Yeah, I'm not one who is down with this life either. Give me German cars, Asian women, and American dollars.

I guess camping can be fun though. Smile

Something about it feels fake. Maybe a plug for a reality show.

The way he holds rifle in left hand.
Fires shotguns in right hand.
Very cheap knife on hip. Not one for daily survival.
They way he tore apart that catfish.
His eyes when explaining the 'mother smother' story.

The only people I know that would live on the Alabama river banks, getting chewed up by mosquitos are meth heads and/or homeless people. Most of the camping I've ever done is in the spring/fall/winter. The middle of summer is unbearable out there without occasional relief (think A/C-shower).

Most of the time people's idea of "unplugging from the manufactured world" is to merely relocate to a less populated area, continuing to get the goodies like all sorts of material stuff and medicines that are from the manufactured world, and also while relying on the perfect and historically atypical security bubble provided by modern nation states of the manufactured world. A benefit that a lot of people skip over, but is very expensive to maintain and so so beneficial, since it's pretty nice when marauding bands of invaders and warlords don't slaughter you. So yeah, no one really unplugs completely, because it would really really suck. I suppose you would have to parachute naked into the Brazilian Amazon or tribal hinterlands of Pakistan, and then burn your parachute and start over at square one like our very earliest ancestors. You would be cold, hungry, and dead very soon though.
So, yeah the manufactured world does a lot more than just enslave men. In fact, its easier now than at any time in history for a male of non royal lineage to make the manufactured world his bitch, and use this invention of "money" to get whatever resources he may need in the location of his choosing.

The thrill of busting a nut in or on a hot 19 year old is as short-lived as they come.

The prospect of unplugging from the manufactured world that has enslaved men provides a much more palpitating thrill.

"Unplug" from this "manufactured" world that has "enslaved" you and perhaps the relevance of the scare quotes I've used will become very clear to you, very fast.

Don't understand this statement...what scare quotes?

Anyway I'm assuming you're trying to get me to eat my words or something. I did a survival camp thing up north years ago. I know that true survivalism isn't easy.

There's a reason I'm not living in a cabin by a lake in the middle of nowhere. That doesn't mean I don't fantasize about it. I've experienced the best that a city has to offer and what gave me thrills 10 years ago doesn't thrill me now. I'm quite sure I'm not the only one that feels this way.

I also agree with Ali. Pretty sure this kid is making regular trips to a local general store for batteries and whatnot, he's not exactly a shining example of living off the grid, but still, he's much more removed from society than the vast majority, and good for him. That was about the stupidest way to butcher a catfish I've ever seen. Any amateur fisherman would have done a 100x better job.

Him gutting that fish then hacking it into pieces like that caught my eye too, beginning at the 4:30 mark, I've never seen anyone clean a fish like that before and I've been around a lot of fish in my life.

God damned them all, I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold, we'd fire no guns-shed no tears, now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier, the last of Barrett's privateers!

It all depends on what your tolerance and ambitions are like.

I know 2 guys that I would consider unplugged. One of them spends weeks at a time living in the chapparal backcountry in the Sespe wilderness. He's on a firefighting reserve that handles brush fires. The other one moved to Alaska and became a teacher in a small Inuit village. Clearly they both use a car, they both are exposed to electricity, etc. But by and large, they're blissfully ignorant of fashion trends, smartphones, paying rent, working a 9-5, eating microwaved meals, etc. Neither one of them can tolerate traffic or crowds of people. Neither of them would enjoy sitting in bustling, loud cafe at lunchtime and having a waitress bring them food. They'd be more comfortable eating jerky and sitting on a rock under a huge open sky and no power lines around.

In a way, they're on the opposite side of the same coin that you're talking about. Whether you're running an online biz somewhere in SEA or you're like one of the guys I described, what we're really talking about here is flying under the radar and living an unconventional life. Whatever your aspirations are, that's up to you.

I agree that in the post hunter-gatherer era, it's currently as good as it gets. The fact that I can turn on a faucet for hot water is a historical anomaly. I'm well aware of that. That doesn't diminish the call of the wild.

Here's how to skin a fillet a catfish. I learned and was proficient in 5 fish. Very simple process and the most efficient for extracting meat. That kid left about half of his for the raccoon's.

