Books that tell us about society and why it has ended like it has
Hello everyone. I have recently been reading a lot of philosophy and the philosophical views of Sartre, Nietzsche, Locke etc. I have been reading on what some would call 'classical' philosophers. I recognise a lot of what they describe in their theories in the society today ( mostly Western but some patterns could be applied to the entire globe at the moment) and in the way people act and think. As a side note, it is funny how... well... primitive it all seems when you read it and recognise it. I always had this idea that we as the human being specie was a complicated, often insane and difficult to understand specie but it seems that when people move in groups and in societies, everything becomes so tedious and similar. Very few stand out so to say.

Anyways, what I am searching for now is litterature ( fiction or not... Does not matter) on power. Economical power, political power, cultural power, intelligence power, art power, seductive powers religious power. All sorts of power. I was thinking; What other best way to learn about power than to read from the most powerful? The likes of Churchill, Sarkozy, Dalai Lama, Prophet Muhammed, Alexander the Great, Casanova, Hitler, Elvis Presley, Bob Marley etc. In essense, I want to learn more about what kind of powers constitute and control our modern day socities and make them look like they do.

However, it does not exclusively have to be those great personalities in history. This is why I am writing here: Maybe some of you know some good books out there? Books that surprised, shocked and astonished you. Something interesting. Both fiction and non-fiction just as long as it can relate to our modern day society and evolution. Let me hear some suggestions!

On Power by Bertrand de Jouvenel

Full disclosure -- I have only read select quotes from the book. They titillated me enough to buy it and I have it on my immediate to-read list but haven't yet.

Interesting choice. I have looked up the index of the book and it looks very good. The disclosure of power seems rather in-depth which is positive. I will read parts of it and come back with a feedback. Thanks for the recommendation.

Keep em coming!

The Creature from Jekyll Island by G Edward Griffin. Explains in detail the roots of the global banking system and how its working to enslave humanity.

God, Family, Country. The three things in life worth fighting for. Except for God; all are dead. Now it's just me, the road and God. Don't know where it will lead, but for right now...
May there always be a road!

Escape From Freedom by Erich Fromm. One of the best non-fiction books I've ever read.

Essentially: “If humanity cannot live with the dangers and responsibilities inherent in freedom, it will probably turn to authoritarianism.”

In that order.

If you are going to impose your will on the world, you must have control over what you believe.
