The Spanish conquest destroyed the old religion, but folkways die hard. I've noticed that Mexicans have a fatalism and morbidity not possessed by other countries of the Americas.

Pre-Columbian religion is certainly a factor in my view, but let's not forget that Catholicism also possesses its own fascination with death...the crucifixion is essentially a blood sacrifice, literally (through transubstantiation) reenacted every week at mass. The fatalist tendencies in both spiritual sources, I think, fused with and complimented one another to influence Mexican culture.

On a more positive note a natural entry barrier is not a bad thing. The reputation for violence and danger repels a lot of retards such as hippie backpackers, hipsters, SWPL package family vacation types, old sex tourists, etc.. When these people go to Mexico they tend to cluster up at the resort destinations.


If you look at countries (Thailand) where it's inundated with these people it makes the overall environment crappier. It also tends to have a negative effect on the locals by importing degenerate aspects of American culture and also effects their perception of foreigners.

While this guy's death is definitely sad and not to be made light of, I don't find others being afraid of travel as sad. More Americans being afraid of Mexico would make me want to go there more.

Yeah, this is true. It is better Americans are afraid so the annoying ones don't go abroad. But overall, I think it would be better if American society did not have such an imbred fear against the outside world. For instance, Americans would have a much more balanced view of international relations if they didn't think that the whole world is just some violent anti-American hell hole. America would definitely fight less wars if the population was not so afraid of the outside world (i.e. they would not trust politicians when they make up BS excuses for invading XYZ country).
