Posted the ad on some more site, specifiying that I want someone who is respectful, private and quiet during the week, but that I dont mind having friends over or parties during the weekend.

Another French dude applied. He s 28 got a steady job, is an amateur photographer and looks quite old school classy.

First French dude is in Finance. Will also be working an internship, seems to be the cheery type.

I lived with a French dude for 6 months out in Switzerland. He was cool and good with women. Definitely could be a good wingman if he's the outgoing type. I find when you make things clear about sharing food/ cleaning up from the beginning then life becomes much more easier, especially if your particular on your diet/food choices and keeping a clean crib.

You're going to need to meet them or at least talk to them on the phone (maybe Skype). It's really imperative in a roommate that you can get along with their personality and also that you cover all the things that could potentially conflict (things that would bother either of you such as dirty dishes left out, noise, etc...)

I also highly, HIGHLY recommend that you enter into a lease agreement with your landlord that allows you to sublet. This way you can ultimately control who stays in "your" place. Also a good idea to run a credit check on people. People who have shitty credit are generally not that responsible.

You're going to need to meet them or at least talk to them on the phone (maybe Skype). Solid advice. I talked to my landlord about sublet but that means I have to be financially responsible for the entire apartment, which in France requires you to have some sort of "guarantee", similar to credit requirements in USA. Meaning if I want to rent the apartment in my name and then sublease, I need to gain minimum 4k/month in order to meet the credit requirements. In France that's equal to high upper middle class.

I've got some huge problems with a temporary roommate lately. Fucker swore up and down he will be respectful and shit, but he brings people over all the fucking time, throw trash all over the place and leave dishes unwashed for weeks!!!

Is there anything we could do to screen if the roommate will be responsible for the promises he made at the beginning? In France the leasing laws are ridiculous! Once you have signed a contract to rent a room with someone, neither you nor the landlord could kicks him out even if he burns down the house or does not pay rent for half a year. I'm not even half-joking. If you kick him out by force it's illegal. It's illegal for him to stay, but to get him out you have to go through processes that last for years and shit tons of $.

If he's renting from you and especially if you have written house rules into the contract, shouldn't you be able to restrict access to his guests?


Standard stuff:
-Ask for landlord references or roommate references (less reliable), proof of income, credit check
-Ask for a large deposit and write in financial penalties into the sub lease contract, and document everything


The stuff you shouldn't do
-Be a hardass / terrible landlord
-Prank his ass
-Make plausibly deniable verbal threats
-Make friends with the mob
-Plant a kilo of coke in his room

This is the way to go...she can stay for a week while she finds a permanent place. Sets the tone as a guest instead of an equal with obligations from you. She'll be eager to get/keep your goodwill, and that will keep the momentum in your favor.

Use the meet-up to determine whether the potential tenant has their shit together, as this will increase the likelihood that the person is responsible (will pay rent on-time, won't be a PITA to live with).

• Things to be on the lookout for:
• Lateness/tardiness
• Dresses like a slob/has poor hygiene
• Makes excuses/blames others for own shortcomings/fails to follow up on commitments/indecision
• Likes reality TV
  

You may have to use some indirect questioning (shit test, baby ) to suss out the answers to some of these, and there are probably other things to keep an eye out for.

I'd go with the finance dude, get close then pitch myself at his company, IF he has any decent career prospects. Otherwise go with the guy who can pay.

Unless he is in a position of power, there is not much point (and if he was, he wouldn't be looking for a roommate). He is just a cog in the wheel. All he can do is submit a referral resume. Most companies pay employees for referrals, so he'll probably agree to submit one even if he isn't OP's roommate as long as OP doesn't offend him by rejection (for example "i chose another candidate" instead of "old roommate moved back in, sorry")

Sorry didnt update you guys.

I did choose a roommate but none of the above. The finance guy turned out to be a weird creepy dude. And yeah I took the advice and refuse the girl.

Now I got the best roommate ever. A French-Italian guy, purple pill but cool as fuck. He's really into gaming chicks and if I take his word for it he has banged 35 girls at age 22. Game-wise he's just ok, but since he's pretty good looking, cool and assertive in general he has no trouble getting ass.

Everyday we woke up blasting music as morning ritual. For dinner we share beer/cocktails and talk about chicks and stuff. Good life. And we all go out all the time on dates so we have stories to share and keep each other motivated.

This, coupled with my new internship at one big ass research firm where people are purple pill as fuck, just make the transition from student to young professional a hell of a lot easier. My team manager at work just showed me a NSFW pic of a girl he banged last night and he's taking lunch off to see her. I think Im gonna learn new things this summer

I lived with a girl in Lille and it was super depressing, she was german and was cold as shit, had no emotions and just killed my mood and my vibe. She would never interact, she didn't know how to cook and was always eating in her room.
At this time I only brought home like 2 girls in 2014 during my time in Lille.

In 2015 switched to a chill german dude because the girl had to leave for germany, the guy was awesome, super funny, a bit beta but at least we would go out together, listen to music and exchange files, share beers and cook cometimes... it was pretty cool.

Girls can also be quite messy, she was the only leaving dishes int he sink, she broke one of my belgian beer glass, she left hair EVERYWHERE, blocked the shower many times with her hair...it was disgusting I had to unplug the showers a few times and I had to find the pipe cleaner liquid thing for her cause she is awful at french. There were hair all over the place although she never cleaned the floor.

And then she got angry at me because she found a fingernail in the sink and some of my facial hair...

Moral of the story, don't get a roommate that might make your life miserable and is not cooperative

My roommate and I have become best buddies/wing. Things are just perfect and now he just quit his internship. There's a chance he's gonna have to move soon.

Fuck this shit soon as I get a steady job Im getting a studio/1 bedroom. If you gotta have a roommate it better damn well be a good one or not at all.

yeah kinda sucks, he left yesterday. We were really kicking it off. Fucker went and fucked 2 girls before he left lol

I found a new roomie, this one a rather vanilla guy, but seems respectful, so theres that. Plus he leaves every weekend to go see his girlfriend so I ll have more freedom.

Soon as I get a steady job Im grabbing a 2 bedroom with good logistics.
