There are probably quite a few oilfield cats on here who will be laying low this summer with some cheap travel in mind. I know I will be.

Lets get a thread going to see what different guys are up to and get some ideas going.

I am thinking of hitting up Eastern Europe myself from April to July. I am trying to pick one (or maybe two cities) that are suitable for:
- Good day game opportunities
- A budget of 1,500k - 2,000 USD a month
- Have adequate gym and boxing facilities
- Will be reasonably okay with only speaking English
- Quick runs to other nearby cities and Countries for adventure


So far I am leaning towards Sourcecodes Budapest Info and Natural Nomads Belgrade Datasheet.

Any other guys on here with $40 oil travel plans?

If this is what you want to do I'd check out the muay thai camps in Thailand.

I would suggest Seville for April/May. The Feria de Abril is April 21st-26th this year and that's a pretty crazy party.
Also Seville is just a beautiful city and in Spring it is at its best.
There are tons of university students so English is around...but it would be worth your time to study up on some Spanish beforehand.
Costs are low, and well within your budget. Good transportation to explore the rest of Andalucia and make side trips to Portugal, Madrid, etc.
It starts to get hot in June...but at that point you could spend a few weeks traveling around Spain which you will probably love at that point...then maybe spend July in Croatia or island hopping in Greece. If you are still in Spain in early July go to San Fermines...just don't stay up all night drinking if you are going to run with the bulls, almost all the idiots who get fucked up are drunk foreigners who don't know how to do it right.

Ya that's a solid plan VolandoVengoVolandoVoy. My buddy who is here right now did something similar two years ago and was recommending it as well. He had a great time. I am off to Colombia next week so I will start working on the Spanish either way.

The main strictly Eastern European martial art you can find is Sambo. It's very much like judo and grapple based if that's your thing and you want to learn and practice against something out of the ordinary.

Hwuzhere, have you ever trained Sambo in EE?

My understanding is that it's similar to wrestling in the US, in that there isn't many hobbiest clubs around. It's for serious competitors and if you're not one you can't really show up and train. It isn't taught like Judo is in the US or Karate.

I've never been, but that's what I've read, so curious to know how true that is.

Atlantic, there is Legacy gym in Boracay also. Mma and Muay Thai.
For Thailand, I'd pick Phuket Top Team over Tiger from what I've been told. But know that where those gyms are located is remote and there are no girls around, just tons and tons of foreign fighters. So unless training is your main focus, I'd pick sonewhere else.

Maybe somewhere in Mexico? I've always been curious if there are some medium sized beach towns with good boxing gyms? Seems like that'd be an awesome place to relax.

My grandfather has and he drilled the basics into me as a kid. It was originally an off shoot of judo that incorporated various other martial arts including wrestling. The foundation lies in Judo but yes you are correct it incorporates more wrestling, but with less of an emphasis on your strength(making it more similar to the aforementioned judo). I am not exactly fluent in Russian sadly and I spent more time with family when I was last visiting to look around and try to learn more 3 years ago so my knowledge on the subject is sub par. I always assumed there was some form of gym or area where you could learn. Still might be a good idea to look around or even walk in and try to spar with MMA rules.
TL;DR learned basics as a kid and couldn't pursue it when I was visiting family a couple years back.
Edit: Completely misread your post and thought you were comparing the style of fighting to wrestling. From what I do remember though is that it's a serious sport and I would imagine it's more for people taking it very seriously. All the same would check it out. Sorry about that been drinking a little tonight.

Was talking to an old timer yesterday about EE in the 90's. He told me the usual. The flesh, exotic capitol, and affordability were all good reasons to stay but in the last 10 years it's changed. After 5 years away from the region he came to Belgrade on a whim and said he was amazed. "If you want a glimpse of what EE was like in the 90's Belgrade is the only place left" and that it certainly won't last.

I will say that while winter here has been more fun I've had in any winter city I need to find somewhere warm for next year. The cold just doesn't help anything.
