A lost tourist has landed in court after tapping a Dubai policewoman on the shoulder to get her attention.

The 49-year-old from Kazakhstan, who was at the Dubai Mall Metro Station when the incident happened, is facing charges of molestation and assault after an attempt to get directions went horribly wrong.

He said: “I’m a tourist and wanted to get to Dubai Mall. I saw a policewoman at the station. She was talking to some other people, so I tapped her on the shoulder and she turned around and started yelling.”

The tourist, who appeared at Dubai Court of First Instance this week, is also accused of assaulting two policemen after they came over to help their colleague.

The 21-year-old Emirati policewoman said: “I was talking with some people when the defendant touched my arm near my right shoulder.

“He asked me about the location of Dubai Mall and I pointed in the direction. I asked him why he touched me and he answered in his own language, which I didn’t understand.”

The officer said the tourist then touched her hand and she became angry, telling the man to come with her to the police post, but he refused.

“Two policemen came and asked him to come to police post and he resisted, pushing them away. He even tried to touch me again but the policemen stopped him,” she said.

The incident happened on December 2, last year, about 4pm.

One of the male officers, a 22-year-old Emirati, said he intervened after hearing the policewoman telling the tourist not to touch her.

“I asked him to come with me, he refused and pushed me. I restrained him with my colleague,” he said.’

The court heard that CCTV footage shows the defendant speaking with the policewoman and touching her arm.

If found guilty, the defendant could be jailed for up to six months and deported.

The defendant denies molestation and assault.

A verdict is due on May 17.

The Dubai authorities must be blowing their stacks right now. Nothing says "don't come spend money here" like getting arrested for asking for directions.

I don't fault the police involved in this situation, the tourist was being an idiot, I really can't stand pushy people, especially adults who cut in line or interrupt conversations like this guy did. It wasn't an emergency, this guy wanted directions so he went and interrupted the conversation and invaded the officer's personal space. The female officer was busy speaking to some people and this dickhead couldn't wait a minute or two for her to finish, so he touches her, not once, but twice. You don't touch a fucking cop, ever and especially a female one in an Arab country of all places, I wouldn't do it at home in Canada either, a cop in a uniform is going to a bit on edge at all times anyway as its part of their job, they shouldn't have to put with pushy idiots like this guy, she should have tazed his dumbass.

To play devil's advocate he did touch her on the shoulder and on her hand . Socially speaking that's not really a misstep . Those are generally areas of the body we can touch to get someone's attention .

He was being vaguely rude, therefor it totally wasn't a waste of state resources and time to arrest and charge him with a sex crime.

This isn't so clear. I hate that when someone touches me without my permission and consider it an aggressive act. It sounds like the policewoman gave him plenty of opportunities to get himself out of it, but he remained belligerent. Which leads me to suspect that she was right to begin with.

Consider this recent example where a representative threatens to drop someone's ass who touched him aggressively. The hand shake was aggressive followed by a touch to the shoulder. I think he was fully within his rights and handled it correctly.

Where in the article does it say that he is being charged with a sex crime? It says that he is being charged with molestation and assault, which he did by repeatedly touching the officer and then by pushing the officers who intervened, molestation doesn't necessarily have to be of a sexual nature and I don't think that the UAE and Dubai in particular care too much about wasting state resources, given their track record.

There's more to this than simply touching a policewoman.

Dubai isn't Kuwait guys! They're relatively tolerant unless you openly flaunt their rules and act like a dick.

It doesn't help that the dude if from Khazak; Arabs are pretty fucking racist, especially to those from poorer states.

I suspect if he'd just apologised to start with, it would have been over in 30 seconds.
