Have only watched a trailer or two and it seemed like it was hinting that "communism is bad," but then I saw some super commie news rag had a full positive review about it (theatlantic) and now I assume it's cleverly pro-socialism wrapped in disguise. Any ideas on this, as I don't want to waste money on something I'll hate.

I watched the whole movie and at the end I realized that I had read the book in middle school.

It was your basic feel good movie. People raised in someones utopia. It is set in a world without memories where the people take drugs to suppress human nature. Nobody has sex or gets married and love doesn't exist.. Then this guy breaks the mold and goes on a mission to bring memories and emotion to his community blah blah blah.

I haven't seen the movie, but its based on a book that was published in 1993. I read the book, and it sounds like many significant changes have been made. My suggestion is that you read the book. The author is Lois Lowry.

The Giver series has four books in it.

The man himself is played by Jeff Bridges so I figure it should be a good movie. I doubt it is very faithful to the source material.

No, there's no series. It's a standalone classic.

They pushed that book very hard in the 90s, I'm actually surprised it took so long to get the movie treatment. I thought the book was pushing the boundaries even back then, since a large part of the central premise of the book is supporting state-sponsored euthanasia.

I think a major reason it's getting produced now is that many of the more marginal movie options are getting filmed now in Hollywood since the capital markets have "un-frozen" in the years since 2008.

I was under the impression the Bill Clinton era of the 90s was trying to brainwash all the kids (many of you on here probably grew up at that time, I was already young adult) about excessive multi-cultism and equality. I'm under the impression the movie is going to be another typical Hollywood brainwashing, but I really don't know.
