North Carolina Teen Writes Rejection Letter to Duke University's Rejection Letter
While reading about this impressive young man, Harold Ekeh, who was accepted to all 13 colleges he applied to, including all eight Ivy League schools.

https://gma.yahoo.com/long-island-high-s...ories.html

I came across this story, damn you clickbait, about a cunty teenage girl who thought she would be cute and reject Duke's rejection letter. Fortunately, Duke admissions had some balls and told her no, again. She goes by Siobhan even though her real name is Reece. Maybe I have that flipped.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/north-carolina-...d=30046771

Quote:Spring is here along with the angst of the college admissions process for high school seniors everywhere.

One North Carolina teenager decided to fight back with a rejection letter to the rejection letter she said she received from Duke University.

“Dear Duke University Admissions,” the letter written by 17-year-old Siobhan O’Dell begins. “Thank you for the rejection letter of March 26, 2015. After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me admission into the Fall 2015 freshman class at Duke.”

“This year I have been fortunate enough to receive rejection letters from the best and brightest universities in the country. With a pool of letters so diverse and accomplished I was unable to accept reject letters I would have been able to only several years ago,” she continues.

The teenager ends the letter with: "Therefore I will be attending Duke University's 2015 freshmen class. I look forward to seeing you then."

O’Dell posted the letter on Tumblr, where it quickly drew the Internet’s attention and drew calls for Duke University to reconsider her application. Unfortunately for O’Dell, going viral did not equal a spot in Duke’s freshman class.

O’Dell also posted to Tumblr on Tuesday the response she says Duke officials sent to her rejection to the rejection email.

“I understand how disappointed you are that we were unable to offer you a space in our incoming class,” the note reads. “I want to be honest with you and let you know that it’s very rare that we learn something that leads us to change our decision. In the last ten years we’ve received about 500 requests for a review…and changed the decision four times.”

Duke’s Dean of Undergraduate Admissions, Cristoph Guttentag, had no comment on O’Dell’s application when reached by ABC News.

The Durham, North Carolina-based school’s loss may be another college’s gain. O’Dell, who did not reply to ABC News, posted on her Instagram account that she has already been accepted to the University of South Carolina.

RE: North Carolina Teen Writes Rejection Letter to Duke University's Rejection Letter
Oh shit, she got into the University of South Carolina! Duke admissions officers must be losing sleep now!

That's like trying to use a 5 to inspire jealousy in an 8.

Pretty silly that these kids get salty over being rejected, like their particular brand of unique snow-flakery entitles them to acceptances everywhere.

If anyone is to feel salty, it's high-achieving Asian Americans, who regularly and systematically get passed over in favor of less qualified black and latino students, so universities can get their beloved diversity--where students are various shades of brown, and vote Democrat.

Well - I looked at that story you linked and found it more interesting. Guess how this wunderkind looks like?

Now that young man is highly qualified, but still his race gave him an additional edge to get that many positives:

Quote:Ekeh's impressive high school resume spans from conducting scientific research, to starting a college prep mentoring program, to serving as editor-in-chief of the newspaper and vice president of Model United Nations.

But Ekeh's true passion is medicine. He says he plans to attend medical school and specialize in neurosurgery.

It reminded me of a story I just read and posted online on Twitter:

Mindy Kalings - this obnoxious Indian comedian who ticks off every 5 reasons of Matt Forney's article on why not to date Indian girls - has a big brother who changed his CV to appear black and got then accepted by schools which have previously rejected him.

http://nypost.com/2015/04/05/mindy-kalin...ed-school/

Now the story is a bit funny, but the truth is that the current college as well as SAT system is thoroughly lacking. You have widespread cheating on SATs and other tests by Asians especially.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answ...-cheating/

Then you have affirmative action like those here plus the widest recipients of college brownie points are the uber-wealthy or even the famous (young Hollywood actors can pick and choose whether to go to Yale, Harvard or MIT - no qualifications necessary).

Now personally I have the least problem with affirmative action - they obviously lack suitable candidates. But the case above is funny as well, because in the application that Indian bloke even said that he had wealthy parents - so essentially he was a rich black man with luke-warm test results and was only accepted due to not being white, Indian or Asian. Personally I would make an exception for a rich black kid - he should go the route of Bush junior and have daddy pull some strings or pay for a library wing.

So options for average white and increasingly Indian or Asian Joe are:

[Image: you-went-full-retard-never-go-full-retard.jpg]

or go transgender pre-op:

[Image: images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTuumNA1IRjyxS5sJBuE_S...yEspA2avzr]

I guess there are many ways to get to Harvard.

