Fuck cops and their fucking drug war, I am glad that a majority black city finally said enough, and voted for freedom from the government. The less intrusion on personal behavior the better.

The day that the entire country is free of this oppressive drug war is a day for celebration. Fuck the police, BOO HOO we don't have a reason to search you, harass you, confiscate your property, fine you, jail you, and give you endless court dates and state supervision while destroying your life. You mean "politicians and their drug war". That's where cops get there marching orders. Without politicians legislating about it, the cops couldn't even begin to have a "war". People don't like to blame the politicians for the drug war, because in a (relative) democracy, that's way to close to blaming themselves. 5% of the world population, 25% of the world prison population. We're either the most crazed, corrupt, degenerate people in the history of the planet, or we're a nation of douchebags obsessed with micromanaging the OTHER guy's vices by threat of prison rape. Next time you see a new law outlawing ANYTHING, think twice before you vote for it, every one is chipping away at our freedom. Few laws add more freedoms to compensate for the ones they take away.

^^Not at all mr Enigma ( the only Enigma here is......). The majority of home owning people in good areas don't want Pot smokers smoke residue. Or should I say they will NOT once the deed starts regardless of how they voted.

You see, the smell DOES offend many and NYC has a right of habitation law. Maybe in the boondocks or suburbs where most homes aren't attached it will work out.

But in these old buildings that make the majority of structures in NYC or in the attached row homes it will be a big problem, it already is.

All that needs to happen if they were to legalize it is for the neighbors to complain to housing dept and the landlords will be forced to deal with offending party. Problem is there is no way that the landlord can stop the smell so he will be forced to evict the tenant and legally will be able to do so.

So now we will actually have a hippie class of homeless who got evicted for smoking a joint.By landlords who will be forced to do so by the very housing laws of the city! Really sucks for rent stabilized tenants.

*Real example--Have neighbors who is a bunch of Georgians( from the country). Neighbor already complained and super threatened them. If it continues the landlord will throw them out. The cops were unable to catch them in the act but the landlord will be able to throw them out due to the habitation law since their deed is interfering with other tenants right to fresh air!(they do this to cat hoarders also).

Millions of people have been smoking for decades without being evicted from their homes. The only reason it's been an (overblown) "problem" as of late is because people think it's legal so they're now more open about it. It's likely as simple as them leaving a window open or smoking on the balcony.

Can the stronger strains of marijuana be particularly pungent? Sure. But it's not some magic force that ignores walls and doors and will infect the entire neighborhood because someone smoked a joint. Not to mention the dozens of ways there are to lessen or even entirely eliminate the smell.

By the way, if you actually read the article that was linked, it has nothing to do with the thread title or your post.

do you guys realize the police have every economic incentive to have the drug war going on? It's a perpetual justification for more funding, more power, more discretion.

Back in the 70s conservative scholars began shedding groundbreaking work on the self-serving nature of government. Predation and self-enlargement is a hallmark any bureaucracy. The well-managed ones tend to keep it in check. What eludes me is how the law and order conservative types always manage to keep the police-state out of their scathing critiques on government. Cops are state employees - they are part of bureaucracy that has every interest to maintain and expand its raison d'etre. Just as there is always a symbiosis between a regulator and the problem being regulated (i work in finance, trust me), there is a symbiosis between the police and arrestable crimes.

I look at it this way. I am a taxpayer, I lean right economically. I don't fucking want my taxes going to police initiatives that don't make me safer. Every cop they put on this drug war - every time some overzealous high school jock who never made it to college goes around harassing people because he now wears the blue - that's one less guy who can go around preventing murders and robberies. Fewer people smoking weed does not make me safer, but it does make me poorer.
