its similarly-sized counterparts. Everything from groceries to nightlife is either cheaper or similarly priced to other big cities. While the CTA has to be one of the worst major city transit agencies in America, the L, Metra, and buses still allow you to live without a car. Even the tax situation, while not ideal, is better than in New York or California, and Illinois has the added bonus of a Republican governor to gum up the left’s works.

4. Concealed carry is legal here

It took years of litigation, but in 2013, Illinois finally joined the vast majority of states that allow citizens to exercise their Second Amendment rights by passing a concealed carry law. Even better, Illinois is a “must-issue” state, meaning that unless you’ve committed a major felony, the state has no choice but to give you your permit provided you pass all the tests and pay all the fees. That includes Cook County and Chicago.

While the Land of Lincoln’s concealed carry law is far from ideal—the fees are high, and Illinois lacks reciprocity agreements with other must-issue states—it’s a damn sight better than the arbitrary gun grabber regimes that rule most blue states. Concealed carry has been such a huge success in Illinois that it resulted in “Chiraq’s” murder rate dropping for the first time in years.

5. Chicago is somewhat immune to SJW entryism

It’s easy to complain about the systemically corrupt nature of Chicago and Cook County government, but this corruption actually insulates the city from the worst excesses of leftism. Chicago’s antiquated machine politics and “fuck you, pay me” mentality dissuade lunatic moral crusaders such as NYC’s Bill de Blasio from getting into power and imposing all sorts of insane SJW edicts. In fact, the recent Chicago mayoral election featured a de Blasio-esque candidate who was swiftly curb-stomped by the electorate.

As much as Chicago kleptocracy can put a damper on my life, whether it’s the godawful transit system or the ripoff-level parking meters, it’s a price worth paying to keep the SJWs out. In fact, I encourage every trustafarian Midwestern hipster crying about “manspreading” to follow her dream of fronting an “art noise” duo and move to NYC or Portland. Go far, far away from the “boring” Midwest and “scary” Chicago and never come back.

While I don’t plan on living in Chicago for the rest of my life, it’s a pretty good place for men to settle down. As much as I may grumble about the obnoxiousness of the L or the fact that it’s 50 degrees out in May, I’d rather be here than anywhere else in the U.S.

I dislike chicago but the points raised here are good. This is what living in the midwest is like.

If you enjoy chicago also try Milwaukee and Minneapolis

I was just there a few weeks ago. Lots of cute friendly girls, lots of big titty ones too. Also, the downtown area is beautiful and I cant remember seeing a hipster all weekend in the city

The Hub of America, for better or worse.

Things I like best about Chicago: it has my family, my roots, good job options, solid music/dance scene, the amazing downtown/Loop, architecture, trains, dive bars, and the hockey team.

Things I dislike most about Chicago: ethnically and socially segregated as hell, neighborhood-ism/zip code snobbery, Midwest mentality, suburban sprawl, the baseball teams are pathetic and a disgrace and should be contracted.

Chi-Town represent!

What can I say about my beloved city. We have world-class restaurants and great food overall. The greatest sports fans in America who breathe and bleed our Bears, Cubs, Bulls and White Sox. Great people and nice girls.

Perhaps the most underrated city in the U.S.

As an ex-Chicagoan now living in Singapore (will spend a month in the summer there soon), this article really makes me miss and appreciate the city. If it wasn't for the 6-month long winters, it would be a viable spot for me to post at for life. I actually have a datasheet on the place but reading this topic, makes me view it with a fresh set of eyes. When compared to NYC/LA/Miami, it truly is a gem and people just have fun without giving a fuck about whats going on in the outside world.

San Francisco women are still more feminine, however.

German and polish genes there. Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and southern Minnesota are great spots to find brunettes with big tits, thick thighs and glowing skin..that 80s style body.

Contrast that with Tennessee, Kentucky, West Viginia which is thinner girls, red heads, scottish, irish and some german genes

South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama adds in more historically french genes, and you've got a similar look to french canadian girls.

