School of Athens by Raphael. Great one.

Interesting fact about this painting: Raphael painted himself into it, far right. He's the one looking at the viewer wearing the hat.

Marlon Brando was a liberal headcase but Vito Corleone is pretty timeless in his representation of masculinity. A man who tried to raise his family best he could, fulfilled his destiny, and lived by a strong code of sorts.

How about this one:

Big time meeting going on there.

Tony Montana or Michael Corleone...you pick who that represents.

Vito Corleone is one of my favorite characters in film.

(10-01-2014 01:16 AM)Mage Wrote:  The OP pic is the best.

Masculinity as search for truth in darkness, the power to recognize objective truths and overcome subjective hamster bullshit is a very accurate picture.

Brutal animalistic power like in most other pics is only a superficial understanding of masculinity.
A man is a man because he can somewhat transcend the animalistical nature that all animals and even human females are slaves of. He does so trough selfless study, knowledge and wisdom acquired from other great men.

Here is another good pic, that also shows that besides search for truth and wisdom, masculinity is also about respect and honor - great men learning from another great men:

I disagree.

Not only are the OP's pic and the toga pic not clear examples of masculinity, but regarding the bolded text, I'll suggest that the hamstering here may be in your post.

Every one of those guys in the paintings could be a beta or effeminate.

That lion is NOT a beta or effeminate.

I'll posit that it is you who does not understand what masculinity is.

As an example, an illiterate man who has never left his hometown and works a blue collar job can be a paragon of masculinity.

You are not grasping this in your attempt to elevate the intellectual part of man over the masculine part of man.

The two are distinct, and they are separate.

You're right, the intellectual part is what makes us "man," or "mankind," if you will, but it is NOT what makes us masculine.

Masculinity came before higher level learning, NOT the other way around, as you posit, and this is key. Not only that, masculinity also comes before wisdom. A young man with no wisdom and no education can most definitely still be extremely masculine.

In game forums, this hamster-ism is very common, it seems it's a way to attempt to imply, for example, that a man that has read a lot or is very wise/worldly is more masculine than a man with a deep tone of voice, good height, broad shoulders, and who is looked at as the natural leader of his group by men and as a sex object by women.

This is simply not the case.

Without diminishing the value of being worldly, I'll posit that being worldly/wise and being masculine are NOT the same thing.

Masculinity is primeval, it is instinctual, it requires no wisdom, and no civilization, it only requires a pair of brass balls.

Masculinity is not a force for good or evil, it's a force of nature.
