For those of you learning Russian, you'll have noticed that many words share the same word base.

I'll provide some examples below:-

Быт: life

If you add a "ь" to the end, it'll be быть (to be)


Some other examples:-

После : after
Послевоенный : post war

Вот: here
Воткнуть: to stick it in

I recommend Roots of the Russian Language by George Z Patrick.

жить - to live
житель - inhabitant

but here it's a little tricky because
быть -to be
but...
забыть - to forget

Either way its good to learn roots like you said to help piece together the meaning of unfamiliar words if you don't have a Словарь (like слово for word )