That is the HOT girls though, there are still fatties everywhere in every state.

I love the city, as I live within a few hours from it and have had a few meetups there. A few things that popped out...

- $1,000 a month for a two bedroom apartment in Lincoln Park seems really good...almost too good to be true.

- Concealed carry is legal here...interesting, and glad you mentioned the recent change. Illinois has always been a bitch for gun-lovers.

- Interesting take on the antiquated bully political system preventing SJW lefties. Great point.

Gotta agree, everyone was friendly when I visited there.

The whole vibe is great, I also noticed it seems to be a young city.

The only deal breaker is the damn winters. I'll stick to so-cal for the weather.

My absolute weakness. If it wasn't for my job and the dogshit weather I'd post up in the Midwest. One of the few places in the U.S in my opinion where the ease of meeting girls is as good if not better than some foreign countries.

Yes, especially Minneapolis. For those looking for a tad milder climate, Indianapolis and Columbus will also suffice as solid Midwest locations as well.

If it were like it is right now all year round, it would be Miami on steroids. But then you'd also have tons of crazy people and it would soon turn into ... places like Miami.

The weather keeps your grounded and more normal. Does it get old? Of course it does. But that's life.

This city may be slightly insulated in ways from the annoyingness of other cities, but as far as women go, it still is America (more or less), I'm sad to say.

Only been to O'hare airport and the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. I was not impressed by the talent there at all. Travelling to the Northeast and Midwest has made me feel blessed to come from a place with year round sunshine. When women cover their entire bodies for half a year, they get complacent and let their bodies go. That is why when you got to Miami, LA, or Hawaii you can't believe how many beautiful women you see every single day. They have to keep their bodies "beach ready" all year round.

1. Chicago people are nicer than those in some big cities and not as nice as those in say Pittsburgh, Cincinnati or Minneapolis. I actually got along well with those supposedly horrid New Yorkers.
2. Disagree greatly on the women. The names Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton come to mind.
3. It's not as expensive as NY, SF, BOS, or LA but relatively speaking it is much more expensive than it was in the 1950's when my parents settled there. Not only that but Chicago has become very Europeanized, with little left of the middle class.
4. Despite a recent court ruling Chicago and Illinois are not the least bit gun friendly. Not only that but things have deteriorated so badly that if I still lived there I wouldn't even think about going out without packing something.
5. Chicago is not immune to the ravages of the SJW crowd. Ask Milo Yiannopolous if you don't believe me.
6. One additional observation. I greatly miss the Chicago of my long lost youth but it has been deteriorating badly since the 1950's and is a lot more like Detroit than it cares to admit.

Chicago is definitely much better than the coastal cities (you couldn't pay me enough money to live in any of those crap holes) but it is not as good as it was 10 yrs ago and is suffering from much of the same problems that the coastal cities are. Its definitely more expensive to live here now and the crime really has gotten much worse. The women are the same as American women are everywhere- mediocre, and the city is in serious financial trouble. That said, its probably the only large city I would live in at this point in time in the US. Younger guys should definitely consider mid sized cities like Nashville, Indianapolis or Boise with lower costs of living and less jaded big city people.

Don't forget Denver.

Cost of housing has gone through the roof there, but for the most part the climate is nicer, infrastructure is actually functional, racial tensions are low, and the women tend to be noticeably more pleasant than the average American woman (if not extremely so).

Seconded. Never met a person from Colorado I didn't like, and that includes both visiting the state and meeting people from there.

But I would still worry for it's future. It's getting a large influx of transplants from other parts of the U.S, especially the coastal states. I believe more people per capita moved to Denver than any other major city last year.

Chicago's gnarly due to the large population and the paradise-esque logistics (dense walking city rather than sprawling driving city). My only main issues are the extreme wind/cold in the winter (bad pairing) and the high rate of violent crime. I'd recommend posting up in Evanston. Really nice walking suburban town, 12 miles north of downtown Chicago. Northwestern mafia!