But as I said - I don't blame anyone for taking advantage of what you have in life - anyone not born a billionaire should do that. If I were born black I would milk this cow dry as much as possible and I would not feel sorry about it a bit. But the story just struck me as funny about that Indian bloke just shaving his head and getting different pics to pass for black.

____________

As far as that Duke girl is concerned who had to be butt-hurt about being rejected.
She should go and suck some dicks professionally - they take porn stars now I have heard...

For a laugher, check this out. Official AAMC (US medical school association) tables showing what % of applicants with a given range of GPA and MCAT scores were accepted to at least 1 medical school. Comparing the tables will allow you to quantify how strong affirmative action is.

Really, check this link out. I compared acceptance rates at medical schools and put a few down down here in an easier format.

MCAT: 30
GPA: 3.00

Asian: 17% acceptance rate
White: 29% acceptance rate
Black: 73% acceptance rate

MCAT: 35
GPA: 3.40

Asian: 57% acceptance rate
White: 62% acceptance rate
Black: 89% acceptance rate

Add the quantity of applicants to the equation, and you end up with thousands of qualified guys with their ambitions shit on just for having the wrong skin color. There are bigger problems stacked against the average guy than divorce and custody statistics.

^^^I think you mixed up the MCAT and GPA on the last group.

Edit: Never mind, looks fixed now.

Women these days think they can shop for a man like they shop for a purse or a pair of shoes. Sorry ladies. It doesn't work that way.

Women are like sandwiches. All men love sandwiches. That's a given. But sandwiches are only good when they're fresh. Nobody wants a day old sandwich. The bread is all soggy and the meat is spoiled.

If gender identity is something you can simply "identify with" in order to qualify as that gender, then why not race?

Actually the left Is already on that. I think I posted about this awhile back in a different thread, or it might have been a different site like The Spearhead. Either way, CNN has this special they air a few times a year called Black in America...I think. They have done a number of them, and I think a few had different names, but I digress.

I was watching the second or maybe third iteration of the Black in America one a few years ago. They had that Soleidad O'Brian chick hosting it and on one part of the show they had this group in, I want to say Chicago, a outreach program being led by a African-American studies professor. They sat around doing consciousness raising, writing poems, and other group activities to discover what it meant to be...Drum roll please....Black in America....dah dah daaaahh.

So, one of the girls they were focusing on, especially with whether or not she can call herself black, was a middle eastern girl with some what dark skin....at least compared to whites. I forget where she and her family were from, it might have been Morocco or maybe Turkey or something. The point is that she did not have any African facial features and at most the color of her skin would put her somewhere around the beyonce or lighter category of darkness. So, after much struggle and group consciousness raising she and the group finally determined that she was, and could and should refer to herself as, BLACK.

I remember watching this and wondering what her parents, who were first generation immigrants, would think about it.

This is also why the left has been gradually replacing African-American or black with Person of Color (PoC) as a label. They want to build a coalition of non-whites that unify as PoC against whites and more conservative non-whites and those who pass as white, like Italians.

Women these days think they can shop for a man like they shop for a purse or a pair of shoes. Sorry ladies. It doesn't work that way.

If it's the commercial where she thinks she's invisible so she's groping some guy playing pick-up basketball, the line is something like an indignant "What? There are worse things in the world than an attractive woman touching your body!"

I've been watching some basketball lately, so hearing the names "Cliff Paul" and "Don Stockton" are starting to reach Clockwork Orange status with me. Yet, her commercial stands out as being particularly annoying.

Imagine if a corporation put out a commercial where the punchline involves a guy groping some chicks playing volleyball, and being indignant when caught.

Mindy's brother sounds like he's far more of a talent than Mindy.

Maybe Indians are onto something with the whole sons >> daughters thing.

Am I the only one who thought that her rejection rejection letter was funny?

It seemed to me that she has a sense of humour and wasn't expecting things to turn out any differently than they did.

"I can count on one hand, literally, the number of women I have ever met that can take that kind of advice, accept it and make use of it without their epic egos setting metaphorical fire to the conversation.

Most women "looking for advice" are in reality looking for someone to validate their cosmic victimhood, because it's not really their fault, because it's never their fault. This behavioural trait isn't absent among men, but when we fail society cares not, while when women fail there is no shortage of comforting platitudes on offer from every vector.

Agree. Trying to view every single story on the internet through the spoiled feminist lens is getting old.

Thought it was a funny letter. An actual entitled cunt would have threatened legal action via her dad or something.

