Interested to know where the 'average' man stands on this (although perhaps RVF is not the place to ask?).

I raise it because frankly I hate it when girls shave their pussy. Mainly because they rarely shave it consistently daily. Smooth all the way. Very neatly trimmed is acceptable as well, although I definitely prefer smooth. I don't want any arm pit hair, why would I want any bush?
