The mistake that really bothered me was when they left the earth's orbit they burned radial - the standard orbital transfers all start with a prograde burn.

Yea the way they left the alien planet versus earth bothered me too.

One was a staged rocket launch while the other ones were like star trek shuttle craft. They should have made that consistent.

Overall I LOVED the movie though. I don't think it will win the Oscar because of the slight let down and forced plot near the end. But I thought it was a very ambitious movie. Climatically it is unparallelled. Also it's the first movie that I've seen describing time dilation and other heavier laws of physics. And it's incredible that Nolan can combine that with some tear jerking and emotionally wrenching moment.

RE: Inerstellar - an excellent movie
Saw this movie yesterday. Mind-blowing, to say the least! It's well filmed, characters are interesting (especially Matt Damon's Dr. Mann, he really ramps up the tension and breathes new life into the movie after he joins the story in the 2nd half), and it's amazingly consistent.

I'm not rocket scientist so obviously I will miss and won't be bothered by subtle technical details (other than the obvious fantasy of what goes on inside a black hole), but paying attention to time flows "on the other side", checking planets, their different characteristics... it's all amazingly vivid and fitting together. Imagery is beautiful and stirring. The AIs shown in the movie are just right, with just the right balance between humanity and machinery. Humor is clever. I didn't like the cunt daughter at first (even though I could understand her), but after a while I grew to like her tenacity. The only thing I'd change would be the protagonist not surviving the black hole - as others said, it would make the sacrifice more meaningful.

10/10, would watch again.

p.s. can someone explain how they're not sinking in the water on the first planet? Is it due to its water being more salty/dense (like Dead Sea), or due to lower/higher gravity? Never mind, I saw the explanation on page 2.

Also:

Quote:Anne Hathaway needs to grow her damned hair out.

Unlike Jennifer Lawrence and Miley Cyrus, I don't think she cut it due to political reasons, but just roles that demanded it. I recall an interview with her saying that she misses it. Besides, aren't female astronauts supposed to have short hair? Long hair might be a bit awkward in zero gravity...

Saw it last night. The best science fiction movie ever. I was watching with my mouth open half of the time. I got headache trying to process all the information.

One thing I'm disappointed is that they didn't give any explanation whatsover about how the earth got so fucked up and the crops just ceased to grow. It just...happened. Did I miss something?

RE: Inerstellar - an excellent movie
They mentioned crop blights a few times as I recall. I didn't pay that much attention to that aspect of the story because Hollywood is especially clueless when it comes to environmental issues, but monocultures are pretty vulnerable. I guess they were suggesting specific crops were hit with such bad blights that they became extinct, and nobody thought to try out polycultures.

There was also some kind of dust bowl going on.

Of course the only reason that stuff could happen is if the society rejected science so thoroughly that they ignored everything we learned about industrial agriculture in the 20th century. Plausible, given the way the society was portrayed, but it would require an almost religious rejection of science.

I think the point they were trying to make was humans suck and all we do is destroy things, though.

I wouldn't watch it again. Too long.

How would you know?

We have a very good idea of what would happen, fatal compression, but we do not KNOW. Science has huge gaps in knowledge on the function of black hole.

I was just going off this:

Quote:If you are above the falls, you can get away if you paddle fast enough, but once you are over the edge, you are lost. There's no way back. As you get nearer the falls, the current gets faster. This means it pulls harder on the front of the canoe, than the back. there's a danger that the canoe will be pulled apart. It is the same with black holes. If you fall towards a black hole feet first, gravity will pull harder on your feet than your head, because they are nearer the black hole. The result is, you will be stretched out longwise, and squashed in sideways.. If the black hole has a mass of a few times our sun, you would be torn apart, and made into spaghetti, before you reached the horizon.

But, you're right that there hasn't been anybody who has actually tried going in.

RE: Inerstellar - an excellent movie
I saw it last night in Cairo, sound was not good, small theater but not too atrocious.

One thing when you see these movies abroad is how the idea of America saves humanity is a part of it. Like with Independence Day, War of the Worlds, Battle: LA, etc. So many American flags flying in the movie, and of course all of the settings are American, even playing baseball on Cooper Station in the end.

Well done, Hollywood!!

