this happened to me about 18 yrs ago. was in a bar in calgary called the back alley.

within 5 minutes of me first getting there, grabbing a drink and talking to a couple girls i got hit full force in the back of the head and next thing i knew i was eating floor. it sucked. got up dazed to see my friends into it with a couple other guys i had never seen before and the club employees all over every one of them. everyone got forcibly removed but me. the girls left at the same time, clearly they were with the guys who had hit me. i was made to fill out an "incident report", which was way fun when i was in the shape i was.

that is the only time something like that has ever happened to me. so i think the odds of a repeat for the op are rather low.

also, could be my own fault for trying to mack on girls in a place i knew was a little bit rougher...

Yes, and the next day or so I was quite angry and wished I could have beaten the shit out of that guy. I had no anger towards the whore because it would be the same as getting angry at a puppy for pissing on the rug. It's not possible to file a charge in a bar scene unless a guy hit a woman or you are severely wounded. Police will look at both of you as two drunk dudes. I punched this guy first who was harassing me. Of course bouncers came and I voluntarily walked out of there. You can take advantage of that. In your situation, you were just unlucky. By the way, Was she kind of trashy girl?

Something very similar happened to me this winter in Poland. I was making out with a girl when I got sucker punched by her ex bf. He threw a decent shot but he didn't knock me down. I was very drunk but I started throwing some jabs and also moved in a circle avoiding his punches. The club was half empty and the bouncers grabbed us and we got kicked out (they were very gentle to my surprise).

Once outside the dude seemed surprised that I was fighting back and he even did a lame attempt to apologize but I was pissed off. He was slightly smaller than me and I ended up kicking his ass (kinda literaly) after he tried to do a roundhouse kick to the body that I countered with a low kick (I used to train kickboxing and boxing). He fell to the ground and I threw a few shots until her ex gf and this obese girl stepped in to defend him.

I was very drunk and my form was probably quite bad (I haven't trained in a long time) but I still managed to fight back without eating any other punches. In the end I just got a slight black eye that lasted 1 week from the single punch that he landed while he left home with his face bruised.

It's the only fight I've had because of a girl. Other than that I've had times where I had to stand up for myself when guys wanted to give me shit etc but fights are very rare, I wouldn't worry much about it. Personally I think every man should at least know how to throw a decent punch, you never know when shit may hit the fan also boxing is a great workout and will boost your confidence.

The chances of getting killed from a punch are very low although you should still avoid fighting if possible of course.

You seem very concerned, so I would advice you to take boxing or a martial art for some time. Just knowing how to throw a punch already puts you above 75% of men out there. On top of that avoid trashy venues where fights are common and don't mess with the wrong guys. Again, fights shouldn't happen frequently, it was probably just bad luck.

I don't want to come off as an expert, I'm sure other guys in the forum know more than I do.

I did kickboxing for two years and boxing for 6 months. I learned way more and improved a lot my technique during the 6 months that I took boxing. Even though I already had some experience, the trainers in real, oldschool boxing gyms will focus 10x times more on any minor details of your technique.

If you're short and muscular, watch how Tyson used to fight. He would destroy guys 3-6 inches taller than him through speed, anticipation and power. Boxing isn't exactly "self defence" although for example, learning the footwork will make you less likely to trip down on a fight. Most brawls you see on youtube, worldstar etc where the guy falls to the ground are because he trips over due to bad footwork instead of actually receiving a solid punch.

This shit is way more intense in Vietnam and some parts of China. When I was back home during the summer there was this news all over the place of a guy getting his arm chopped off by a machete wielding gang because he hit on one of their girls.

In Asia police is corrupted and justice is handled a lot by vigilantes. Street violence and gang wars are common.

My cousin did time once for some violent shit. He s one scary motherfucker and very good with nunchakus. He s all retired from that stuff now. When I was asking him about fighting and stuff he just shut me off "Dont you ever get into a street fight. Its not like in movies or shit. Rules of Engagement;

1. Follow Christian McQueen's advice and roll with a wing man to any new place and get it on lockdown... I always have some good new cigars and offer the lead bouncer and the owner's a really good cigar ... my local club is on lockdown this way and the owner even gives me drink tokens (poker Chips with the clubs logo on them) to me out of the clear blue for free drinks now and then. Very kool when lockdown works right - read CM's posts on lockdown techniques.

2. Don't get shitefaced on unknown territory... blind drunk and bad results go hand in hand... if you are tipsy on a lockdowned locale at least the bouncer and owner will look out for you unless you make real trouble for them.

3. In a new place NEVER leave your back exposed includes new clubs you are on a recon run in and then also local pubs and bars... take a seat near the wall near to your back and with a view of the entrance... at least then no one can sneak up and sucker you.

4. If you have to hang at a local's "towney" bar get the bartender on lockdown with a ridiculous large tip (10 bucks on one beer or twenty bucks at the end of the night and ask where the best after hours action is (women wise).

5. In a dodgey Boston area strip club I put a folded stack of 100 "tickets" ($1 bills) on the Pole dancer drinks bar and bought a round for the guys next to me - one of the guys let me know one of the other drunks wanted to steal my stack - a C-note is nothing to me and a round of drinks made allies who gave me a heads up to potential trouble.

6. In the USA I have a permit to carry a firearm and so do a lot of other men, I am former military and trained in all forms of lethal force hand to hand, firearms and explosives - rule is avoid putting yourself into situations where you might need to use lethal force - unless you have overwhelming force with you - that said in a civilian venue piss the wrong local off who is carrying and it can be a lethal shot to your temple - this actually happened to a bouncer in Boston I knew - he threw an ex-con out of his club who was grabbing and twisting the strippers by their nipples - and when the ex-con saw him in another place he calmly walked up and blew the guys temple and brains out and told every one else there that if they said anything they would be next. Not a good idea to put yourself unwittingly in a life and death situation. When the police came nobody saw anything and most left quietly before the police came and did not return for a long time.

Bottom line it is always Alpha to recon a new place and get it on lockdown first then begin to scoop chicks - it is beta to get loaded and scoop first and then just get your brains bashed in.
