The 23 years gone part was the best part of the movie. It showed the real consequences of what they were doing

Loved it. Best sci-fii film in years. I can easily see this getting a best picture nomination at this oscars.

Yeah Hathaway's stupid "love" speech was weird and out of place but that doesn't wreck the whole movie.

McConaughey was incredible in this film. My perspective of him as an actor has totally changed. I used to just dismiss him as some goofy eye candy for women in all those dumb rom-coms he did with Kate Hudson. Kind of like seeing Robin Williams do a serious role for the first time and you're like "damn, he's not just a clown, this dude can act."

RE: Inerstellar - an excellent movie
Saw it in IMAX. Pacing a little uneven. Things really accelerated at the end compared to the beginning. I laughed when you know who appeared as the scientist. That was so random. SPOILERS BELOW.

The sound in the movie was horrible though. Dialog was incredibly difficult to understand in many parts. I always thought that extreme tidal forces would rip apart any object falling into a black hole, but I guess they had to take some liberties. I almost thought it ended when McConaughey sacrificed himself, and it might have been a better ending. But then we got the old Hollywood happy ending and all was well.

Anne Hathaway needs to grow her damned hair out.

Yeah the sound got a lot of complaints. It didn't bother me too much although sometimes it got way too loud.

Hathaway's hair was absurd though. They spent two years traveling to Saturn, how come her hair didn't grow out during that time? I guess that even in space she was committed to looking like a bull-dyke.

Absurd complaint, since by this standard one guy should have had a huge fro and the star should look like a Skynyrd guitarist.

Directors should force their actors to get a few hours of sleep a night and shower once or twice a week to play the rough roles, get them to look how they should realistically

RE: Inerstellar - an excellent movie
I thought it was okay, but honestly I don't think it compares to any of the other movies Nolan directed except possibly Following, which I didn't see so I wouldn't know.

Ignoring the science bits--although as a geologist I was scratching my head at the bizarre planets--I just didn't like the plot because as others have said it relied on the weird love-magic to work. Everything about that was very flawed. I would've liked it quite a bit more if there really were some damn aliens acting as the "ghost" and Cooper just managed to get the black hole data back to his daughter so she could figure out how to save everyone. I thought it was stupid when he somehow magically survived, because that completely ruined his self sacrifice.

Basically everything in the last 1/4 of the movie was lame.

I also had some problems understanding dialogue over the sweLLLING dramatic music at some points, which was irritating. Twice I literally just threw my hands up thinking "I have no fucking idea what's going on, awesome." Fortunately the relevant plot points were recapped later on so I figured it out. That might have just been the venue, but from what I've read there were lots of sound problems with the movie.

Anyway, the broad concepts were really promising and I think the movie had the potential to be excellent, but it fell short. It just tried to do too much and got too freaking weird toward the end.

Yeah that was mainly a joke. Based on the fact that everyone was clean shaven I'm sure they were supposed to be cutting it. I was more just commenting on her dedication to being as unattractive as possible. She could have had shoulder length hair by the time she hit Saturn if she had wanted to.

Although Damon was rocking a freshcut when he woke up from hibernation. The whole black hole time-slow was probably the cause of that though.

In the grand scheme of things my hair complaints are the minor ones I had about the movie.

I thought that once you get into the black hole you are pretty much dead. It was over for me right there in the movie. No human being will survive 3 seconds in the black hole.

I wouldn't watch it again. Too long.

Well I thought the water planet would have a neat explanation, like that it was tectonically dead and the entire surface was covered in shallow water after half a billion years of erosion without uplift or subsidence. Or something like that.

Instead there were just crazy waves that don't make sense. What could cause them in that fashion? Nothing that I can think of. I can come up with some handwavium explanations of rapidly moving swells of that magnitude, but they'd be swells, not giant breakers; the water would've just gotten deeper really fast and the ship would've rode the wave, and nobody would've died since we saw that the spacesuits were buoyant when the dead guy was floating there after they left. Waves simply don't work the way they were portrayed in the movie.

