I've never been to Manila, but I asked someone about it. In Bangkok there is accommodation for every price range. $100 a month up to as much as you want to spend. Right now I live in a 40ish square meter one bedroom condo with washing machine, soft and really nice queen sized bed, flat screen tv, etc. for $450 per month. You can get a similar place for $350 per month in a studio version of about 30 square meters.

I was told the reason this type of thing doesn't exist so much in Manila is because there isn't the same size middle class there as in BKK. Bangkok has a very large, and growing, middle class. So these mid range priced condos are in high demand. But I was told in Manila the middle class is still very small in comparison, so you have cheap accommodation for the poor people, and expensive accommodation for the upper class.

Anyone know if there's much truth to that?

I'd say he's mostly wrong from my experience living here.

My place is in one of the best neighborhoods in the city. I have an unobstructed view of the Makati skyline in a 61sqm loft, 15ft ceilings, brand new bed, flat screen, etc. for $775 a month. Bills bring it to $1000. But this place would be 3x as much in a major USA coastal city.

You can get places in the Fort/Makati/Ortigas/etc for around $450-$900 that sound like what you have or even bigger. It's a bit more than BKK for sure, maybe 20-25%?

For example, I looked at a 1br, 40sq, washer, nice bed, corner unit, for $550 near my place now.

It does have a smaller middle class at the moment, but it is growing rapidly here. It's growing faster than BKKs in fact. This place is exploding right now, hence the price hikes.

Also, many middle class families live in homes, not condos, in places like Paranaque or QC.

But there are more and more condos here. And you can get yearly leases for decent to very nice places from $450 to $900 a month.

This topic "How much does it cost to live in Thailand" always results in heated discussions. The problem is that everyone wants a hard number when in reality it would more accurate to say that price varies greatly. Could you live in Thailand on $800/month with a decent apartment or house and still have enough money to go out a couple of times a week and game women? Of course you could - millions of Thai guys live on that amount (even less) and these guys usually own a financed vehicle with monthly payments to worry about. On the other hand there are millions of single Thai guys who need more than $5000, often much more. The prices here mirror income, net worth and status like no other place I have ever seen. A friend of mine was grumbling the other day about the price of the Gym he works out at in Chiang Mai. Of course Touch Gym is expensive, I told him. Why do you think the treadmills face out into the mall (Maya)? The idea is that members want everyone to see that they can afford to work out there. When I used to live in Bangkok my gf, who had a very good salary but didn't come from a wealthy family, preferred to hang out in Thonglor, which was ok because I like it there too. Many of her friends also liked to hang out in Thonglor, but a few had average salaries (for a university grad) and were always borrowing money from her and she used to complain about this constantly. My point is that how much you need to live in Thailand has a lot to do with your social circle. I'm Canadian and for us it's no big deal to have a mixed group of friends with different backgrounds, but here it's different. So if you start gaming so called 'hi-so' girls be prepared to spend a lot of time at expensive restaurants, clubs and events.

For me the minimum to live how I'd like to live is about $3,000 a month including in 3rd world countries. Although I find $4,500+ the sweet spot where I live really well.

$3,000 a month in the US would be alright if you simply had rent as basically your only big outlay. But what about when you like many 20 somethings have student loans, drive to work etc. That $3,000 a month quickly evaporates.

I do a lot of online game as well, especially when I'm traveling on business and don't have time to walk around malls all day.

The conversion rates are quite high for me if I get them on Skype (which IIRC is his online game tip), especially in Latin America and in Asia. I can see where he gets that 10/10 number, simply because there isn't an easier place really.

I just came back from BKK, and from a visitors perspective I wouldn't want to spend less than $2k/month, and I barely drink.

I think you need to spend at least $750 on a decent condo to show to the girls that you aren't there for the Nana bargirls. Other than that everything is cheap, so I guess you could do it for $1500, but not $1000 unless you're in some shithole apartment.

Manila never has been a cheap place - between 2008-2012 I lived in BKK and frequently visited MNL - I felt MNL at that time was slightly more expensive than BKK. Regarding accomodation you are 100% correct: far less options than BKK resulting in higher prices. As BKK prices have dramatically increased past 3 yrs it's probably now bit more expensive than MNL.