RE: Inerstellar - an excellent movie
I absolutely hated it for a variety of reasons:

SPOILERS: On IMDB had a good rating, but this utter and complete crapfest of a movie should get -8 ratings:

Facepalm3

Main points of idiocracy:

- blatant global warming propaganda - mankind would be already dead or living only deep underground if only corn barely grows - I guess genetically modified corn for GMO pushing crap
[Image: clip_image002_thumb.png?w=604&h=330]
- nevermind that the global warming agenda is false and they pushed global cooling in the 1970s and now wish they would have jumped on the cooling agenda
- the earth and most living creatures survived major asteroid impacts, super-high CO2 levels in ancient times (CO2 at which also mankind would have survived easier btw) and even one bloody major volcano can produce more CO2 than the combined industrial output of entire humanity
- wars would not exist when food is short and shit hits the fan non-stop? Yeah - right - it would mean slaughter of infinite proportions
- So mankind is dying on the planet and all they come up is a secret underfunded NASA program?
- The science is mindnumbingly infinitely stupid - the most ridiculous thing was that shitty water planet that was supposed to warp time 1 hour meaning 15 years everywhere else - yeah right - planet right next to a black hole - close enough to already impact time, but not close enough to impact the atmosphere, gravity etc.
- the worst is the ending, which does not make even any sense - 5-dimensional aliens - yes it was him after going through the Black Hole and finding himself only connected via love to his daughter only being able seemingly to impact the library and other key events. He can push books off the shelf if he does it strongly enough heh.

No - the shit is soooo much nonsense that I cannot even vomit enough to express all my feelings. Was equally crappy like that Ethan Hawke transgender-time-travel shit-piece of a movie called PREDESTINATION.

For fuck's sake - CONTACT with Jodie Foster or even Star Trek movies on interstellar travel make much more sense. The makers of this movie deserve to clean latrines for a year by hand.

Here a user on IMDB had a good synopsis of the shit: IMDB ratings are no longer dependable - I guess votes being bought by PR agencies is sufficient. All the propaganda nowadays warps most movies so much that they become un-watchable. Save yourself the cash - buy it online later, where you can fast-forward most of the crappy stuff that Hollywood puts out. TV series nowadays are better than most movies. Even the so-called special effects especially from distant planets were unimaginative and boring - from dust-bowl, to shallow water-world, to ice crap shit-space - to something marginally better in the end. Did they want to stress the point that mankind should be grateful about our planet and accept all UN Global Warming directives when energy and water is going to be rationed and all you will be a able to eat is 90% of GMO corn? Yes - you worms accept our will, because you have seen what happens if you breathe out too much and eat steak - dust-bowl earth and crappy planets....

Quote:This was one Turkey of a SCI FI. This is my report.

Near the beginning of the movie a family gets a flat tire in the dust-bowl corn fields of any mid-western alternate reality. The dad is played by Mud and in his alternate world he hangs a 90 and does like SEVENTY through the corn without the slightest bump, all the while deftly hacking his laptop to commandeer a nearby drone.

After stealing the drone, Mud decides that he must leave his kids to prove to their uppity teacher that NASA really did go to the Moon. He is chosen by Alfred to blast off with Catwoman in a reasonably 20th century 3-stage rocket that will eventually dock with an incredibly advanced 22nd century space station/rocket-ship. After leaving Earth, they need no longer adhere to primitive Earth technology. Now they can do anything that already ever happened on Star Trek, including Cryo-Sleep.

When they wake up feeling refreshed they head for a cool wormhole that Stanley and Alfred told them about. They are hoping to find a new planet for all the okies to go to, at least that's Plan A. There is a Plan B but it's sub PC and is not going to work for Mud who is all about hurrying on up back to Earth so he can save everyone.

Gotta say more here about Mud's robot chum as he is remarkable with a fingerprint smeared body consisting of multiple swinging HVAC ducts that can navigate through zero gravity, run across boulder fields, and even walk on water, not to mention rescue damsels while carrying on charming banter with a voice socially engineered to be annoying.

After they go through the wormhole they go to a waterworld where the laws of physics need not apply. Each hour they spend is equal to 17 years on Earth. Where's Einstein when you need him? The whole planet is covered with 3 feet of water which is fortunate since Catwoman can't swim.

Back on Earth, the dispossessed are aging rapidly with their old-school monster trucks and other quaint artifacts of 20th century dust-bowl Arkansas. Mud's kids get growed up and environmentally challenged, but it's really about how Mud abandoned them.

Eventually Mud and Catwoman go to a really crappy planet that seems even worse than dust-bowl earth, yet they feel hopeful that they might move their famblys there, perhaps down under the frozen ammonia glaciers. They find a sinister guy who looks like Matt Damon's dad who gets all evil and blows stuff up. Mud decides that he's gonna take the tin man and fly into the near-bye black hole that is just 14 billion light years away.

