Depends on the area you grew up in. When DSL/ISDN came out, the phone lines in my area couldnt support it, so I got cable around '98 or '99.
The cable ISP exchanged hands a few times, so access was intermittent.

I remember I had dial up and used to leave my downloads running over night. It took me about 1 week to download Dr. Dre the chronic 2001 back in 1999.

We were influenced by the older big kids that were in high school at that time. They used to go war dialing. I remember them looking at us kids and saying shit like, "What you kids don't war dial?" In 2001 in my 20s, around late July I was on dial-up, and went on a (seemingly) free porn site, closed my browser (so I thought) but left my computer on and passed out.

Apparently, someone from the country of Yemen hacked onto my computer via that site, spammed the piss out of my browser opening over 1000 sites (as I slept), each causing a $1 charge to my Verizon home phone account.

And a few months later 9/11 happened. Where were all the terrorists from? Yemen.

I contest the charge with Verizon for (no shit) 30 HOURS of phone calls, as they gave me the run around for months on dropping the charge. I actually got all the way to the Regional VP of Operations for the NE quadrant of the US.

I explained to him how I've never made an out of country call, he said the records show the # was in existence for 5 weeks, a problem that has occurred before, and quite likely WAS part of a group scamming $ to fund terrorism or international crime.

So he said he'd have the charge dropped for good. It was supposed to "reflect on my billing statement in the next 2-3 billing cycles," which it did, only to reappear 6 months later when Verizon sold the "bad debt" part of their long distance to AT&T.

This is one of the ONLY scars I had on my credit record, that I refused to pay because obviously I don't support terrorism, but I guess Verizon does. Case in point. I also had Norton or McAfee installed that didn't catch it in the first place.
