Actually this gives us an opportunity to look at how top-tier women get played by Alpha Men -- sort of the opposite of what we're talking about on the Johnny Depp thread.

Faithfull was descended from nobility and by the age of 19 was a pop star in England. That exploded into her becoming a UK sex symbol when she was amongst the first to pose in sexy schoolgirl outfits -- possibly the inspiration for Britney Spears. But she went one better than Britney since she also had an angelic schoolgirl voice to match.

And then she met Mick Jagger. She brought to him her culture and class. One of her books inspired "Sympathy for the Devil," and just her being with him allowed him to "culture climb" out of the rock ghetto and into higher society (back then rock was NOT a society thing, so this was a big deal).

And what did Mick give to Marianne in return?

Stress, unfaithfulness, and mind games that led to drug addiction and a near-death overdose. In the aftermath of that, he wrote "Wild Horses" and she wrote "Sister Morphine." He put "Sister Morphine" on an album and took credit for it along with writing partner Keith Richards.

Faithfull was largely absent from the pop scene in the 1970s. When she re-emerged in 1979 with the album "Broken English," she was a somewhat broken woman -- a ravaged former drug addict with a raspy voice and foul mouth.

No traces of the schoolgirl remained. The funny thing was, "Broken English" was pretty great, as far as art goes. Still, in the larger picture, she went from being the belle of the ball, so to speak, to a Jagger casualty.

The same thing had happened to Jagger's previous lover, Chrissie Shrimpton -- who Marianne had replaced -- but Marianne didn't see the warning signs or maybe thought she was above all that. She wasn't, sad to say.

Music trivia, the backing track for her biggest hit was created by Andrew Loog Oldham the RS producer, who simply substituted her voice for the oboe that is on the instrumental version. Unfortunately it's not on youtube for some reason but I do have that LP full of orchestral RS tunes like this:





Which is the reason why The Verve doesn't get a single penny from "Bittersweet Symphony", Oldham sued and won in court.

Sorry - but that woman left a husband and her child for a rock star. There is no sympathy in me for women like that. They get the faces they deserve in the end.

The traditional family unit protected women so when they age and look like shit they still have a caring husband who stays with her out of loyalty of smashing her when she was 20 and hot.

Mariann is 68.

James Woods is also 68, here he is still living large with his 20yr old girlfriend

Chasing fame and 'coolness'; infidelity; chasing high status rocks stars in an era of 'free love'; taking addictive drugs - these were all her own choices to make, and, as such, she can bear the consequences of her actions, (self-destruction, loss of custody of her son, addition, a ruined voice), exactly as a man would be expected to.

If it left her a broken wreck with every trace of beauty extinguished and the deadest eyes I've seen outside of a horror show, well, that was the destination at the end of the road she chose to walk.

Her post 80's albums get great reviews more for her status as Female Survivor Icon than anything noteworthy about the music: world-weary croaky-voiced Chanteuses are about as socially-relevant to the majority of the population as the Charleston. But isn't it great that she's still putting out records, surviving her own actions?