I'm sorry, but I think this is hilarious.

"Rejecting" the rejection letter is actually a reasonably clever stunt, assuming that it was done tongue-in-cheek and with a sense of humor.

I actually laughed out loud at this.

Now, my answer would be different if I found out that she was not joking....

Fixed that for you.

It was correct the first time. Affirmative action for top universities is mostly a transfer of admissions from Asians to blacks and latinos.

Espenshade and Chung estimated in 2005 (Opportunity Cost of Admissions Preferences) that in the absence of affirmative action at top schools, Asians would get many more admissions, whites slightly more, with blacks and latinos much fewer.

Actual data had 51.4%, 9.0%, 7.9%, 23.7%, and 7.9% for whites, blacks, latinos, Asians, and other, respectively, as percentages of total admissions given (so sum of percentages is close to 100% [rounding]).

Estimates for no affirmative action were 52.8%, 3.3%, 3.8%, 31.5%, and 8.6%, respectively.

This aligns with intuition, since the Asian-white test score gap is smaller than that of the white-latino gap (below are Mexican Americans as a proxy), and much smaller than that of the white-black gap, even after family income is accounted for.

I can testify that there's a significant bias against blacks/asians at all levels. I'm starting at a top-20 business school this year and with veteran status I was able to beat out Indians who had 760 GMAT and 3.7 GPA's.

Fixed that for you.

It was correct the first time.

No, it was not. The accurate statement would have noted that high-scoring Asian Americans are passed over in favor of black, latino, AND white students with fewer purely academic qualifications, not just blacks and latinos. This is the reality of the situation.

The Espenshade and Chung estimation has been proven inaccurate with time. Their estimation predicted that white rates of admission/representation would increase slightly. They were inaccurate: from 1990 to 2005, large declines in white enrollment were seen in all of the states observed in which public post-secondary institutions were prohibited from the consideration of race in admissions (Texas, Florida, and California - the schools observed were UCLA, UC-Berkeley, UCSD, UT-Austin, and the Univ. of Florida). Decreases in the non-hispanic white share of the populations in these states only partially explain this - the reality is that many whites were being pushed out of the running by high-achieving Asian applicants. Of all the schools observed in each of the three aforementioned states (Texas, Florida, California), only UCLA's white population held relatively steady (1% decline from 1990 to 2005).

More specifically, white males saw a particularly dramatic decline at all five of the universities analyzed in the three states. UCLA remained the most stable again (less than 4 percentage points in decline), but every other institution saw declines north of 10% and as high as 12% in their white male populations. White women, by contrast, saw their numbers go up.

Blacks and Hispanics saw substantial declines, as predicted, but so did whites. Asians were massive beneficiaries, as predicted, but not solely at the expense of blacks and latinos. Espenshade and Chung underestimated the impact that the removal of AA would have on White Americans.

If we are to say that the numbers after the prohibition of AA can be taken as a fair proxy for the number of "less qualified" members of other groups occupying spots that would otherwise have gone to Asian-Americans, then we cannot say that there are not a substantial number of whites involved here.

More evidence of this can be seen in the example of elite secondary schools. Stuyvesant High School is one of NYC's 8 specialized public schools that relies strictly on test scores for admission - race is not a consideration at all. Asians, who account for 14% of the city's populace, make up just under three-quarters of the student body at Stuyvesant. Whites account for just about 24% of the school's population. Blacks and Hispanics are nearly non-existent (28 combined out of a total of 3300 students at the school).

Of the 5700 students offered admission in 2013 at all 8 of New York's elite public high schools, just 5% were black and 7% hispanic. 24% of the admits were white, and 53% were Asian.
In the 1970's, blacks made up 12% of the student body at Stuyvesant (more across the 8 schools combined). Whites accounted for 79% of the student body at this time. What happened following the application of completely race-blind admissions and the introduction of a growing and competitive Asian-American candidates? Blacks are nearly gone, and whites have seen their representation cut dramatically (more than 50 percentage points).

Again, if we are to say that numbers after the prohibition of AA can be taken as a fair proxy for the number of "less qualified" members of other groups occupying spots that would otherwise have gone to Asian-Americans, then we cannot say that there are not a substantial number of whites involved. The numbers here very clearly indicate that whites are getting pushed out as well, and in greater numbers than blacks or latinos.

There's another aspect of this debate that has also been completely ignored: Non-merit based admissions exist that are not primarily racially driven.

When these discussions come up, very little attention is ever really paid to the fact that non-merit based admissions are not all racially driven. Some of them are linked to a) legacy and b) affluence (or both). Admissions on these criteria are quite common (resulting in very significant boosts in admission probability), and the beneficiaries are almost always white, not black, asian, or latino.

