They're usually in malls and are open 24 hours, meaning they draw in all the waitresses/bartenders and girls that work at the mall.

They're cheap, so they draw in the broke students.

How many 18 to 25 year old girls do you really think want to sign a 2-year gym contract AND pay more per month? They don't give a fuck about free weights or a "lunk alarm", they just want to walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes with their girlfriend.

In unrelated news, I don't understand why other gyms are so fucking expensive. Planet Fitness is chock full of machines, machines are more expensive than free weights and they STILL manage to have a cheaper monthly price, even if you pay for one month. What justification could other gyms possible have for having higher prices AND yearly contracts if they have less machines in total?

I came in this thread about to trash on PF not being a real gym and who gives a fuck what goes on there, but you brought up some really good points. Most gyms absolutely suck, and you pay so much for crap that you would never use. The "something for everybody" is a really shitty business model I think.

When I moved to Vegas I checked out 5 different gyms before picking the one I've got. I went with Anytime Fitness. $30 per month, no contract, and it's something like $300 per year if you buy in bulk. I can't speak for the other locations so I don't know what Anytime Fitness is like as a chain; it's franchised so each location might be slightly different. The one I go to is small compared to big gyms and in a quiet little strip mall in Summerlin, but tons of space considering I've never seen more than 10 people in there at one time. I went yesterday and there were 2 other people in the entire gym. There's an attached crossfit area where members can pay a premium for classes, but I can go in there anytime there's not a class and do compound lifts to my hearts content; tons of barbells, tons of free weights, everyone is respectful and puts their equipment back and wipes down benches, it's a dream. There's tons of equipment, very few people, and it's simply a joy to workout there. I have a feeling though, that this location is an anomaly.

Yeah maybe my location is an anomaly or something. I only pay $35 a month no contract for 24 hours a day at my gym and it's huge. Planet Fitness's strategy may be smart because it panders to the fat, the cheap, and the stupid. But that doesn't mean it should be lauded.

The only time I was in a Planet Fitness I was not impressed by the talent. Given the choice I'd prefer to workout at any crossfit box, bodybuilder gym, or the commercial gym near my house. None of which have ever required a contract from me and all of which were full of smoking hot fitness chicks. This is however motivation for me to get my fat lazy ass back in the gym.

I've been to enough gyms to know that the Planet Fitness business model is here to stay. It is very good at what it does by incorporating the masses and keeps them there.

The fee for staying on is so low that people don't even bother to cancel it. That is free money right there.

The equipment is cheap and easily replaced or sold on. The equipment is the #1 expense. Go to your local big gym that has a swimming pool and see how much the contracts are. They need you to stay locked in to pay for the swimming pool and other costly items such as maintenance, cleaning and heating. This doesn't even consider the inclusion of sunbeds, saunas and any other fancy gym items you'd expect.

A pool is not cheap.

Location matters. PF can offset the expensive mall and high street location prices with the sheer number of people going through its doors and paying.

If it is out the way then they are taking advantage of different land rates. A gym in the middle of town is going to be a lot more than the one outside of it.

Bodybuilding gyms are cheap because they're in these locations but not as cheap as PF because the client base are more demanding and the owner wants a profit and cannot utilise a larger customer base than PF.

Further to my point about cheaper gyms. A market for no-thrills gyms is on the rise, I go to one where I live and it has everything I need. Granted it could do with some more items I am happy with it.

- No swimming pool
- No sauna, sunbed
- No massive heating bills
- Inside a former government building
- Pre-owned equipment
- Nowhere near centre of town
- No cancel fee, monthly payment which can be stopped and then resumed

All of this results in cheap running cost but gives the gym a profit as well.

I went to a PF for awhile, I agree with those who have said the no-contract, low price model is good.

They are better than Bally's and other long-contract gyms in that way. Other than that I have used municipal gyms for $35 a year and the Y.

PF's "no judgment zone" is bullshit though. In the one I was in, grunting while lifting was "banned" and they had some "lunkhead alarm" which you could press if you were offended by grunting. Isn't that "judgment?" Ridiculous.

I have a PF membership just for that reason. I do Weights at my regular gym in the AM and cardio and PF at night...of the last 50 chicks i have fucked about 12 i meet at PF.

The PF uptown on Dyckman in Washington heights,NYC is filled with young Dominicans and Colombians. You Go to that bitch during the day when the bartenders and strippers go the first thing you say to yourself is " ok this is where all the hoes go in the daytime"

It's fairly easy to vote in favour of victim classes when you represent 50% of the population and are the obvious go to victim.

It's very difficult to handle how much it hurts your feeeeeeeelllllinnnnggsss when the non-gender, non-group specific pro-victim voting you've done is then applied logically to other victim classes.

Why do guys complain about people being fat and then try to keep them from going to the gym?

I'm not "lauding" PF, I don't even like them, I'm just pointing out the inaccuracies in people's opinion of them, and the fact that most gyms are too stupid or elitist to make their business model more consumer friendly.

Not everyone goes to the gym to become a powerlifter or bodybuilder. For a woman or a fat ass just trying to get in (better) shape, PF provides everything they need.

A smith machine is not ideal for building functional strength when compared to free weights, but it's just fine for getting in shape, burning fat, and developing muscle.
