RE: Best VPN service while traveling?
Corporations are beginning to block all VPN-recognised servers. Banking websites, airlines, major retail outlets, are all gradually shutting them out.

Anyone know a workaround?

I'm finding this to be true. They are becoming increasingly hostile to expats, travelers, and mobile folks who use VPN not just for privacy but also for access.

Really need a workaround pronto. Maybe some disruptive 'net technology can come along and mask your true IP address without going through a known VPN server...

Hola usually sorts out those problems. It's a peer-to-peer VPN, i.e. they route your connection through another Hola-user's PC. I use it for specific sites in addition to a VPN.

With VPNs appearing in Opera and maybe soon Chrome, this is a temporary problem. Eventually VPN users will be too numerous to ignore.

RE: Best VPN service while traveling?
While I certainly can't comment on whether it's the "best", I use AirVPN and all in all, I'm happy with it.

+ Located in Europe/the EU (Italy, to be precise), so unlike in the US they can't be easily forced to give up your data
+ Simple, user-friendly interface for all major platforms
+ A fairly big list of servers from different countries available
+ Many forms of payment accepted
+ Utilises OpenVPN which is open source software
+ Free trial possible for people who want to test it before buying a subscription
+ Can apparently be used hassle-free in China to access blocked sites (I haven't tested this yet)

- Not the cheapest option
- Interface can mess up your network settings (easy to restore, but a hassle) in Windows if not closed properly
- Not always stable - I've had cases where I was suddenly disconnected from a VPN server and the interface would connect to a different one.
- Speed is often only average, however I have only tried two other services which did not perform better

Is this in the US? I've never seen this anywhere before.

If you just need for web browsing, Opera browser has unlimited VPN integrated now.

If you have good connection at home, you can also setup your router to be VPN server for you.

I have used a VPN for years and have not noticed that problem. If anything, things have gotten better. When I first bagan using a VPN service, I had to log off my VPN to bid on ebay or make a payment with Paypal. Not anymore.

The problem might be the VPN service that you use. Many VPN services offer a free trial period. You might want to test a few. I use HideMyAss. It keeps logs, so it is not the best service if you are a criminal but it has servers in 190 countries. It offers great deals on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Huh. I'm using Airvpn which is great in all other respects. I emailed them. But from cursory research online, it does seem this problem is growing. Will be interested to hear more reports.

Sounds interesting, but what if someone's doing something very illegal, routed through your pc?

As far as I’m concerned Hola VPN has clouded reputation. It has been caught in selling user logs to advertisers. This case violates all basic principles of VPNs and illustrate that free unreliable services need to be avoided.
Anyway, trying to save money on such services you ride for a fall. But if you are pointed to use VPNs for free, I recommend looking for free trial versions. Hope this rating will be helpful [spam] These VPNs offer short-term protection, but meanwhile guarantee total privacy and anonymity.

I agree with your overall analysis, but for guys are are tight on money I would still urge them to use a decent free service at least for sensitive transactions performed on their computer. Do not allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good. "Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without." For example, years ago I used Cyberghost for awhile before I eventually obtained a paid service.

In other words, at the very least use a free VPN service whenever you do banking transactions or enter passwords. Here is what happened when I uncharacteristically used an unprotected computer:
