I have kept my Town Hall down to 3 and have upgraded nearly everything else as high (4/5) as I could. I will hopefully be looking to get that Clan Castle up in a day or two after all my current upgrades are complete.

Great suggestion, Fisto. I'm having an unexpectedly fun time with this game.

How to kill off the mortars? I have archers and the regular soldiers and I still get my ass kicked no matter where I place them.

Giants target defenses preferentially, and they can also be used as tanks to get the mortar's attention while you drop other troops elsewhere. If you don't have giants yet, you have to find bases where you can drop your troops really close to the mortar because it can't fire at troops right next to it. If I can't get troops to the mortar right away, or I can't do significant damage out of range of the mortar, I skip the base. Not worth losing an army.

In multiplayer be really selective about what bases you attack, because your army isn't going to be well suited to every set of defenses, and in single player you can't do that many maps at lower levels. I got up to M is for Mortar, the first single player map with mortars, and decided to come back when I have at least wall breakers or maybe just dump 12 giants because anything else won't get one star and I'll just waste resources. I'm almost completely upgraded at town hall 3, for reference, with about 3 hours left until town hall 4 is done.

Get on the Lab. Troops that might seem useless at first, become highly effective at the higher levels. For example, Wizards are initially a waste of time at first. Take too long to train, have a high cost, and also take a long time between each 'zap' they attack with, getting killed off easily. At level 5 though, they are dynamite.

The spell factory also becomes essential.

I think I built the lab too early though. The thing is, it costs 25,000 elixir just to build and another 50,000 just to upgrade one kind of troop a single level. Just doesn't seem worth it early in the game where that's going to wipe out your entire reserve.

One question I have is why do on some raids, you'll still get to keep some of the troops you deployed? Yet others I lose every troop, even though a majority of them didn't die in battle.

No you lose ALL the troops you have deployed every time. Even if they do not die in battle. I think you might have some extra troops training in your barracks when you go on a raid, which you might have mistaken for surviving troops.

I play Star Wars Commander, it is almost the same as Clash of Clans but ala Star Wars you have to chose if you are the empire or the rebel, you can have spaceship such as the x-wing which it is quite cool. I recommend it if you like Clash of Clan.

Anyway, I started Clash of Clan after reading this thread (thanks Fisto), I for the moment focus on develop my ressources and farming, I'll join the clan as soon as my Clan Castle is repaired.

The hard part about getting the lab is increasing storage size; by the time you have the 25000+ storage capacity it should be easy to raid for 25000 elixir.
