I don't think we ever see Tony getting shot? But yeah if Paulie found out about his prostate cancer at 3pm, that is no coincidence. I don't really get what the point of that is by David Chase, that psychics have real power, or what?

I guess maybe Hesh thought tony was going to kill him instead of repaying the loan, ordered a hit on Tony and never called it off even after Tony paid the money back?

Or maybe someone from New York? Who else was left besides Junior that would even try it?

Eugene and Patsy had legitimate grudges against Tony, and there's speculation that Eugene might have had Tony clipped for not letting him retire to Florida.

Maybe I am seeing what I want to see but I think it was Butchie. The whole of the second part of season six, they show how much Butchie hates Tony. When they are in the warehouse having a sit down when Butchie agrees to betray Phil, there is a moment Butchie moves his head and CAT in yellow on a truck is at the back. Besides if Butchie can betray his own boss what stops him from turning on Tony. It was shown before that Patsy doesnt have the balls to take out Tony. Why would Patsy wait four seasons to kill Tony? Especially when their kids are going to get married.

3 and 7 are considered holy numbers. 3 being the trinity. So it makes sense in a show with good doses of Catholic guilt that Chase would place significance on the number 3. I'm not sure it is anything more specific than that; just a device to tie things together in a pleasing way.

I think things like the psychic and the Russian disappearing in the woods are a way to open the expanse of the world beyond the borders of the story we get to see, and just drop a little paranoia and superstition in there. Paranoia and superstition being a major part of the Italian mob psyche.

Bumping this thread. Been a while since I have rewatched the Sopranos. There are always things I miss. At Johnny Sacs daughters wedding he tells Tony Rusty is a cancer he cant let spread. It foreshadowed his eventual fate.

Going to binge watch it again this weekend.

I watched it through more than a few times, for me Little Carmine was the mastermind of the show. Everyone died and he inherited it all by taking a back seat after his war with Johnny Sack. He also ingratiated himself to all sides while being an agitator from the sidelines.

Case in point, skip to 2 mins when he mentions Phils brother, this conversation would eventually lead to Phil getting whacked

The Sopranos is the high water mark of modern western entertainment.

Regarding a lot of the above -- Tony's death?!, 3 o'clock, what happened to the Russian, etc.

The really powerful elements of art come from letting it hang. As in things that just hang in the air and are not concrete and have no point or no real clear meaning.

You imbue them with meaning from your own perspective. Which is not to say you are an integral part of the art. Some leftists believe that audiences give art its meaning, which must be bullshit because obviously the artist acted of his own volition.

But a great artist leaves room for the audience to slip itself into the art, and get new insight into a familiar perspective.

So much of Sopranos was just "letting in hang".

In fact, the whole Pine Barrens episode (the Russian in the woods) was letting it hang. And that's what made it one of the best.

As good as Terence Winter is (and he's damn good), you can see why Boardwalk Empire (a show I love) will always be inferior to Sopranos.

Apparently he pleaded with David Chase to conclude the Russian story before the series ended, but Chase was not interested because it had served its purpose.

Winter wants to tie every plot point up.

Chase understands that life doesn't tie almost anything up, and there is power and profundity in that (if orchestrated with a firm hand).

Just started a re-watch around the time this thread got bumped.

Amazing how much "foreshadowing" you notice when re-re-re-re-re-re-watching.

I almost always re-watch it with a girlfriend; half the experience now is experiencing how she will experience it. (This has been discussed way upthread). It's a good tool to gauge her reactions, have her see female "good" and "bad" behavior, various male archetypes, etc. Great fun.
