Came so damn close to setting a PR on strict overhead press today. Previous was 195 and had 200 up to the middle of the forehead today but locked out and couldn't push it any further. Tried another attempt and only made it to the nose after that. I'll get you next time!

^ Very impressive.

How much do you weigh?
realologist 路 2016-04-28 05:07:00 路 #2203
220-225

My goal is to get it to bodyweight
cubanlinx 路 2016-04-28 08:14:00 路 #2204
Are smaller people more "relatively" strong? I weigh 74kg, and can OHP 85kg for my 1 rep max.
I'm 1.5 years into training.
Kieran 路 2016-04-28 09:56:00 路 #2205
Is that a strict standing overhead press? If so that's a pretty impressive lift for 18 months training.
Anabasis to Desta 路 2016-04-28 10:35:00 路 #2206
Cubanlinx is that a strict OHP?

That would put you in the "Advanced" category according to Strength Standards and makes you stronger than 82% of male lifters after just 1.5 years of lifting. So pretty much stronger than 99% of the general male population.

I'd say there is something to it, but I'm pretty small too so of course I'm going to brag Tongue

Have a look at this little North Korean guy lifting a staggering 173 kg.

Had a hand placement epiphany while doing a C&J complex today. I used to widen my grip in the front rack, then drive into the jerk. I could never find the right balance and I struggled to put up 115. Today I widened my grip after the jerk drive and was able to hit 135 after a few tries. Pretty stoked to run with this.

Yeah man. A strict OHP.

I bench 115kg. This was 2 months ago. I substituted dumbell presses, so it's probably lower now.
Squat-147.5kg (our gym has those little 1.25 kg plates)
Deadlift- 190kg

I've never trained for strength. I'm a strict bodybuilding guy. But I daresay I have some amount of grit (and Ego, god bless that, adds inches to my height even) which allows me to push through PRs.
On a side note, I don't really like squatting. I've recently started squatting twice a week, and it seems to be helping everywhere. So I'll keep doing it. If I had a choice tho.......
Kieran 路 2016-04-29 03:16:00 路 #2210
You're a very good over head presser then. I can bench 112.5 kg for a single at 70 kg BW, but my best ever strict over head press was 72.5 kg, and that was an absolute grinder of a rep, and it took me a lot longer than 18 months to get there.

All this OHP talk is stressing me. Before my shoulder injury I was closing in on 185 for 3 reps at 170, but apparently it wasn't meant to happen. I wanted to hit 225 for 5 before senior year, it was easily my best lift. To give some perspective, my 3 rep bench max was only 235, so its pretty unproportional, but bitches love capped veiny delts
johnfortunebg 路 2016-05-01 13:11:00 路 #2212
I'm starting a 3-month long slow cutting tomorrow. Goal is to lose between 5 and 6 kilograms while maintaining all my current lifting weight and volume.

Wish me minimal muscle loss.
RexImperator 路 2016-05-01 16:02:00 路 #2213
You might want to maintain intensity but drop volume.

According to Rippetoe, the Press usually tracks your Bench by about 0.7. I've found this to be roughly true. To OHP 225 you should have a BP around 320.

Not necessarily. Overhead pressing often has little relation to bench pressing. Soviet sports scientists did a fair bit of research into the question and found that many lifters see no relationship.

Case in point, Vasily Alekseyev pressed about 520. He could only bench press around the same.

The bench press became an assistance exercise for the overhead press due to advances in press technique.

Benching has no relationship to the OHP in that most people with big benches are terrible at OHP.

However, people with great OHP strength invariably put up solid numbers in the bench.

Finally have my working weights solidly where I like them with some extra buffer, now then to lose some of the fat that came along. I was without a kitchen for January and consequently ate like shit and it's been showing for the past few months, I'll get rid of the small layer I acquired. My midsection did not become smooth (which would have been unacceptable), but there is less definition and it's softer overall. I have some dated pictures with (morning) weight and a decent set of guidelines for diet and exercise. Also, goals below:

1) Lose 5 kg of mostly fat. Can't measure this perfectly as I do not have a BF% meter, so I have to go with a combo of the scale and mirror.

2) Not losing strength below a baseline of 115x3 bench, 140x3 squat, 200x3 deadlift in kilograms. I currently do a bit more in them except the squat which is lagging badly for some reason, so on that one I might have to be flexible and go to 130 instead. Or not, I think it's lagging because of shite quad strength and the front squats I added seem to be helping.

For exercise:

1) Keep the routine as is, but note that progress in working weight is unlikely to happen except perhaps in front squats and push press since I added those only very recently. On non-lifting days, add 30 mins of hard swimming in the mornings to the routine.

M:

2x3 deadlifts
3x5 front squats
3x5 push press
3xF V-ups

W & F

3x3-5 bench
3x3-5 back squats
3xF chinups
3xF V-ups

Will see how this goes. I definitely need to get rid of the softness, it shows in my face and midsection way too much.

gentlemen,
recently i was in a motorcycle accident, which fucked a bit my right knee, lower back and a bit of the neck. I am still whole and nothing seems to be broken or out of place, but I don't want to stress the body with unnecessary exercises.

My question to you is:
What other type of exercise can I do? I can only think of taking swimming and some sort of TRX training/Elastics

Did you go to a doctor?

Even apparently minor injuries can become very serious after healing. For instance I saw a guy dislocate his shoulder and demand it be popped back in, apparently a small fragment of born was shorn from the shoulder and fused right into the socket. Three or four surgeries later and the fragment removed and he's still kind of fucked up.

@Wreckingball

Swimming sounds good! If you have pain I'd recommend foam rolling.
But go to a doctor first and maybe get some X-Rays.
It's very easy to damage some of the delicate structures in the knee and neck.

Anyway, I caught a cold and can't lift right now. It sucks, I really wanna go. Have to make sure I don't go too early and risk making it worse or getting myocarditis or some shit like that.
Do some squats for me guys!

Went to the Brazilian BJJ National Championship this weekend and goddamn there's some big, strong guys out there.

You look at guys like Fabio Gurgel and Leandro Lo in pictures and sure, they look fit.

In real life these guys are so thick it's ridiculous.

Also, not a lot of estrogen in the air - literally every guy looked like an actual man, which is kind of rare to see nowadays. I mean zero pajama boys there. Just huge necks, brows, hands, chins, a plethora of busted ears in every shape or form. I'm 6'0'' 177lbs and felt like such a pussy.

There's certainly a lot of PEDs going on amongst pros/semi-pros but it's also interesting to see how some people are just cut from a different cloth genetically. I'd see 16 year olds with that ripped mesomorph body type and just shake my head.

I realize this post may sound a little Gay but this shit got me pumped.

Ah yes, good comment.

Generally, I would agree. John Davis clean and pressed 375 in the 1940s. He benched well over 400. There are exceptions, of course.

Damn, that's awesome!

How long are your arms? If you have short arms I could see that working. I think short limbs are super vital for getting to the pinnacles of strength.

A lot of the best squatters are like 5'6 Eastern Europeans guys with long torsos and short legs.

The best deadlifter that I know of is Lamar Gant. He has like 4xBW deadlift but he's super short with a small torso so the weight doesn't really have to travel much.

Not sure about bench press, but the best benchers I've seen are always guys with short, crocodile arms.
cubanlinx 路 2016-05-02 22:42:00 路 #2225
@Fortis, I always thought I had monkey arms Banana
But, for real my arms look proportionate to my torso. I'm 5'7.
Guys with long arms are pretty good at deadlifts. Shorter armed guys are good benchers. So you're pretty much accurate with your post.
