Got it. Really had to dig back into my pre-teen days as a kid playing Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic to remember this: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Cortosis-weave

The relevant portion of the text: "Cortosis-weave was a swordsmithing technique commonly used on high-quality vibroblades and other melee weapons when combat with opponents wielding lightsabers was considered to be likely. It also was a descriptor for equipment that had been crafted utilizing cortosis ore. Cortosis-weave was employed primarily because it made the weapon able to withstand lightsaber blows. They could also be fashioned into armor or other gear. Weapons needed very little cortosis to be effective but armor required a substantially larger amount. The greater quantity provided an additional benefit to wearers though—a lightsaber would deactivate after contact was made with cortosis armor. Cortosis was extremely rare though and, thus, extremely expensive, resulting in few weapons and armor made with it."


Assuming the hilt and guard of the lightsaber uses this type of weave it could theoretically withstand the blows of a lightsaber in combat.

Now excuse me, I have to go get laid to wipe out the shame of this nerd out.

I'm guessing it's meant to function like a hilt on a sword. A defensive tool, not an offensive one. I'm not a fan either though, sometimes I think they change things just so they can pretend they had an impact.

I'll definitely be watching it when it's released, but I'm keeping my expectations low. I've only seen 3-6, but I've heard some awful things about 1-2. 3 was pretty lame for the most part too.

Fisher, Ford, and Hamill are all coming back for it. Should be interesting. Hamill was an awful actor, I wonder if he has taken classes in the past 40 years.

This chick is in it too. Guarantee she'll be playing an alien.

Hamil was amazing as the Joker in the Batman cartoons, cartoon movies, and video games. Hamil made the most iconic Joker laugh to date. His acting is spot on now.

I can't see it being any worse than the prequels. I gave up on those when they killed Darth Maul instead of Jar Jar Binks in the first movie.

Thing is everyone would have cheered if Jar Jar died. Maul's death to me was the saddest part of that very first movie in the new trilogy. Such an awesome character and character design.

They missed out on the oppurtunity to have maul as the Emperors first cyborg first hand. They did this in the TV show clone wars though.

Someone should program a flash game where the player as Darth Maul gets to slice as many Jar Jar Binkses in 5 minutes as possible. This would relieve the anger and frustration of millions of star wars fans who simultaneously fell to dark side due to hatred for this gungan. The time limit is there to give player a challenge as obviously it's impossible to lose.

I don't remember anything in original movies about empire being racists. Sure they appeared spaciesist, with only humans forming ranks, but I thing caring about race within a species in a world with hundreds of sentient species is a bit absurd.

Anyway I suspect this black stormtrooper is actually a hero wearing stormtrooper uniform, like Luke and han did in the original movie.

I don't think it will be any good at all.

Forget the controversies over various politically correct topics right now. Obviously those detract from recent movies but there's an even more important trend than that.

This, like so many other things coming out of Hollywood now, is basically just milking a franchise that has long reached its natural limit for a quick cash getaway. This is basically what's happening with all these endless sequels, prequels, midquels, reboots, etc. etc. They are the detritus of franchises whose glory days are long behind them attempting to make money on the brand name alone.

Star Wars as a blockbuster film franchise reached its natural limit in 2005 with Revenge of the Sith. That completed the arc of the Star Wars story - the corruption and redemption of Anakin Skywalker through his own journey and the journey of the son who redeemed him. The evil that corrupted him also got its just desserts in the end.

Yes, the first two movies in prequel trilogy were hands down terrible and the third was at best mediocre, but at the very least they were part of the original story, the furnace that fueled the rise of the franchise.

What this is is just an overshoot, analogous to cheap credit and debt to support consumption well beyond its natural limit. The product will thus be stale, lifeless, and overdone. They'll sprinkle some fancy CGI to pretend that everything is OK, much like the wider society sprinkles smartphones on us to make us believe everything is OK. It's the same thing with Star Wars as it has been with many other franchises, most infamously now Mad Max. Feminist neurosis is to be expected from a franchise desperately trying to cling on and be relevant beyond its natural limit of expansion.

It will be the same with this one. Mark my words.

I liked in the original series the light sabers seemed more dangerous and heavy. They didn't do as many crazy things with it since they were more concerned about injuring themselves and the battles seemed more realistic.

I expect them to do more battles like the prequels which seemed to throw out physics and the dangers of dealing with a weapon that could easily dismember the user. It also seemed more choreographed like a dance as well.

I hated what JJ Abrams did to Star Trek. He took all the depth and substance out of it and turned it into just another flashy action flick full of one liners. They work as flashy action flicks but its not Star Trek. Then again, Star Wars was never meant to be as "deep" as Star Trek so his formula will probably work alright. Its a space opera, not a political drama.

One of the lead villains has been confirmed to be GOT she-bull Gwendolyn Christie, to answer previous questions about stupid feminist "bad ass female lead" tropes.

I'm looking forward to the space battles with X-Wings and TIE Fighters and the return of practical effects, and seeing the old faces again. That's about it. I'm not looking forward to seeing how Abrams and co. have carelessly tossed the last few decades of expanded universe material out of the window.

Yes, I'm getting that pop-up repeatedly when I have this thread open.

I watched Episode IV for the first time in years last night. It brought back memories as I'm old enough to remember when it originally hit the theaters in 1977. It's the only movie I know that had viewers of all ages whooping and hollering and giving other strangers "low five" (this was before the high five caught on) as they were walking out of the theater. It was like nothing that anyone had ever seen before.

All the Star Wars movies since then plus many other Sci-Fi operas seem to be attempts to recapture that feeling, even just a little of it.