Academically strong Asian-American students are not always passed up at a given school for a black/hispanic/native-american student with lower test scores. They are quite often passed up for white students with similar scores or even slightly lower scores who have no advantage over their Asian peer except for a) their family name and/or b) their affluence.

There are other forms of veiled "affirmative-action" policies that largely benefit whites in admissions are many elite universities in the USA. College sports provide a little known example of this just such a phenomenon. I've written on this before, so I'll just quote myself:

(10-22-2011 01:45 AM)Excelsior Wrote:  The lowest scores in each incoming Ivy class are not the downtrodden affirmative action charity cases you portray. They are elite, upper-class whites (usually males) from elite prep schools with very strong pedigrees and sometimes (not always), legacy. These are kids who come in here with 22-24 ACT scores (average score at my school is about 32 out of 36) and coast right through admissions. Your low-stat, bottom-of-the-class admit is more than likely a WASP as opposed to a minority.

How do they get in? Golden handshakes and facetime. That is how this world works-facetime is their god, and a very generous one at that. It is a very small world up here, and they take full advantage of that.

These kids walk in here, dick around for four years, graduate with a 2.8-3.0, and within a year or two after graduation they're set to takeover dad's hedgefund (or walk into another nice position dad's friends have kept warm for him). That is the reality. They've had the road to the Ivies smoothed and laid out for them since childhood.

Have you ever wondered how Ivy League athletics work? They're interesting.

Football here is highly regulated. Recruits must come in with academic credentials tied to those of the regular student populace.
To do this, you have a band system, which categorizes recruits every year.

Band 1: These kids have to be close to the average for the student populace. On the new SAT, they'll usually score around 2000 and up. The school average is about 2100-2150, so these guys are pretty much on par with your normal student.

Band 2: This is where most kids in the class end up. Scores here come at around 1800-1900. This is good, though well below the school's average. Most of these kids, by their own admission(they joke about it often enough among themselves) would not have gotten into the school without football.

Band 3: The lowest band. Kids here score from 1600-1700 or so.

Coaches are required to limit Band 3 takes to only about 2-3 recruits per class(out of around 30-35). Band 2 might get around 16-18 guys, and the rest will be in Band 1.

I know who the "low band" recruits were on my team for several of the years before or after me.
Hint: Only one of them was black. None were Hispanic or Asian.
In fact, they were almost uniformly white (just like the team itself).
(for the record, I got a 2100 and walked onto the team after I was admitted).

This type of deal goes for other sports too. In fact, it has been argued that some sports at these elite schools (ex: sailing, equestrian, squash, etc) are mere affirmative action positions for the (almost uniformly white) elite. Nobody else competes in them at a high enough level in prep school to actually go D1 (only the rich can afford them and elite private schools are usually the only ones that offer the activities to begin with), and the only D1 schools that compete seriously in these sports are elite (Ivies, NESCAC, and a couple of others).

So, if you're an upper class white american and you want to guarantee your kid a spot in the Ivies, what do you do? Aside from networking and handing out golden handshakes, you can also put them on a boat from age 10 and get them into competitive sailing at the prep school. Even if their scores are below average, you can bet they'll get in as a recruit.

Not only are there many wealthy, connected, and well-pedigreed white students getting bumped ahead of similarly (or better) qualified Asian-American peers on those factors alone, there are others with lower scores who find their way in by playing sports a) in which these elite universities are among the few serious competitors, b) in which wealthy whites tend to dominate, and c) for which a large number (hundreds) of spots in each incoming class are expressly reserved (20% or more of the incoming classes at elite New England schools like Amherst, Middlebury, Williams, Dartmouth, etc).

Quote:Affirmative action for top universities is mostly a transfer of admissions from Asians to blacks and latinos.

...and whites (particularly those with more affluence and/or legacy, and especially white females).

If one must insist on playing the blame game with regards to this topic, they should take care to at least be accurate about it. To claim that Blacks, Latinos, and Native-Americans are the only beneficiaries of affirmative-action is to perpetuate a myth backed by popular sentiment (which favors the portrayal of Blacks and Latinos as whiny, over-privileged free-loaders who complain too much and receive too much for it) and flat out ignore the statistical and historical reality of the situation. White Americans are getting theirs as well, just as they always have. Blacks and Latinos have no monopoly on admissions based on criteria that are not strictly related to academic qualifications (i.e. test scores), and they never have. Don't get it twisted.
