I'm starting to get very nervous about being in a completely foreign country for a month on my own for the first time. The original plan when flights were booked was to go with a mate, but it looks like he won't be able to go. I'm at that point where I'm seriously contemplating booking another flight back 2 weeks earlier so the trip would only be two weeks in length. This would give me enough time to get the dental work I need done, do some partying and experience a few different places, but at the same time won't give me enough time to get bored, lonely and I'll be able to make it back home for a couple of epic events back in Kangarooland that are taking place while I'm currently scheduled to be away. It's a really difficult decision to make without experiencing being away solo for such a long period of time before.

What you think, good move or mistake?

You could do a short-term trip, but that's bowing to your fear of being by yourself (even if it's a fear of boredrom, it's still a fear). Run towards your fears, not away from them.

Fair point, but I think 2 weeks in a foreign country alone is already learning to face my fears. I could have easily bailed on the trip all together. I think it's more the fact that I don't want to miss these events back at home, without a guarantee that I will have as much fun by myself in another country.

^ Two weeks is a trip to Disneyland. You probably won't make it far beyond the tourist centers, if at all. You'll barely see anything, you'll misinterpret what you do see, and it'll all be a blur anyhow.

On the other hand, a month in a foreign country (especially alone!) is a chance to discover something new. About yourself, about the world, about everything you believe in.

What could you possibly be missing out on back home that is so "fun" that it's worth sacrificing the opportunity of a lifetime? Of a new possible path in life depending on what you discover out there?

When I first arrived in Thailand, I didn't leave for three and a half years. I assure you that I did not miss out on anything - things were the same as ever when I got "home."

If you aren't used to spending time on your own a month in a foreign country can certainly be a challenge, but I'm sure it will turn out to be one you're happy you took.

I'm leaving Monday next week to spend six weeks on my own in Thailand - so far with just a rough outline of a plan for the areas I'll be visiting - and I'm starting to get really excited.
It's only the second time I'll be on my own for more than a couple of weeks in a foreign country (first was when I moved to Bulgaria last year, but the first weeks there were focused as much on practical matters as sightseeing), but I'm a bit of an introvert and I'm sure I'd go crazy if I had to travel with someone for that length of time.

This is only going to be my second trip outside Europe - and I've never been to SEA before - so I expect to feel lost and confused at times, but the upside of taking a long trip (like a month or more) is that you have enough time to just slow down and relax for a day or two when you feel like it, doing nothing at all if need be, instead of feeling you have to rush through all the pre-planned sights, experiences and parties during a short vacation.

And I doubt it's going to be difficult at all to meet people in Thailand - other travelers in particular - that you might join up with briefly or maybe for several days for assorted activities.

Completely agree. If you have the time and money, find the will to do it. Try to befriend locals and not do touristy blah garbage. Even if its stupid sometimes see how people live that is different. And have sex with the women you meet along the way.

A month isn't even that long, let alone two weeks will fly by you. If you get bored in Bkk fly up to Chiang Mai or to Phuket for $40. I don't understand what can be so fun at home that you would cut a trip short.
If you do I would recommend changing your forum name to something more accurate.

One month will fly by, dude. There's no way you'll get bored in Bangkok after only one month.
The real danger is that you'll find Kangarooland too boring upon return, and you'll have to leave again.

My first trip to Bangkok was 7 months long, I never got bored until I got back to the States. I lasted 4 months back in Hamburgerland before I had to get out again for 8 more months.

Now I've been trapped here in 'Merica again since August, reading all these posts about you guys planning trips is making me jelly.

Go for a month, you will only end up wishing you stayed longer, pipeline a bunch of chicks from Thai friendly and thai cupid before you head off. That will keep you busy for at least a few weeks lol.

Adrenaline, given that you will be on your own, and you haven't been away alone for so long before, here is my advice:
- It isn't Australia. On average, the people in a club, bar, or party are not obnoxious, stupid, or arrogant. They are friendly, especially locals. Opening a conversation with a smile will generally get a warm response back, rather than being treated as an opportunity to smugly snub someone.
- Hence if you go to a club, a bar, an event or whatever, be very warm, social, and open. 'Hello, where are you from?' starts a conversation with any open and social person, even if they are Thai (they will say which city they're from).
- If you are smiling and being sociable, expect 1 warm response for every 1 or 2 snubs (in my case more snubs from foreigners than Thais, especially with women).
- If you are afraid of going into a place by yourself, yes it can feel a bit uncomfortable. Do not do what many guys do - and keep walking around. It is best to buy a drink at the bar, and stand in one spot (either at the bar, or just somewhere in the main area). Wandering around draws more attention to yourself and you being alone, and to any awkwardness you may feel about this, than standing in one spot does. You can't chink glasses with people nearby if you're marching around the club.
- Talking to guys doesn't detract from getting girls. Sometimes when I talk to a foreign guy who's there by himself, he gets defensive about it and moves off, because he's just there to try and get a girl. I doubt these guys actually have much success in getting a girl. Talking to a dude for 5 minutes advertises to any girls around you that you are sociable, open minded, and not a loner. It can easily segway into the both of you talking to a group of girls. On the very rare occasion that the dude turns out to be 'sticky' (trying to stay with you when you don't want him to), that is easily dispelled with a 'OK I'm going to keep looking for my (non-existent) friends, good luck with the chicks!' or just a 'OK I'm going to keep wandering around, good to meet you mate!' etc.

Also 1 month is nothing. That's around the time taken to ship something by Air Mail.

OP, at the very, very least you have Internet Game. Thai girls are usually glued to their phones and by nature always 'dating', even if they have a partner. Jump on the net and talk to some girls and you will be able to secure a date at least once a day if you want to.


Thai Friendly is often mentioned here, but as a long time user of, I strongly suggest gravitating towards Tinder and to a lesser degree Badoo when in Bangkok.

Girls on Thai friendly(most):
Choose one or more of three, Speaks Bad English / Prostitute/ Not Attractive

Girls on Tinder
10x more likely to be middle to upper class
Will speak decent English (for Thai people)
Usually more attractive and open to the prospect of 'Meeting'

It's a fun city with endless possibilities to boot. Go to Ayuthaya for a day or check out the Klongs. While Khao Ran Rd is a cesspit, there are some really nice areas surrounding it and some amazing food. You won't run out of things to do, even if you aren't gaming.

I've been in Bangkok for 5 days now and can't say that it's my kind of scene so far. I'm 3/3 for notches the nights I've gone out (without paying a cent) so that isn't an issue but the women don't really do it for me. As great as the attention is, actually having to chase is half of the fun. Too bad there are no decent single white girls to persue.

Oh and the smell of the streets here is unbelievable- definitely put me off eating fish for a while!

Bangkok is not my favorite place to stay, mainly because of smell and traffic. Rent something outside the city center, you'll enjoy it more.

I haven't moved- Will only be in Bangkok until Saturday then moving on to Pattaya, Phangan,, Samui and Phuket with a visit to Phi Phi. So all of Bangkok DOESN'T smell like this? Interesting.

Levels, sports bar on Sukhumvit 11, and one I met with from Thaifriendly. Levels was amazing on a Saturday night by the way.

Anyone know if Q bar is still open? Can't find it for the life of me.

You haven't left Sukhumvit yet so I'm not surprised the girls aren't doing it for you.

It's a recurring theme here that guys come to Bkk for four days, fuck around with low quality girls on Sukhumvit, then complain about low quality.

I know quality spots have been broken down on this forum a hundred times, but guys still refuse to go there. I don't get it.
