disagree. 60 minutes did a investigation regarding the company disregarding safety standard of its products (hardwood flooring). It showed that they contain abnormal amount of formaldehyde, which is a cancer causing chemical. Initially they denied it but the evidence was there that they were taking shortcuts to reduce cost and boost profits selling these.

If anyone is interested in investing in housing stocks, two companies that are solid are Lowes and Home Depot.

I believe this thread is more for individual stock pickers, but check out bogleheads.com, both wiki and forum.

Decide on asset allocation.

Think about taxes and using tax-advantaged accounts first.

Get a Vanguard account and create a simple portfolio.

Dollar cost average: invest automatically every month or every couple of weeks.

Don't freak out if the market fluctuates. Don't try to time the market unless you really know what you're doing (the vast majority of people, including me, don't).

Everyone here should check out the app called ibillionaire. Shows all the billionaire hedge fund managers portfolios and exactly when they buy and sell shares. I missed out on buying maxlinear which soros bought about a week and a half ago at 9.28 per share, it's now at 13.20 per share. Up 42%.

Follow people like ackman and soros and you'll do very well for yourself.

People have this perception of striking rich in stocks but most are emotional. The best way to invest is have a thesis and back it up with numbers.

I'd be careful trying to follow what the hedge funds are doing. The information you receive can be dated by up to 3 months by the time funds have to file a 13F. By the time the info comes public the funds could be out of the position, or the stock has already run up.

My individual stock picks for the most part are lumped in with my gaming money used at casinos and sports betting: it's just play money.

Warning: I like taking risks, do not follow what I do.

I want to get into TRF below 10 and it's getting close to that price. The way I look at things is if something falls 70-90% in value, or if something tends to spend 80% or more of its time above a value, then the risk of owning it is low (at this point, it will feel exactly the opposite). This fund looks like it spends about 75% of its time above 12 and it is currently 80%+ off its ten year high.

Justice Department investigating potential airline collusion

This should make a nice buying opportunity for airline sector stocks. With Oil cheap their making a killing in profits. Little slap on the wrist fine if anything comes from this.

The Chinese market has been getting hammered, but it appears to really be in trouble. A great buying moment may be on the horizon, as well as a shorting one of course. I thought suspending IPO's to keep people from shifting money away from other stocks seemed desperate, but when I read this I realized how much fear there really is right now.

Though I have only been investing for a relatively short period of time I have been doing relatively well in a Canadian market that has been weak the last few months. I have been looking for stocks hitting new highs or breaking up from resistance, while setting tight stop loss positions. A few of my Canadian positions...

Dollarma DOL-T- This position has been a steady performer since I started. While I would have liked to get in earlier (I bought at $66) It has continued to go up.

Canfor CFP-T I bought this stock about a week ago and it is up slightly. I might add to it a little bit.

Theratechnologies TH-T - I bought this stock just as it was hitting a new high and it shot up 17% the next day. Good for a higher risk position.

CRH Medical Corp CRH-T - Again I bought this stock on the break through resistance to a new high last week. Its been up though a bit volatile.

I am staying in cash right now too and waiting to go long China, though very tempted to short it now too. Thinking it might take 4-7 months for China to find a low, unless it's going to rally to one last high now. Doesn't look to likely.

I'm also keeping cash on the sidelines for now.

One thing that has caught my eye, however, is the ACE/Chubb merger. If there is a flashcrash or fast sell-off, I'll probably pick up one or the other.

You could buy ACE but don't buy Chubb. The fact that ACE is going to acquire Chubb is already priced in, so there would be not upside

Steve9, thanks for sharing. I did a read on Seeking Alpha. I guess with 2 dividend cuts in 3 months, it probably won't push for more cuts. Interesting long term to play - as oil recovers that yield would skyrocket.

Sorry if this has been covered before, but how do you research and invest in Chinese stocks? I don't think my Fidelity account lets me access those because they're outside of the U.S.-based stock exchanges.
