Some of this is innocuous - the "Hi, how are you?" throwaway stuff can't be considered harassment. Sure, the subtext is often "Hi, how are you? Want some dick?" but I don't think that's problematic. The "Damn, mami! You lookin' good," type shit is fairly rude. Not criminal or anything, but I can see how that would get fucking annoying. The guys that follow her, particularly the one that does it for five minutes in silence, are way out of line. If a rando was following me around I'd get pretty unfriendly pretty fast.

Yep. A few girls (though they weren't dumpy or bitter) have complained to me about it and it follows the same pattern - minorities, men much older than them, one girl complained about construction workers, etc. It all fits the same pattern: low-value men.

The fact of the matter is, most of that 2 minute video is filler. Most of it is "have a nice day" , "how are you" stuff that no one could possibly be offended by. They had to put the filler in to pad it out. If they showed the 20 seconds or so of crude game, that just wouldn't be enough.

So they go into Harlem, one of the worst neighborhoods in the US, and walk around for 10 hours , and they still have to pad out most of the resulting video with filler.

Imagine if they walked around in a nicer neighborhood like near Central Park . What kind of footage would they be left with? They'd probably have nothing.

The conclusion I draw then, is so called "street harassment" is not a problem for American women, unless you walk around a ghetto for 10 hours, in which case you might experience a few seconds of crude pick up by uneducated men.

Yeah I thought the same thing. In typical fashion, the video ignores the racial component as though this is something that happens to women whenever they walk in the street among any men. It's like one of those articles that talks about "teens" being violent at the mall. Just leave guys like me out of it already. I guarantee you this doesn't happen in a middle class white or asian neighborhood. Blacks and hispanics are usually much more aggressive in hitting on women, and it works out pretty well for them so who could blame them? If women want to stop this type of behavior they should try to persuade other women from being so receptive to it.

I can actually relate to this somewhat as I used to live in West Hollywood and used to get cat-called and followed by gay men. One weirdo tried to get me to come to his place and have him take photos of me. No thanks. While waiting for the bus on santa monica blvd in the summer of 2000, a guy tried to offer me 50 bucks to let him suck me off. He wouldn't leave me alone so i just decided to forget the bus and walk home instead.
