resources for new travelers
Hello all, new traveler just getting started and I am trying to figure out what some of the best resources are to scope out the ins and outs of places you would like to visit (i.e. accomodations/things to do etc.) I know there are sites like black tomato that do all the leg work for you but there is a premium you pay for that. Aside from skiming through travel blogs what else does every one use to do their "homework" prior to traveling some where? Thanks

Lodging research:

I like Wikitravel.org or Lonely Planet's PDF guides (usually 5 bucks or less for a city).

Nightlife/Game:

Locals, this forum.

Usually countries have nightlife websites. The best one I found for brasil is http://www.obaoba.com. Whatever country you go to they probably have a similar site. This is good for the schedule of what to do on certain nights. But I think this forum has the most information on good nightlife information and what places are good to swoop. You can't find data on any other sites like the data here as far as gaming in foreign lands.

And Ireland.

Read the lonely planet culture section and then ditch the book when you get to town. The best thing to do is walk up to some young, college-age kids and ask them where the best clubs are. Of course, if college-age club scenes aren't really your thing, you could always just ask the expats.

Boots on the ground research always turns out better.

Definitely agree on the couchsurfing advice too. Even if you don't stay with them, there are plenty of people who are more than happy to meet up with you for a drink at their favorite bar or restaurant, and they'll usually give you the scoop on where to go.

Beyond All Seas

"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe.
To be your own man is a hard business. If you try it, you'll be lonely often, and sometimes
frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself." - Kipling
