I looked into the symbolism of the Sopranos in regards to the Divine Comedy and surely there seems to be a bunch. One forum talkes extensively about the number 9 in both. Along with the 9 circles of Hell and the other references of 9, the 7 deadly sins are cleansed in Hell. Apparently (I need to rewatch) Tony wakes up frequently at 9:07 and uncle Junior falls down "9 no 7 steps" at the Courthouse. And of course Furio gives "Maedo " a copy of the Divine Comedy as a gift.

The transformation of Uncle Junior from a wily, witty and cunning mobster to a demented old man was one of the saddest things on the show. Junior season 1-5 cracked me up constantly.

And the final conversation between him and Tony:

Tony: You don't know who I am, do ya?... You remember Johnny? Johnny Boy, your kid brother?... This thing of ours?

Junior: I was involved in that?

Tony: Yeah. You and my Dad. You two ran North Jersey.

Junior: We did?

Tony: Yeah.

Junior: Hm. Well, that's nice.

I watched the show when it was on the air but never caught all the tiny little details and subtleties. It took me another complete re-watch to absorb everything. Now one of my favorite pastimes is surfing through random Sopranos clips on Youtube while eating pasta.

I dont know many shows that are as timeless as the Sopranos. Nowadays you forget about the show after turning off the tv.
Maybe its the ambiguous ending that makes the show eternal.

These two come to mind.

I grew up in a very working class suburban type family and watching how they all interact with each other does very much remind me of how my extended family interacts.

It's amazing Tony, caught up in his own psychological mess, never realises how brilliant a strategist he is. He is the antithesis of Michael Corleone but no less brilliant.

Most people would consider me a bit of a movie snob, so they always do a double take when I say, pound for pound, if you take all the episodes as a whole, the Sopranos is the absolute height of modern art.

Just took my girl through it, my fourth time in all. Just gets better.

Have watched 3-4 times, huge fan, etc.

Have any of you gotten to the point where, when picking an episode to watch at random, you see the two sentence description, instantly remember most of the plot of the episode, and think "ehhh I already know what happens, I've seen this so many times"?

Then you watch it anyway and realize the experience of watching is far more satisfying than merely hitting plot checkpoints, twists and suspense and all?

Even when they sort of recycled plot lines it was still handled beautifully. The pattern of 'dangerous new character from the old days we haven't seen gets outta jail/comes back and then becomes a problem to be dealt with'(Richie/Ralph/Buscemi/etc).
When Robert Loggia died last year I went and rewatched his stint. Great twist how instead of whacking him they just trick his greedy ass into getting busted and sent right back to jail.

Buscemi did fuck up an otherwise great season 5. I wish they could have kept Ralph Cifaretto alive for one more season.

Like many other forum members Tony's alpha male traits are much more apparent to me after taking the red pill. I remember how dis-believable Tony's relationship with that Russian minx was in the first couple seasons. Now it makes total sense.

Junior Soprano singing core 'ngrato was the highlight of the series for me. It felt the entire season built up to that poignant moment.

Fantastic scene. It really shows the difference between the older generation - Proud Italian Americans embracing an old tradition - and the young generation.. self hating Italians. Especially Meadow... a girl brainwashed by the leftist education system. Taught to hate everything white, everything Italian.

A buddy of mine and I are big fans of the Sopranos, and we still talk like Tony sometimes as a goof. For example, I was seeing a girl who was a vegetarian and I told my buddy "she's one of the those - what the fuck they call it when they don't eat meat - she's a veterinarian."

Great show. Only problem was all the scenes w/ Tony's immediate family. Excruciating. The show would have been better served if limited to 43 minutes. Also, some of the acting is suspect. Obviously not Gandolfini. An all time great. I rate The Sopranos behind Breaking Bad and Mad Men. I haven't watched the Wire.

Did anybody notice the waitress during the last scene. There is a shot of Tony with Carmela and AJ sitting, just before Meadow enters Holstens. The waitress points her pencil to the side of her head. Maybe I am over reaching, but that points to Tony getting shot.

Secondly, the last thing we see is Tonys headshot. Get it? Head shot?

Sopranos was the TV -series which had a huge impact on me during my early teens. It had a huge effect in molding the way I view the world, mainly that in the end, you can only count on yourself when SHTF (And that people don't really care for your sins as long as you give them a way to look the other way. We're in a constant conflict between our real selves and our ideal selves).

Back then I watched it for all the gangster -stuff but after watching the first season of True Detective I grew an appreciation for philosophical commentary and watched the Sopranos again. That series works on so many levels, every time you watch it you gain something new from it.

I've seen it about four times now too. I agree with it being at the peak of modern art. I think Tony Soprano is one of the best characters I've ever experienced, and that's through a shit-ton of movies, tv shows, and books. It helps that you have 70 hours of episode, with Tony being in at least 55 of them, maybe more.

I was actually watching old episode scenes recently on youtube. I was thinking about the time Paulie goes to see the psychic.





Do you guys think it was just a good cold reading? The Sonny thing could be luck. He says "son" at first and switches to "sonny" after Paulie says no. It makes sense that a guy that looks like him would know at least one sonny I guess. Then he just plays off of Paulies fear.

Does 3 o'clock ever come into play? I think Tony gets wacked at the end, but that was nighttime. Who could have got killed at 3pm? Or did it mean nothing?

There is a lot of spiritual or supernatural shit in the show. Like when they see religious visions or visions of dead people. The dreams too. I guess it makes sense, these guys would be under an insane amount of stress. This scene could just be Paulie overreacting to some lucky guesses.

I was too young to ever watch the Sopranos when during the initial serial run, but this thread along with a view of the Godfather movie's the past week motivated me to download the first two episodes. I'll come back tomorrow with my thoughts.