Mudbot knows in his crazy-brilliant, hillbilly-sage way, that if he just makes a B-line through the B-hole he is going to pop the cherry. With Hans Zimmer in the house Mud trips his way through the five-dimensional space. After an abbreviated acid trip (Thanks Kubrick, thanks Trumbull) Mud skips the room with the old man and starts floating around in an empty library. He peers through the stacks at his past-life capers while pondering the tangled twists which makes him feel real sad and then he feels real mad and yells at his little daughter who can't even hear him. If only he could communicate using just his sheer acting....

Meanwhile, Mud's grown-up daughter on Earth also feels sad and mad and she tells her brother to Argo F himself for not joining her in her cave. She doesn't like the air quality either so she torches her bro's corn crop. Harsh. Then she starts moping around in the old family library, the very same one that Mud is trapped behind the stacks in, except Muds library is made by humans from the future. At least that's what the robot said. Suddenly while pondering a wristwatch big daughter has an epiphany and realizes that all you really need is… …. wait for it…. Gravity!

Lots of good opportunities to cry here, what with Mud screaming at the little and big version of his daughter and having epiphanies right and left. Something (no idea what) clicks and Mud tells the robot to get binary and convert the 'quantum data' into Morse code so that he can power-emote it to the wristwatch that daughter is trippin on. Wait, did she just hallucinate? or did the little minute hand start jiggling around? It did do a jiggly wiggly and the jiggles are obviously coded gravity-signal wiggles coming through the black-hole bookshelf world from her crazy hick-savant dad.

Well that about wraps it up. Needless to say,... big daughter trans-codes the Quantum Jiggles into FORTRAN code and saves the world or at least makes it a lot less dusty and so that people get to go to Hawaii again.

Years later the big daughter becomes really ancient daughter and cryo-naps in the hope of seeing Mud again. Darned if some of the freshly quantum jiggled peoples don't figure out how to make space rockets again and they even find Mud just in time so that he can come back and be ignored by everybody he saved. Apparently the robot ran off with catwoman so ancient daughter wakes up and figures it is just so much easier to go to Saturn with her tube and her hospital Bed. A bunch of other family members go with her just for convenience sake and they all gather around her bed. When Mud comes in they decide to walk out en masse without even glancing at Mud even though he is their great gran-pappy and saved the world and discovered quantum gravity love.

More sweet, sweet tears as dad and daughter commiserate. After an appropriate interval daughter wisely tells daddy to go and enjoy his youth, steal a spaceship, and try and win catwoman back from the swinging robot.

Well, never in the movie is "global warming" mentioned, nor they claim the weather is hotter. All they say is that crops are dissapearing and the only food left is corn.

RE: Inerstellar - an excellent movie
Good review Zelcorpion. But 2 things:
They did mention dropping bombs on starving masses. So there was war for the remaining crops.
They never said anything about global warming. They only focused on the quantum science, as the movie is based on the science of Kip Thorne the astrophysicist, and therefore did not even bother to explain why the crops went extinct. That was what annoyed me the most, an apocalyptic movie that didn't bother explaining any reason for the apocalypse.

But so far the best reasons Hollywood has been able to come up with to explain the apocalypse are zombies, robots, aliens, meteors, global warming and a crazy government experiment that stopped the rotation of the earth's core (The Core). So I'm not expecting to see anything that makes sense anymore. Maybe it's because, if it had been possible to come up with a realistic explanation for apocalypse, the apocalypse would have already happened by now. Maybe the Interstellar guys knew about this flaw and they avoided explaining it on purpose and left it to the audience's imagination.

This is not true. It was "blight" which caused the crops to not grow. Progressively fewer crops could grow, due to "blight", which sounds like a bug or disease. He specifically did NOT include Global Warming as the cause. And many liberals who noticed were furious about it. And many conservatives who noticed took it as a "wink-wink".

It certainly looked like that - and the reference to corn as the leading GMO crop seems clear to me also.

There would have been plenty of reasons for an impending apocalypse - for one the sun mysteriously overcharging for a time - they could have constructed a story where the sun was about to extinguish life as we know it. But then of course mankind would have done everything to reach other stars as salvation and would have pooled all resourced into it.

No - they wanted to hit the usual malthusian-we-will-all-drown-in-horse-shit-crap. There are too many people, not enough food, we are killing earth by all the cows farting, global warming despite barely leaving the mini-ice-age between 1300-1600 (never mind that the hockey stick was pure propaganda as earth was warmer around 1000 when Greenland looked like Scotland and around the year zero as the Romans occupied Germany while being clad in clothes which would have let them freeze to death in our current climate).