I would not want to live in either BKK or MNL on less than 2k ( normal expat lifestyle) or 3k ( longterm party tourist). However the real fun in both places starts around 5k.

Apart from the weather the lays are more difficult than in SEA - women in their prime between 18-25 sometimes don't even want to be seen in public, if you are older looking - as she knows that everyone would recognize it for sugar-daddy-dom.

No one is "paying through the nose" in Manila, and it's never been popular with the location independent crowd anyways.

Numbeo is not accurate, that's why no one here uses it as a reference. For instance, it also claims BKK is more expensive than Manila.

And I'm not disagreeing that Ukraine is a good budget destination, but I also don't think you're going to see some mass migration from Bangkok to Kiev because a head of lettuce is 50 cent cheaper.

When I was in BKK I paid $50/night for a Thong Lor apartment with penthouse gym, pool, doorman, AC etc. Rio told me in person I could still have negotiated that rate by a sizeable percentage.

That's what it is though, it's a quick guide and Manila is one of the most expensive cities in all of SEA. I said it was 800$ (as a budget traveler) on average for SEA. I traveled tiny cities, second and third tier cities and capitals. 800$ is general because it's a small newsletter and I'm not going to go into detail city by city. That being said, while I was in Quezon City I noticed that you could find really cheap apartments. But if you only want to stay in the nicest area of the nicest city in the country, it will definitely be over 800$

I have no time to argue endlessly but what do you mean by West? I guess West Europe is west, right? otherwise you should have written USA (or whatever you meant by "West").

If west Europe is West I can say without a shadow of a doubt that my city (Milan) has far more gorgeous girls than 95% of EE cities. Models are just EVERYWHERE. Guess what - I live in EE for years now - moved here 4 years ago. Erasmus students are not a good example of the costs necessary. Average decent wage in EE is roughly 800$. 1200$ lets you buy even property - this is long-term lifestyle. If you want to have dinner every day at a restaurant, then yes it will not be enough. But on that note, 4000$ in most Western cities won't cut it, because you will spend 3000$ on restaurants alone.

So decent is a matter of the beholder.

Milan and NYC or even LA are not cities which display the fatocalypse happening in the USA, UK and most of Western Europe. Italy is generally much better - young girls are much slimmer - Austria and Germany is not so good though and Denmark - well, times have been much better.

Fucking special low-tier Erasmus sluts is not a good sign of EE, because those are specific kind of 5s and 6s who deal with that.

The primary difference that I see in cost between Manila, Bangkok, and let's say Jakarta are the options.

Bangkok simply has way more options than either of those two cities. You can find OK accommodation in the $500 range (Lumpini, Grand or any of the middle class developments fit the bill.)

At the higher end $700-$1000 (Address, sansiri, etc..) the number of units for rent jumps way up because a lot upper class Bangkok individuals bought a lot of those units and just let them sit. There's a bit of a glut of leasable units. Plus it's beyond the salary range for most middle class Thais for long term leasing. This means loc. independent expats like some of us get way more options in Bangkok than any other city.

In Manila the decent condo developments are limited to a few well known areas but that's changing now. I see way more options on airbnb now and it seems that more and more OFW Filipinos who buy condos are getting in on this action. The unfortunate side effect is that a lot of realty services are trying to ply their trade and these guys tend to be much shadier than private owners.

When it comes to general living costs I do think Bangkok is cheaper overall though. There are so many options to eat very well in Bangkok. Plus transportation is so simple because everything is central to the skytrain/MRT or a short taxi ride away from one of the lines.

"The West" should be renamed The Anglosphere. There are plenty of tasty girls in continental western Europe, which is probably Gosh900's perspective on this. Quality in France, Germany and Italy all beats the UK in my experience, though those are harder places to SNL.

I meant The Anglosphere. Over 95% of the people that visit Swooptheworld are from USA or UK, so I wasn't thinking about it too much. If I was talking about those other countries that number would definitely be different.

Looks are so subjective I know for a fact I personally am bias towards EE which the average looking tall model-like chick would go further in my books than a gorgeous short asian chick. Yeah, I don't have an overall preference personally. To me, SEA girls are almost always thin. They have more of a similar look and I feel like I don't see as many ugly girls walking around ie really big nose, manly features and things like that. However, I don't see near as many stunners in SEA as I did in LA and EE.