Not being able to learn basic survival skills is killing the masculinity in America. Very few people in Western Culture even know how to eat a fish with bones anymore. Most kids, if given the opportunity, would prefer to stay out in the woods for the weekend instead of sitting on the couch play xbox and watching tv. Unfortunately, they never have a father to do it. And there is the problem.

RE: Young guy lives alone in the woods for two years
There were lots of houses around that lake in Alabama, he had two different shotguns, what looked like a 22 rifle in the beginning, and must have had a centerfire rifle to ignite that tannerite. Like Ali said, seems a bit fake.
The video of the guy in Alaska breaking the moose bone is even worse. Digs a huge amount of snow out to get to hard ice, then gets 3 big ass rocks from "somewhere" when there is deep snow everywhere, just to bust a bone. Massive waste of energy. Use your axe, a hammer, or a stone if you have one stashed above the snow. These guys in the reality shows are some of the biggest attention whores alive. Everything is scripted and a joke. Everybody is about to die of starvation if they don't catch a fish. Some of the shows in Alaska are filmed within a few miles of a wallmart, and almost all right near some sort of store.[/align]
You can bet that a guy teaching school in an inuit village has internet, a microwave, and pays ridiculously high rent unless the school district sets him up.

Why would anyone get excited over a video about some chick jerking off in a library when they can log onto pornhub and whack off to infinitely better clips?

I live in Alabama, not too far from this kid. That part of the Coosa river is around Weiss Lake. I'm gonna say it's fake. All the guys I know that live in the woods are ROUGH...way more haggard than him. When they were this kid's age they were in jail frequently, and only after they couldn't settle back into society would start living in the woods.

He's pretty much like most of the guys his age from Centre or Gadsden.

When I was 20 I took a year off and hiked down the Pacific Crest trail. OK, I didn't hunt, I bought food for the backpack. But for those of us who aren't quite into the hunting, a long backpacking trip is one of the great adventures that can form you from a boy into a man.

Or, take an old car and vagabond across the US/Canada. Or go work on a fishing boat in Alaska.

Every young male should go on a quest, or several. It's not to be missed.

Interesting side note here. This probably deserves its own thread, but I'll drop it here. Looks like the media is now trying to cheerlead for women hunters:

http://projects.aljazeera.com/2015/02/women-hunting/

After years of criticizing hunting as "cruel" and "inhuman", hunting is now cool, hip, and trendy, since it has the female seal of approval.

1. It's Al-Jazeera.
2. None of the girls are cute and they're doing it partly for food.

Trophy hunters are pretty much shit on by the media. The cute girls that have taken pictures next to dead lions and other stuff some man (likely daddy or a rich husband) paid for them to shoot have tons of hate heaped on them.

Careful some states do not allow wilderness camping with this as a possible result:

Did anybody else notice that Harmony Korine made this? I'm wondering if it is real or not myself. The dialog, fucked up childhood, etc. Reminds me of Gummo and Julien donkey boy.

RE: Young guy lives alone in the woods for two years
I think where you fall on this will obviously depend a lot on your background, how you were raised, and where you were brought up. As someone who is a country boy through and through, this kind of living holds tremendous appeal to me.

I was raised around people who always had more stuff (latest tech, trendy clothes etc) than me, and I was acutely aware of that fact. Because it was never an option to me (and I was never allowed to play computer games as a child), and I was always thrown out of the house first thing in the morning with some sandwiches and water, and my pocket knife, and essentially told not to reappear until dinner, I have a great affinity for the outdoors. I am comfortable in it, and learned how to stay dry, how to butcher various animals, how to make fire without matches, all that good stuff.

What many people perhaps don't realise is that there is a mental and corporeal malaise that infects us all when we are sat at our desks, doing our 9-5s (I do it too). Your mind and body in nature are far freer, and more in tune with your surroundings. I have absolutely no doubt that in my feral youth, certainly once I hit my early teens,I could have survived alone in the woods indefinitely, and been extremely happy.

I think when we are all consumed with the trivia of our day to day lives, worried about bills and issues at work, we forget what it is like to have time and space and freedom, that allows us just to sit and think. I think we are all much poorer (even if fiscally better off) as a result. For me personally, it is a poor trade.

Its never been people that have gotten me sick in the woods its been intestinal parasites because a beaver or a duck shit in creek I was drawing water from. Other's I've worked with have contracted Lyme's disease from Ticks or blastomycosis from woodland fungal colonies http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/kenora-cot...-1.537971.