Implied propaganda works always better, but I am used to it - Hollywood almost always includes their current PC crap - if it's not feminism, then something else. Of course it was feminism now too as the genius scientist was a woman.

The entire plot was nonsense - never mind if global warming was their intended or embedded additional message.

They probably thought that they are going to pull a mystic Stanley Kubrick, but they were just spitting crap. The movie Avatar made 1000 times more sense was also by far more visually stunning.

Besides - the catastrophe described in the movie would have wiped out pretty much anything on earth - it simply made no sense whatsoever - a global dust bowl? All crops dying? If all crops were dying, then all plants were dying. Oxygen was depleting? So the oceans stopped producing oxygen too? How the fuck is there a global dust-bowl - even on remote islands like the Fijis? This was just too stupid on top of the rest of the 5-dimensional-crap.

The movies should get an honest 3/10 rating on IMDB just like the hundreds of people who gave it 1-3 stars, but were outnumbered by the hundreds of paid trolls who gave it 10/10 stars. In recent years crappy movies are getting higher reviews than The Godfather or Shawshank Redemption.

What the fuck did i just watch?
So the wormhole is not the blackhole?
Can planets orbit around a blackhole as if it were a sun? I always assumed the gravity would just pull everything in..
Why is time different for them? Those space ships never get close to the speed of light, if a wormhole bends space so that point A and B become the same point then shouldnt the travel be instantaneous isnt that the whole point?
How did the people of earth got saved? Where did they go, how did they used the knowledge they gained?
In 50 years that guy didnt fucked anne hathaway? Not even once?

The entire movie is mind-numbingly stupid. Warping time planet, but leaving matter peacefully alone. Also even if he is willing to enter the black-hole. It would still take hundreds of years of travel to enter it completely. Those things are massive.

They even justify their crap by saying that they have calculated the mathematics right. Yeah - I wanna see them set foot on that time-warping planet first.

RE: Inerstellar - an excellent movie
I saw a bootlegged version. I thought it was "meh" the first time I watched it. Then decided to watch it a second time about a week ago and enjoyed it much more. At first, I just didn't fell as though Matthew's character as an astronaut felt believable. Hathaway's character was extremely annoying and that speech about love being felt across all dimensions made me nauseous. I was wishing Matt would've slapped her after that wave scene.

The pace of the movie was strange. He stumbles across a secret NASA facility then next thing you know he's piloting one of their spaceships. And who were "they" that put the wormhole there? If they wanted to help humans why did they place it near Saturn? Why not place it right next to Earth? I really don't get what the significance of that was, but okay, it's just a movie.

The wave scene on planet Miller was really one of the most exciting scenes I've seen in a sci-fi movie. That was really one of those sitting on the edge of your seat moments. The robot CASE running to save Hathaway's character at the last moment I think was the zenith of the movie. That's was just one of those scenes I could play over and over and be amazed at every detail. I agree with everything weambulance said about the scientific realty of the ocean planet itself. The wave heights in an ocean that shallow make no sense and if they gravity is strong enough to create mile high waves it would've probably ripped the planets atmosphere away. But nonetheless, wow, what a scene. That world was really just a creepy place. I've had nightmares about giant waves like that, so seeing it in a movie was really intriguing to me.

I think the robots were the best thing about the movie. Their combination of natural voices and personality yet non-humanoid form was something really different and imaginative.

The ending was just a big let down and made no sense whatsoever. He falls into a black hole and then ends up behind his daughter's bookshelf. Yeah... Nuff said.

All in all, a decent but not great movie. I think it had potential to be much better. Visually it was great, I loved the robots and the action scenes, but on plot and storyline, it was a bit of clusterfuck.

RE: Inerstellar - an excellent movie
SPOILER ALERT

Wow, it surprises me that i'm just one of the few guys here that really disliked this movie. Let's see.

- Former pilot hasn't flown a plane in 10 years, is a farmer now, can fly a multiple billion dollar space shuttle through black holes into other galaxies a week later. No instruction or training needed.

His daughter on the farm happened to turn to be a brilliant physicist. She also doesn't give a crap about her heroic father for decades.

They also happen to live close to a secret NASA base. The only one in the whole wide world because of course America needs to save the day trope is in effect.

- There's a short haired feminist on board who risks a one in million, multiple billion dollar operation and not to mention the future of mankind because "she's in love with Matt Damon Character" and want to visit his planet to see if he's still alive. Other astronauts are OK with this. Guy turns out to be a bastard.

- There's the token black guy who dies. I'd like to see a movie where the black guy leads and whites dies for once but I think that's too much to ask for in Hollywood.