The other planet, well, I'd need to see the movie again to lay out the specifics but my impression is whoever dreamed up that planet had next to no understanding of geology, and the physics don't make sense. It looked really cool, anyway.

You know how it is, movies necessarily prioritize "looks cool" over "realistic" and that's fine. I don't expect movie makers to worry about details that only a small percentage of the population would even notice. Even though I did notice, those details didn't ruin my enjoyment of the movie at all. But I admit I am left a bit disappointed at the way so many people are cumming in their pants over Interstellar being "the most scientifically accurate sci fi movie EVAR!" when so many scientific errors are apparent, even to this poor befuddled rock licker.

Tidal forces. The planet is spinning, and the gravitational pull from the black hole keeps the water more or less in the same place. Thats why the debris of the wreckage was in the same place, the waves just moved it up and down.

RE: Inerstellar - an excellent movie
Tidal forces would not create waves as portrayed in the movie, which was my point about swells. What causes breakers? Waves have a certain "depth", called wave base, which runs out when the waves hit land and the water gets shallow, and the waves crash over in a breaker. Little breakers, big breakers, doesn't matter the point is they happen because water goes from deep to shallow.

I'm not going to get into a long explanation of why--which would require background knowledge practically nobody here will have--but the subsurface ocean topography necessary for that kind of amazingly huge breaker just is not realistic. And, nothing in the movie that I recall suggested that the planet was spinning fast enough to have a second wave turn up in such a short period of time, such as a rapid daylight change.

Suppose the subsurface topography was just right for a huge breaker to turn up every few hours. They just happen to be hanging out on the edge of an inexplicably deep and very steep continental shelf, say, and hey it turns out a massive ice age just ended so that explains why the continental crust is all submerged. Sure, why not. Well, that continental shelf would get eroded away in very short order if a freaking huge bulge of water was nailing it every few hours; it would get smoothed right out in no time (more or less instantaneously on a geologic time scale). At which point the big breakers just wouldn't happen anymore.

Besides all that, the gravity causing those massive tidal bulges would do all kinds of other weird stuff to the planet. It would be tide locked, which has all kinds of implications, and the important one in this case is the tidal bulges wouldn't be moving anywhere. They would just be static, not waves.

I saw the movie twice. First time in IMAX and the second at a regular theater while my car was being worked on. The sound was irritating in the first 5 minutes at IMAX but the second time there was no issue with sound. I think it might be the individual theater's sound settings.

Remember the planet is orbiting a black hole. Maybe the forces making those waves are not coming from the planet itself.

We have a very good idea of what would happen, fatal compression, but we do not KNOW. Science has huge gaps in knowledge on the function of black hole.

RE: Inerstellar - an excellent movie
I watched half of a bootleg version and was bored so I stopped it. Maybe I'll give it another chance when a HD version is available.

I just really can't take these "deep space" movies seriously when they're all super-polished and when they've put an actor in them that doesn't fit the role. I love space themed movies as a genre, i.e. 2001, Moon, the original Solaris, and even Event Horizon. But the new Solaris (Clooney) and now Interstellar seem way more "Hollywood" than gritty deep space and resemble Armageddon a little too much (a movie I despise).

But like I said, I'll give Interstellar another go when it's released in HD.

RE: Inerstellar - an excellent movie
I usually fall asleep when watching movies late at night. I started this one in the theater at 10:30 and never nodded off. To put that in perspective I fell asleep watching Rocky at 10 o clock and The Godfather at 9:30.

There was only 2 major scientific mistakes that annoyed me. One, you could see the black hole, and two, it took like a minute to go through the wormhole.

I enjoyed the plot and the relationship between McConaughey and his daughter tugged at my emotions.

McConaughey absolutely nailed his part, wouldn't be surprised if he won an Oscar for it. Hathaway did ok, could have been better. Damon nailed the estranged scientist part. Did not see that plot twist coming.

For those on the fence about seeing it, I'd say it's about 5x better than Gravity. Beautiful images, few to no plot flaws, great story-line, and makes you think a little bit about issues in the world today (rampant consumerism, environment destruction, etc.) Also the very beginning was a little bit preachy.

Personally one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time.
