Soylent - Powdered Food Replacement. Anyone Tried?
http://www.soylent.me/#/

Soylent is a powder that is supposed to be a complete replacement for food. It has fats, carbohydrates, proteins, and a full range of vitamins and minerals.

I first read about this maybe 3 years ago as the author of a blog had constructed this himself at home, buying large quantities of powdered vitamins and such and mixing them together. He offered to send it to people for free who wanted to test it out, and I was curious but demand was overwhelming so he quickly ran out.

It's startling but the idea is that you 100% stop eating food and just rely on this powder.

I don't think I would ever stop eating food but the idea of having this as a meal replacement when on-the-go instead of eating some garbage seems like a huge benefit.

Curious if anyone has actually tried this. Basically taking the protein shake to its logical extreme.

RE: Soylent - Powdered Food Replacement. Anyone Tried?
I read about this last year. I'm very interested in using it to supplement my diet.
This guy relied only on Soylent for a month.

In the end, he missed normal food but he could see himself using it as a quick breakfast or lunch replacement in a pinch.

I watched that guy's video. Eating nothing but Soylent, as he did, seems crazy. He talked about the isolation of not being able to eat or drink with friends, his jaw muscles not being used, staying inside, feeling depressed.

Obviously that's not the point for me, and I imagine most people here. I'd like this probably as a late-night easy fill-me-up snack, or maybe midday while working. Not as a meal replacement.

Not sure why you would want to trust some dude's dubious meal replacement powder instead of making your own. His carbohydrate source is just simple maltodextrin aka simple sugar which you can buy from just about any fitness supplement store for cheap and in bulk. Dunno what his protein source is but it can't be better than whey and regarding his fat source, well, VERY skeptical about him being able to provide high quality sources.

I mean if it's the easy to drink no hassle liquid meal thing that you're after, just prepare a peanut butter+greek yoghurt+whey powder+ananas[or any other fruit] concotion in a blender that you can take with you. Boom, there's your Soylent right that with all-natural quality for cheap.

tl;dr it sounds like a really cooky idea some nerd had when he watched to many sci-fis. Also just look at him, he's not exactly the very definition of what Health looks like

Sounds like a cool idea but I'd probably throw some psyllium husk, whey powder, and grassfed heavy cream (if such a thing exists) in there for shits and giggles.

I'm thinking of something I could quickly prepare at work. Just pour powder into a bottle, shake, and drink. Don't exactly have a blender at work.

I know a powerlifter who makes his own and dude is pretty strong. I believe corn masa (used in tortillas) was the carbohydrate source.

Personally I prefer to enjoy real food.

If only you knew how bad things really are.

That's nothing really.
I spend about $150 per week on food alone.
Also there a lot of people who spend much more than that at the club on the weekend.

My BS alarm goes off whenever I hear "food replacement".

Even if it has "everything you need", it will never have the right amount of everything you need. Kinda like how a multivitamin has too low doses of certain vitamins to be useful.

It might have its use in extreme cases - soldiers, explorers, astronauts - but not for everyone.

Actually you are incorrect in that statement.

The two links i posted earlier state that "soylent" has a full day's recommended vitamins, minerals. The creator wanted to make sure you could still remain healthy and not die due to malnutrition.

RDIs are not useful to people who want to be strong, fit and healthy at our level. They're for the general public who only need to be fit enough to walk from the car to the work building.

See various threads on this very forum about zinc and vitamin D supplements for example. Same with Vit Bx, Vit C, protein intakes etc.

Sure you will survive ok in a pinch, like the extreme situations I listed above, but why would you do that if you want to get ahead in a normal life?

I drink this stuff off amazon, it's pretty similar.

Raw meal - taste is god awful but has tons of nutrients and a great protein to calorie ratio. Soy and Dairy free.

Yes I tried supplementing my diet substantially with shakes (protein powder + milk + fruits & veggies) last year. It appealed to the cheap lazy nerd bachelor in me. However it was not a good experience. I think people are just meant to chew on solid food. This is especially the case when you're dieting. If you've committed to low level hunger pangs to reach your fitness goals then you had better have something tasty to rip into and swallow to help you deal. Hunger + Meh Liquid Shakes = No mental and physical satiation and thus a ticket to binging and overeating.

Another reason to stick with hard foods is that it exercises the jaw. If you go full on shakes then who knows, you may end up in slack-jawed territory.

Bumping this.

I've been eating soylent as a large part of my diet for three months now. I feel healthier than I did before I started. My blood pressure is fine and my blood sugar is normal.

Because of all the time I save, I get to work sooner and have more free time. I go out to eat all the time.

By my calculations, I save about ten hours a week.

If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.

^ Can you expand on that? I assume you replace one or two of your meals with soylent and live life as normal besides that. Is that right?

As the guy in the video lost five pounds in two weeks, this product should be made compulsory for hambeasts and feminists.

Checkmat,

I only swap out meals I would eat alone. Still grill out and make steaks with friends about once a week. I try to have lunch with someone every day. But that is at most one meal a day. Most people I know have no idea and they won't find out unless I tell them.

For example I'll have some for breakfast instead of making eggs.

I wouldn't mind trying this out during a bulking cycle. It's hard getting all the carbs I need from sources like white rice (about 9 cups a day cooked). Takes for-fucking-ever to eat.

RE: Soylent - Powdered Food Replacement. Anyone Tried?
I was searching for something a bit more pre-made than Soylent and I stumbled upon a product called MealSquares. They have a decent fat/carb/protein split with a basic blend of vitamins and nutrients all for $3 per square ($90 for 30 + free shipping). I think I am going to try out a sample pack.

Good ingredient list as well, no bullshit soy or anything:

Eggs, orange juice, whole grain oats, milk, dark chocolate chips (chocolate, sugar, cocoa butter, milkfat), whey, rice bran, sunflower seeds, dates, vegetable glycerin, chickpeas, carrots, coconut oil, tapioca starch, xylitol, iodized sea salt, potassium citrate, cinnamon, baking powder, Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), Vitamin D3, Vitamin K2, lactase

These will never replace my steak and eggs, but they could be the perfect travel replacement meal.

Designate , have you tried that diet? A few smart people have suggested it to me, but I know nobody who can vouch for it.