- That utterly ridiculous robot who talks like a (funny) human but looks like a mix of a ATM machine and a candy vending machine. Has bulky arms (?) and non fingered hands that can magically do everything. Seriously that's a future robot? Of all the ways you could have had him look, this rectangle block of steel with an old MS DOS screen is all the million dollar design department comes up with.

- The HIV positive transgender astronaut in a wheelchair who tries to save the rainforest. Oh wait! that's probably in part two.

When I saw the credits a lot was explained to me. It was a Nolan brothers production. I fiercely hated the Dark Knight series too. Well mostly the utterly ridiculous last part with Bane.

Movie graphics were stunning though. Plot was just as likely as Sharknado.

End of rant

Matt Damon's character in that movie was about equivalent to his other starring role:

End of rant

1. I agree
2. There was too many scenes in the first 1/3 establishing how smart she was and her potential, Michael Caine's character takes her under his wing when her Dad leaves anyway. Cooper didnt tell Murph that the world was ending and he was its only chance or whatever. She just thought he was going on a secret space mission. She learns by the time she's an adult.
3. It's an American hollywood blockbuster, what do you expect. The movie is Nolan's love letter to the golden era of NASA and American invention. Doesnt make much sense for some other country to save the world.
4. Where you doing something else while watching the movie? Almost impossible to misunderstand if you were watching. Hathaway's character DIDNT want to go to Damon's planet. The other planet was her boyfriends.
5. There was a white astronaut who died first and was way less significant to the movie. The black astronaut dies so now we can get the two main characters and A list stars of the movie more in the spotlight. Race doesnt have anything to do with it.
6. I liked it. Way less cliche then the humanoid robots in every movies these days. Makes the characters of TARS and CASE work better by not looking human. The robots were left overs from the military. The world they're living in hasnt been inventing things for years. The robots are old tech.

Honestly man I'm going to choose to believe you only skimmed through the movie or something. I wouldn't rate the movie that highly, but all those points are just YOU not paying attention.

RE: Inerstellar - an excellent movie
Meh, it was an interesting movie. Good to at least see some story creativity for once, instead of the 1000th rehash of 'guy has combat skills, family member attacked, piles bodies in retaliation', or 'police with attitudes vs narcotrafficers', or retarded Michael Bay 'make movie before writing a script' shit.

RE: Inerstellar - an excellent movie
Upon further reflection (such as reading the alternative ending), I have concluded that lots of finely made flash in this movie really can give the person an inflated sense of its worth. Once the shock and awe fades, you really stop thinking so much of it as you did right after watching.

RE: Inerstellar - an excellent movie
I had to turn on subtitles I couldnt understand wtf they were saying, especially when the old Dr was on his death bed and revealed he fucked them all, theres no way you could understand what he said.

I thought it was a very dark moment when Matt Damon said he went back into cryo-sleep on the planet without setting a wake-up alarm, as he had completely given up hope of being rescued. The idea of doing that is more extreme than suicide IMO.

The 'winning' astronauts chosen for the Mars-One mission will get to experience many aspects of this movie first hand as they will suffocate/starve on a lonely ass rock in space.

RE: Inerstellar - an excellent movie
SPOILERS

Things I liked about this movie:

- Imagery/stunning cinematography (ocean planet shots, frozen planet, Cooper going through the wormhole/blackhole)

- Great acting by McConaughey, everyone else was so-so

- the glimpse of future robotics as personified by TARS. Seemed very doable and realistic

- Highly entertaining despite being incredibly long. I can only think of a handful of other films that held up this well at long running times (Avatar, T2, Godfather to name a few)

Things I disliked

- Anne Hathaway's acting and dumb dyke hair

- The last leg of the film where the "love is the answer" theme goes into full swing. Cooper pushing the Morse code through that fucking library.....I had to go grab a vomit bucket at that point.

- Cooper living next to a top secret NASA facility and just stumbling upon it by accident

Overall though, a great flick. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed it. Very interesting. I never really understood time dilation and they captured it really well. I also enjoyed the concept of other dimensions from a 3D one.

However, I found Hathaways character absolutely annoying. In any sort of setting like that you're going to have cool level headed jocks making decisions. Imagine if Apollo 13 had a girl on it I doubt they would have even made it to the moon.

I think they needed a girl for surrogate births to do plan B. I think the bigger issue is that even a woman Ph.D biologist wouldn't make a speech promoting decision-making based on the Huey Lewis song from Back to the Future.

Oh, and no way they'd be that dumb to even try landing on the time warped planet. Even if you COULD start a new civilization there the universe would die a heat death within a few million years, totally fucking over your evolutionary descendants.
