Thanks for all the suggestions. Being kindleless and in Brazil limits my choices a bit, but I ended up getting The Power of Now.

In the past this is the kind of book I would scoff at as self help drivel (mostly because my dad has a library of self help shit and not much to show for it) but I will approach it with an open mind and update this thread with my thoughts after I read it.

I also bought The Alchemist which I remembered as being somewhat inspiring when I read it a decade ago. Now that I can speak Portuguese I'll be able to read it in its original form and with a much different vantage point.

Hopefully I'll get to several other of these books as well.

I can't believe so many guys recommended The Power of Now. Some of the corniest, clichéd drivel I've ever read. But anyway, I do like Hermann Hesse and also check out Shantaram by Gregory Roberts.

The complete works of Swami Vivekananda - it has 9 volumes. I have read only volume 1 but highly influenced by it. Big fan of vivekananda.

I find great truths in Tolle's teachings. But I can understand the resistance. I probably would not have been open to them myself if not for the fact that I experienced what he talks about before I ever knew who he was.

I came across this recently... It's an article by Elliot Hulse which is basically putting out some wisdom identical to that which Tolle presents, albeit using more masculine language:
