Health care, that's a complex subject man. I won't go into much detail. Actually the term "free" healthcare is somewhat of a misnomer. As there are 2 types of insurance Provincial Government medical and extended medical. In BC a single person pays $70 per month in premiums for the provincial government medical but it covers only certain services. Hospitals, doctors, a few other services. Extended health is usually through your employer for things like dental, eyes, massage, physio etc. Most people I know pay out of pocket for aspects of their health care. but I realize it depends which area of health care we are discussing.

Tell me about it. They cover no dental at all. Even for minors. And it is almost impossible to get a "family doctor" if you move to the Lower Mainland from outside the province. Most GP's are not taking new patients. The day clinics are OK, but you're out of luck if you want consistent medical attention from a doctor you get to know. Luckily for me I don't have any chronic conditions, and would never consider going to the doctor for something as simple as a cold or the flu (unless it resulted in 103F + temperature). The BC, and other provincial programs are effectively emergency programs. If you get into an accident or contract a serious disease you will be seen to. But otherwise they provide limited value.

There's definitely a lot of cultural pressure on them here too. The international students spend all their spare time in the library (honestly so does everyone whose not doing a bullshit major), they're not slacking.

Then the kids being sent to the U.S. might in fact be wealthier too. It's a fairly common thing for mainland Chinese in CA to buy houses/condos/cars for their kids. There are even entire neighborhoods where it's all made up of these people. A big portion of the San Gabriel Valley in CA has loads of wealthy mainland Chinese.

The STEM majors far outweigh the business majors in the U.S. too. The stereotypical nerdy asian fob engineer, I.T., or med degree image is very common in the U.S.

You go to Westwood in LA (UCLA) and you'll see young Chinese students driving around in $100,000+ sports cars and living in penthouses.
