Louisiana is one of those few places in America where you should just be yourself and not make stuff complicated. If anyone has ever spent time in Shreveport and Alexandria than that person would KNOW that the study's author was smoking crack when he was number-crunching all that data to say they're in the top 5happiest cities in the US. Those have got to be in the top 5 biggest shitholes in the country up there with Lowell, MA and a few other choice places. These places are trashy subdivisions housing everyone who works in the oil & gas and have huge drug problems due to the 2 wk on-2wk off work/home schedule of everyone working on the rigs.

NOLA did NOT make the list of happiest place for the posters above who like NOLA, which IS a cool palce. NOLA was nowhere near the top choices for happiest places (#95) - it was all the podunk towns that were in top 5.

But yes as others have said, Louisianians are on the whole simple, slow & content with hunting/fishing rather than aspiring for more. To an extent, ignorance is bliss. If that fits you, perfect. I have a feeling most men on this board are go-getters, love to travel extensively & seek to improve their lifestyle through new, exciting experiences & gaining wealth. That personality would not be happy in the Happiest Louisiana states.

As usual, the Ivory towers are completely out of touch with reality.

I think that a big part of it comes down to the fact that Louisiana is about as full of real rednecks as any place in the US. And rednecks tend to be some of the happiest people in the world if you leave them alone.

This reminded me of a truly great passage by the Indian(!) writer V. S. Naipaul about rednecks, as told to him in his travels by a man named Campbell. It was a little too long to post here, so I posted it in a separate new thread:

I will read it. But I'll tell you I start bouncing up in down in my seat like a little kid when I see "sportsmans paradise" coming down the highway.
