Chinese Plan World Largest Engineering Project: A Nicaraguan Canal
Not receiving much notice in the US press lately is the beginning of a new canal through Nicaragua. It would dwarf the Panama Canal, and would be able to handle a large volume of shipping.

http://america.aljazeera.com/opinions/20...oject.html

I found this plan interesting because when the original Panama Canal was built, one of the alternate sites considered was Nicaragua.

Will they be able to pull this off? I'm skeptical. Money alone is not enough.

The Chinese are going to find out that this type of a project takes a lot more than that.

The French under De Lesseps found out that building a canal in Panama wasn't as easy as he thought it would be. He was victorious in Egypt with the Suez Canal but was humbled by failure in Panama.

I have to admit that I'm also concerned about seeing the Chinese so prominently in America's backyard.

I hope our intelligence services are watching this little project very, very closely.

We should prevent them from doing it but our nation, unlike China or Russia, is still crippled with retarded guilt over our limited colonialism.

I don't see this getting done unless it meets the demands and benefits of all ( the majority) parties involved.

But if it doesn't get done, I guess the naysayers will be happy with going back to getting raped by their own corrupt Latin American leadership once again.

RE: Chinese Plan World Largest Engineering Project: A Nicaraguan Canal
The project is already being built.
The Chinese need it to transport, among other things, huge amounts of raw materials from Brazil, Venezuela, Bolivia, Uruguay and Argentina, this is, iron core, oil, basic grains (corn, wheat, soja, barley), meat, magnesium, etc. And of course to send back the ships with millions of tons of manufactured cheap Chinese goods, that is, anything from a needle to a car to a plane to a bullet train.
Another canal the Chinese want to build (and Lyndon Larouche is just ectasic about it) is the Kra Canal.
You know, the US (or India under American orders) can shut down the Malacca Straits any day. This is the place where 8 million of oil barrels cross every day in their way to China. So, the Chinese need to look for options.
Anyway, you shouldn't be worried about the Chinese, they are good people, they don't have hostile intentions against America, they just want a deal which can benefit both parties.

With God's help, I'll conquer this terrible affliction.

By way of deception, thou shalt game women.

The destruction of this Chinese project must be considered one of the highest priorities of the nation. The idea that any trade may flow through an American canal not owned or controlled by one of our protectorates is beyond the pale.

The reintroduction of the Monroe Doctrine with the focus on the Orient's unwelcome advances into the Americas is in order. China must be kept from expanding its markets at all costs. Lest they wean themselves from our consumers and find they no longer need us. At which point the sabre rattling will begin.

Time to start learning Mandarin.

I for one fully welcome our Chinese overlords. The Chinese are ruthless and practical. They will run the world like a Swiss watch.

I welcome competition to the Panama Canal. I've heard a few accounts of small private yachts going through and there was corruption in that the local officers asked for bribes as well as from the "agents" who supposedly help with transit. Perhaps this will force Panama to clean up its act.

What Wastelander said about colonialism is very apt.
China is investing in Africa for its natural resources and said investment is helping the people.
Well, every time that is proposed in the West it's neo-colonialism or whatever.

I think the Chinese certainly could do this but may be hobbled by the excessive political and bureaucratic oversight.
That would be my prediction. If it fails it will be due to that.

Yes. The Monroe Doctrine has been long ignored because of our interests in other parts of the world.

Meanwhile influence in our own backyard is being lost. Not only is China building a canal, but Russia and China have been providng lots of military training and funding to Latin American governments who are not fond of America.

As a whole China's foreign policy is truly enviable. While were bogged down in the Mideast and Ukraine, China has virtually recolonized Africa and Latin america is next.

The Canal Authority only accepts cash for vessels going through the Canal, so I can only imagine the corruption that goes down...

Interestingly enough the US was not only thinking of using Nicaragua instead of Panama for a canal, but had it as a hot favorite. Only a well timed earthquake and some shady back room deals kept the Nicaragua Canal from becoming a reality 110+ years ago.

This book was one of the best non-fiction books I ever read about the construction of the Panama Canal and how it was chosen over Nicaragua.

Laugh4

But on a serious side, that project needs to encounter unforseen delays, work stoppages, strikes, and similar problems.
I don't know why the shitheads in Washington are not talking about this. Those dorks are worried about everything under the sun except the things they really should be concerned with.

For some reason I simply can't finish a David McCullough book. Everyone loves him; Im baffled.

The canal is also talked about quite a bit in 'Thedore Rex' by Edmund Morris.

People doubt a country whose history includes the Great Wall of China? One of the biggest and cheapest workforces in existence outside of slavery with a can do attitude as a result of their psyche.

The only problem the Chinese have is the graft that will be involved in these projects. Even long sentences doesn't curb it so I will remain skeptical until an actual shipping lane is in operation. I wouldn't doubt their ability to build such an engineering marvel but managing the whole thing is beyond them in a realistic way.

Dork Central is very much aware of what's going on. I wouldn't be surprised if there is some "regime" change in Nicaragua in the near.

I'm confused. How to the people claiming we should prevent China from building the canal do it? Nuke them? Machine gun the workers? Have CIA plant explosives on the site? Sanction them and ruin our own economy in the process?

If we didnt want them to build it, we should have built it first.

Yes. Or the good old fashioned CIA supported coup that replaces the Nicaraguan government with an administration more favorable the position of the United States.

When it is in your own backyard, you are justified in using some realpoltik every now and again.

Other PRC mega projects that are currently in the works:

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) - That's right it's a combination of sea tunnel, bridges, and artificial islands to link those three places. 2016 completion date.

The Southeast asia highspeed railway network ie. the Kunming-singapore railway. It's supposed to link all SEA nations to Kunming. Work is already being done in some countries. It's hard to say the completion date on this. I don't believe it's an empty pipe dream though even if a couple SEA countries back out.

I don't really trust mainland China especially with the intrusive nonsense going on with the Spratley islands. It's become an irrational flash point for everyone involved. With that being said I don't see a multi-polar world as being a bad thing if the states involved are somewhat cooperative. A world dominated by singular anglosphere interests (and culture) is not good either unless you want to see americentric culture exported further abroad ruining every pussy paradise.
