I haven't posted anything for a long time...but the past month has been the most awesome experience in terms of improving my game and climbing up the quality ladder in Budapest. I will be posting new stories and updates by the end of this month. I love ya all!

That sounds like such a rich and challenging city...between Poland, Serbia and BP the potential is unlimited.
And the best part is they just started a regular train service from Frankfurt to Budapest.

Hungarian would be an interesting language to learn (I know very basic phrases only) and I do have a direct Hungarian ancestor (he was from Bremen really but he carried a Hungarian passport during the days of Horthy's regency and the Kingdom of Hungary) so it would be an interesting way of re-connecting with my supposed origin. Alas, I have promised myself to prioritise my Russian now that I'm confident in French. I will visit as soon as possible though.

beer in stores can be as cheap as 0.35-0.5EUR 0.5l in clubs around 3EUR

I'm not a heavy drinker anymore but still enjoy the odd beer when I'm out.

Beer cans (500ml) at the grocery store can range in price from 119-189HUF, depending on the brand, store you shop at and sales. If memory serves me right, at Lidl I've seen beer on sale as low as 89HUF.

A pint of beer at a nightspot will typically be in the 500-600 range depending on the spot. Buddha and I were at a popular nightspot last night, where I ordered a pint of Hungarian beer for 550HUF (1.80 Euro). That's pretty typical. If you get outside the city centre and hit up a local pub, you can find some good deals. I've had pints for as low as 290HUF (0.94 Euro).

Hungarians are more proud of their wine than their beer. You can get a good bottle for as low as 399HUF.

3 Euro = 917 HUF.

Even at tourist inflated Szimpla a pint of house beer can be had for 590, Dreher is 600.

I don't think I've seen a place with 900HUF beer in my 9 months here. That's pretty steep.

I might go to Budapest in the summer. Is it even worth to start studying their alien language right now? I'm not sure if it would be worth the effort and how much I would gain from a few months of studying. Could I have a conversation with a few months of practice? Would that small amount of knowledge of the language help getting bangs?

Agree with ElJefe1.. most young Hungarians speak English quite well, just knowing basics is enough to serve you and separate you from the hordes that make no attempt.

What really throws me off with the language is the difference in how it's written and pronounced.. hogy vagy? - nagy jó (how are you? - very well/good) i needed Hungarians to tell me how to pronounce this, but other words like Szia (hello and bye) are pronounced as their spelled.

You'll hear baszd meg and mi a fasz everywhere (fuck/fuckoff , what the fuck)

In 2011, the government added passports and (non-voting) citizenship eligibility to those who can demonstrate ancestry from birth by former (enlarged) Hungarian territory.

You need the paper work (birth records of place and descent), and only conversational level-Hungarian to qualify.

Apparently, several hundred thousands of people living in extra-border areas have already done so. I read a London newspaper story, for instance, about man living in Croatia or Serbia, a truck-driver, who then used his new HU passport to work as a trucker in the UK at triple hourly wages of his old rate.

As for Americans and others, the process is fast. (Faster than most government services.) And I'm led to understand that the higher comprehension and speaking levels earlier demanded have slackened, if your ancestry to Hungary is more remote - kinda like the fact that it is a difficult and rarely taught language is acknowledged. And thus lower levels of ability may well be acceptable now.
