I love sweaters in teh fall and winter, think its a classic style, and in many ways easier than having to iron shirts and stuff. My favorite sweater oddly enough was a pretty cheap h&m sweater one of those really thick knit ones with the high neck folded over. Super comfortable and warm.

I think a tight/fitted v-neck sweater vest looks good under a jacket and over a collared shirt with no tie. In Japan, however, if I wear the sweater vest without a jacket girls will sometimes make fun of it, as here it's usually senior citizens who wear them.

What does everyone wear underneath sweaters if they are lower cut? Muscle shirts of a white V neck or maybe a plain white round collared shirt?

Either. Collared shirts especially for a slightly dressier look.

I'm surprised how many retailers don't sell any made with wool. The Polo company sells sweaters in cotton..Since when? I guess I have been living under a rock. I prefer mine in wool, good to know JCrew is still in that business.

I've got a nice fitting cashmere sweater. I think it looks cool when paired with a peacoat. But it doesn't look bad wearing it by itself.

One thing I like about sweaters is that they can help give you a slimmer look. As you know, a button-up shirt tucked into your pants will sometimes balloon out around the waist. A snug sweater will keep you looking streamlined. The problem is finding snug sweaters. Because of the obesity epidemic in the US, most retailers sell sweaters with plenty of material in the torso.

If you buy a sweater it's worth getting a wool one, much warmer. My wool cardigan is one of my favourite pieces in my wardrobe.

When it gets really cold though I prefer to rock a peacoat. Here's mine:

I Personally don't understand why people cover dress shirt and a tie with a v-neck sweater. (it's damn cold and it's a way of layering it?)
To me, it looks too 'closed'. (You see a guy buttoned up his shirt all the way and you feel like you want to unbutton one. That sort of feeling.)

Anyways, if you go to Banana Republic and they should either have merino wool sweater or silk/linen sweater.
Both are light sweaters. it will show all muscles on your upper body nicely because of its material.
I wouldn't recommend if you have a belly but this is a way to go if you are a fit guy.

If you wear a tight v-neck sweater over a crew-neck t-shirt, I suggest that the shirt be any shade of blue, burgundy, brick red, or black. White looks like underwear and grey looks dirty. If you have dark skin, then I think brighter colors like yellow, orange, or brighter reds would look good. Of course, if the "v" is small enough you can get away with wearing the sweater without a t-shirt underneath. Wearing a v-neck sweater with a v-neck t-shirt might look a little gay, but if it works for you I say go for it.

I've had some good success shrinking sweaters that were a little too loose around the middle. I soak them in boiling water in a pot on the stove top for about 10 minutes, stirring them around gently. Then I wring them out and throw them in the tumble dryer on high heat until they are completely dry. I've been able to shrink some light Merino wool sweaters by about an inch around the middle this way. They will also shrink vertically of course, so you have to be a little careful. A snug sweater looks 100% better than a sweater that is a little loose around the middle, IMO, if you have a flat tummy and/or lift weights.

If you want to try this but are afraid you might shrink the sweater too much, I understand that you should draw an outline on a big piece of paper of what size you want the sweater to be. Then, after you put it in the tumble dryer, you take it out every five minutes or so and lay it flat on the outline you drew. Once it fits, then you leave it to air dry while laying flat.
