This whole shabby affair really is a shame. George Miller, the director of "The Road Warrior" pulled off something very special in cinematic art in 1981 with his movie.

"The Road Warrior" really is a visionary science fiction film, a pulse-pounding action film, and just a great story. It's easy to forget it now, but it was endlessly imitated in the 1980s and 1990s. It spawned countless "apocalypse" movies all through that period, and even after.

But Miller apparently found it necessary to "sell out" in order to make the big time. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but it looks like he wanted to make it big in America, and to do that he needed to dilute his masculine, balls-to-the-wall message.

The big studios probably sat him down and told him that to get the big financing, he was going to have to compromise. He was going to have to play ball with America's little feminist party lines.

What you could get away with in Australia, you can't get away with in the US. Sad.

I literally winced when the sequel came out in the mid-1980s, "Beyond Thunderdome." I have nothing against Tina Turner as far as it goes, but it was clear that inserting her into the movie was a ploy to capitalize on her trending popularity, which was undergoing something of a revival in the 1980s. But it just didn't feel right. She just seemed out of place among all the leather-clad barbarians.

Same thing with having all these kids in the film. There was a whole ridiculous sequence with Mel Gibson stumbling on a "tribe " of kids looking for their lost leader or some nonsense.

So they turned what had been one of the most masculine movies ever made--The Road Warrior--into some sort of social statement where feral kids and female singing icons had center stage. Mad Max was reduced to just being a cab driver with brass knuckles.

Sad, sad, sad.

These movies and TV shows which depict women kicking ass and taking names are just adding to the delusion that women can compete with men on a physical level.

I'm currently watching The Walking Dead, and although I'm really enjoying the show, it is insane just how "badass" the female protagonists are portrayed to be - jumping trees, shooting targets and hitting them from half-a-mile away, swinging samurai swords and doing pull-ups. Another trend I'm noticing is that they aren't just shown to be physically as capable as men, but also as having some sort of moral compass - You'll often see chix on these shows making tough decisions and using sound logic...that to me is the bigger BS.

Yes, it really is pathetic.

The studios do that as part of their whole "cover my ass" ethic.

They have no faith in the intelligence of the average American (maybe with some justification), and they assume that the average Joe Sixpack dork from Rottencrotch, Missouri will freak out if he hears anything that sounds even vaguely "foreign."

The culture here is based on celebrating stupidity and the lowest common denominator. You see, to keep the average Walmart-haunting blimp in line, we have to tell him that he's worth something, even if the reality is quite different.

And that's the whole ethic here. American popular culture always, always takes the low road. It always caters to the lowest common denominator, which is the paltroonish mob. Instead of trying to somewhat elevate the viewer, they cater to his worst, stupidest instincts.

What's worse, the dorks here are proud of being stupid. They don't want to be elevated.

It's the same mentality that thinks we need to "colorize" old black and white films, that thinks we need to dub all foreign movies because the shitheads here can't handle reading subtitles and listening to foreign languages.

You really see the difference when you live for a time in a foreign country, especially Europe.

I'd better stop now before I go on a full-blown rant against the US pop culture...

Man, the copy I saw I got from Kazaa. Didn't know it had been dubbed. When I played it, I thought 'WTF? What's wrong with the voices?' hahaha.

Watched it for a while for the entertainment value, then found a proper copy.

Everyone loves to make fun of the "hicks" in the Midwest when I've found that Californians, Floridians, and even the average New Yorker to be much dumber.

There isn't a whole lot to do in the Midwest, so, there is a big reading culture and a natural curiosity to learn about the world that is absent on the coasts. In my opinion anyway.

Then there's the suspiciously-uniform reviews that resemble the universal-acclaim for 'Gone Home' (video game thing about lesbians) and 'Channel Orange' (African-american rapper admits he's bisexual just before release), both of which were thoroughly-mundane works of art.



Remember, progressives have no actual critical taste: what is 'on message' is a work of genius art, and what is 'off narrative' is terrible, dangerous art. As such, I'm convinced if Channel Orange had been a work by a straight white rapper, and Gone Home had been about two straight teenagers in love, the critics would have ignored them.

This is why what is being offered to us as adult entertainment increasingly-resembles the moralistic cartoons of my childhood, like Captain Planet, or that early 70's version of Yogi Bear where he was obsessed with pollution and recycling. As such, I increasingly choose to ignore popular culture, understanding it's Jack Chick-style moral lectures for impressionable, juvenile minds with the sins changed to progressive ones, such as Existing Whilst White).

I can only assume this pushback suggests the film is deliberately on-message, and, as such, can be safely ignored. No film has ever changed my life, so even if it was a work of genius - highly-unlikely considering what Western Cinema has devolved into - I'm happy to take that risk of missing out on it.

One of my rules of thumb in life has always to be deeply-suspicious of those who scream the loudest at the rest of society about their hyper-morality: these were always the grown men and women who would try and isolate me from others when I was a child, and then the creepy, sexual questions would start - questions that make no sense to a pre-sexual kid. (Eve Ensler's probing a six year old about her Vagina is very familiar).

You've all been seeing the deeply-disturbed sexualities of Anti-Gamergates like Arthur Chu and Sarah Butts that their hyper-morality is hiding.

So, food for thought:

- why would George Miller be interested in working with a woman with a creepy, troubling interest in the sexuality of underage children?

- why would George Miller be trying to so hard to be recognised as a Good Person by trumpeting feminism?

Why would George Miller sink a franchise in the 80's, by adding an thoroughly-unwanted element to a male-orientated action movie?

^^^^ probably one of the most tragic and effed up things about Beyond Thunderdome is that I and plenty of other Americans saw the sexy nubile teenage "tribe" girls and just assumed that Australian girls were hot!

(my buddy in Jersey is still convinced Australia is full of good looking beach bunny women!)

Edit: if I recall correctly I think I got my first "boner that wouldn't go away" and kiss on the cheek after I took some teenage girl I knew to that movie on a "date" (!)

So Miller basically fell in line with the feminist ideology of the entertainment industry and made Charlize Theron the main heroine in a movie series which originally had a strong red pill message. Especially the first Mad Max film.

I just hope Will Ferrell doesn't mess up the remake of Manimal and have feminist undertones throughout the film. But not a lot of people remember that show, lol.
