I'm hoping to get my bareback cert this summer and wanted to connect with other guys who know how to handle a sailboat under 32 feet.

Any sailors on here?

I've done a bit of sailing when I was a kid and skippered an 11m cat around the Whitsunday Islands. But sailing is something I do so irregularly that I wouldn't consider myself a sailor.

Besides learning how to tie knots sailing isn't too hard to get basic competency. Getting good at it is another story but it shouldn't take you too long to learn all you need to know to take a boat out in mild weather.

I sail - mainly in the 25-33ft range. Grown up sailing, but since I've not had my own boat I haven't done as much helming as I'd like. Bought a 25ft day racer just before Christmas - hoping to get some hours in from April onwards.

Which Ocean do you want to cross? When you can do it you will not be looking here for answers.

Go sail and learn it's not something you can shortcut online except..

Go rent or buy a Hobie cat preferably an 18 but a 16 will work and learn how to with the sails in a right the fuck now scenario.

Watch "laser" sailing full jib little boats

Once you understand sailboats at a even sunfish level it will apply to the bigger boats.

Now. When shit goes wrong. That is what we need a new thread about here.

I read somewhere that you can apprentice under some skippers in the Caribbean and learn the ropes that way. Plus you will be in the tropics, with that hopefully a few stops in some hip beaches with hot women. My advice, apprentice and go from there.

I have been sailing for the past few summers and I really love it. I'm finishing off the RYA Day Skipper course. This will probably be my MGTOW lifetime hobby.

This is a good article about how skippers needing crew match up for anything from races; short cruises to ocean crossings.

No, never done any ocean crossing, unless crossing the channel counts. I was scheduled to do the Arc race a few years ago, but the boat I was supposed to be doing it on (Oyster 82) didn't end up going and I wasn't able to find an alternative berth in time.

It's on my 'to do' list, although I'd quite like to do it on my own boat (a bigger one than the one I currently have), and would rather go the other way round the world, perhaps follow Vasco de Gama's route and navigate only using the Leo Belgicus and the stars.

For now my sailing goals are to helm my boat through a summer of day racing here on the south coast of the UK, be a competitive helm in Cowes Week, which I've crewed in every year for the last 12 years, and to hitch it to my car and drive to Scotland so I can spend a few weeks sailing around the west coast.

Solid advice, although I think it is easier to transfer skills and be competitive on cats if you've learned on something like a Laser Pico or even a topper. You could give yourself quite a fright if you just hopped on a Hobie cat 18 by yourself for your first time sailing. I actually very nearly bought a Hobie 21, for the thrills, but thought I'd learn more on a single hull. I do plan to trade in my current boat in for something a bit livelier, or bigger, after Summer.

I've all ready got my keelboat cert.
After I get bareboat, I'm looking into buying a cheap bluewater cruiser around 27-30 feet and doing the Caribbean from Florida to Trinidad. Hopefully early next year for 3-5 months. The Caribbean is a great place for beginners to sail (outside hurricane season, of course). Steady winds and short distances. The whole project is still up in the air and depends of my circumstances, but if anybody is interested, get in touch.

That's a fairly lengthy sail. Weather conditions can change rapidly, small oversights can lead to big problems.
I wouldn't recommend that long of a trip until you get more experience or unless you have a more experienced sailor come with you.
Ideally you want to spend several months or more learning how to sail your boat, gradually increasing distances, and testing yourself in a variety of weather conditions.
It's not like a road trip where you can always rely on someone else to basically save your ass if you don't know what you're doing.
It seems like a cool and fun idea though, so I'm not saying don't do it. I'm just saying don't underestimate the safety risks, and do as much as you can to properly prepare yourself.

I'm not very experienced but I have taken a few sailing classes and been out a few times. I actually bought a small 12" arch davis hand built wood sail boat, nothign huge its basically a small rowboat with a sprit sail. Its fun to take out on some local lakes and have a few beers but hardly a true sailboat.
