Is Everybody Single? More Than Half the U.S. Now, Up From 37% in '76

Single Americans make up more than half of the adult population for the first time since the government began compiling such statistics in 1976.

Some 124.6 million Americans were single in August, 50.2 percent of those who were 16 years or older, according to data used by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in its monthly job-market report. That percentage had been hovering just below 50 percent since about the beginning of 2013 before edging above it in July and August. In 1976, it was 37.4 percent and has been trending upward since.

In a report to clients entitled “Selfies,” economist Edward Yardeni flagged the increase in the proportion of singles to more than 50 percent, calling it “remarkable.” The president of Yardeni Research Inc. in New York said the rise has “implications for our economy, society and politics.”

I think it goes both ways. The guys that girls want to marry dont want them, and those girls don't want to marry the other guys who do want to marry them.

Damn. I mean I know we're not supposed to just make single word posts, but damn.

Look at this graph from the article: the trend's been going up for 35 years and it shows no signs of stopping.


A lot of this is going to be widows, divorcees, and 16 year old kids, so the statistic isn't quite as amazing as it seems at first glance. But in another 10 years, marriage might be the exception rather than the rule.

Have to agree with you, if you're saying these comments show a really bad attitude toward women. I found these comments so alarming I shared the article on Facebook and posted this comment: I believe men are better people when married to a good woman. So I find marriage seemingly going out of fashion alarming. Even worse, however, are the comments below this article. So many of the comments see women as predators, as tricksters who beguile us then immediately start planning the divorce, their goal all along to steal a man's wealth. I cannot imagine living or thinking this way. Is this normal now, or are the comments merely reflective of embittered guys who lost at love?

Take a long hard look at the typical wife of your average American baby boomer.

Look at her man like face, her wispy female mustache, her flabby upper arms, her thick calves, her husky voice, and her piss poor entitled demeanor.

Ask yourself.. do you really want any part of that trainwreck when you're in your 60's and just want peace and quiet.

How does fucking (if you're "lucky") and waking up next to something like that benefit you in any way.

The answer is, it doesn't. Most boomers are just miserable fucks and are trying to rope you into their world otherwise they feel as if they suffered for nothing.

Marriage is, simply put, a bad deal for men. Diamonds may be a woman's best friend, but they are a man's worst enemy.

The strategy of waiting for a girl to ask for commitment first is a huge war of attrition even compared to 2011 in my experience.

A large portion of attractive 20s girls flaunt almost with no shame being somewhat socially awkward and having a very busy schedule as if that's a good thing.

Serious boyfriend is not in the top 10 priority list.

Australia passed a similar mark about 5-6 years ago. Much was written and talked about on our MSM. In the end, everyone concluded that it's the fault of men, and now I think we've collectively lost interest in the topic.

Since many states dumped their common-law marriage laws in the 2000's, co-habitation doesn't lead to a "legal marriage" in more and more states, so there's one less reason that leads to marriage.

I'd also throw out for consideration the impact of the expanded US credit market and improved collections, I've heard of cases where people don't want to get married because one partner has bad credit, and the other partner doesn't want to get hit with the liability. I doubt there's anyway to track that in studies, but I have heard of that being an issue.

In my experience, as a guy in his late 30s, ALL of guy my friends who wanted to get married are married. Some are on their second marriage.

I have a few single guy friends in my age range. One is a few years older and gets younger women non stop. One has a 26 y/o GF. A few others do very well financially and have a girl here and there and don't want to commit. Only one we never see with a woman, but we strongly suspect he's gay. He does very well for himself and lives a good life.

On the other hand, I know quite a few single women in my age range and they fit into two categories:

1) The former hottie who can't trade on her looks anymore.
2) The dumpy semi fattie who thinks her other qualities make her hot.

Unlike the guys I know, these women get NO attention from the opposite sex. The women of category one know they should've settled down long ago and cling to the notion that perhaps one desirable male will see them for what they once were. The women from category two misinterpret any communication with a man as flirting and use that as hope they will meet their prince charming since they have been told they were beautiful their whole lives. I've seen this played out time and again through coworkers and old acquaintances from HS through the present.

I do agree it could get worse. When I was in my 20s, there were women we'd bang but the idea of marriage wasn't far from their thoughts. There were even younger women who weren't slutting it up and actually looking for a husband. Now it seems like these younger women think the party will last forever. Mother nature and the wall are undefeated.
