What are some of the better Brazilian cities to experience carnaval? I searched some threads a bit, and saw that people were trashing bahia for low quality girls.

I'm more concerned with the experience as a whole, but hot girls are always a plus..

I had an amazing time in Recife and Olinda. It's unbelievably humid, and quite hot, but who cares when you're tanked from 11AM onwards.

Making out with random chicks is easy. You just point and say "Beijos?". Fucking the quality girls a different story that I cannot help you with.

Also did Recife carnaval some time ago.

Had a great time but just be aware the city is rather rough. Saw some nasty fights break out during my stay.

Very easy to meet girls. Couldn't come close to meeting all the girls we got numbers from. Went with 2 others and all of us got flags.

When I did the Recife / Olinda carnaval I saw a shoot out between two drug dealers.

They were working the same street corner, selling drugs and drinking beer all day. They finally got so drunk and pissed off with each other they pulled out guns and started shooting.

Everybody ran screaming. One of them was later seen being dragged down the street with his hand hanging off because he was shot in the wrist.

What fights did you see?

Salvador is famous for the more 'original' street carnaval. You buy a T-shirt and are able to walk with the blocos. The idea behind the Salvador carnaval is to kiss as many girls (or men in their case) as possible. The carnaval in Rio gives something for everyone. The more middle to upper-class will most of the time travel or go to the nightclubs. They stay far away from actual carnaval parades (or spend time in the VIP boxes). They can however be found at the evening balls. The poor- to (lower) middle class will be in on of the many many street blocos or participating in Sambodromo. I like it more then the Salvador carnaval because of the availability of blondes, brunettes, mixed and black. No worries for shootings by the way. Just dress simple (like everywhere else in Brazil) and you'll be fine.

Ps Fernando de Noronha is a group of Island. Very beautiful but noting to do without a girl from the mainland. They have about 3000 inhabitants ...

Salvador - Undoubtedly the best city for Carnival in Brazil. This cannot be beat. Ask your average Brazilian.

Lumiere..the fights were often between groups of young guys maybe teenagers...
this was often in front of the military police who were waiting for the next one to break up...
Didn't see anything to match your story.

Would often find myself wandering down alleys with sketchy characters checking us out.

Great trip but wouldn't do it again. Think there's a good chance of being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Was in floripa during 'carnaval' but let's just say it's slightly watered down...

I was in Salvador the week before Carnaval so I got to see all of the troupe's warmup parties which they basically use as reversal for caranval.

Fun - but Salvador is also an extremely dangerous city.

I've been to to Recife/Olinda Carnival and Rip Carnival...Refice Olinda is a bit more gritty but tons of fun and a bit more sluttier If you get my drift. Rio is more classy overall and not as grimey. I heard Salvador is the perfect mix and Floripa more upscale.

I just finished my S. America trip off with the Rio Carnival and it was an epic week. Didn't bother with the Sambadrome parade, expensive and heard mixed reports so just checked out the blockos and street parades then Lapa at night. Lots of kissing, number swapping and then finally getting sex on my final night in a cheap seedy run down love motel. The funny thing is i was so drunk I went to sit down on a wall as I couldn't stand up anymore, there was a girl there who didnt speak a word of English, I chatted in my almost non existant Portugese and basic Spanish and 5 mins later was off to a motel. Was the worst effort of my life when we got to the motel as I was half asleep and so drunk that I couldn't even be bothered. Memorable last night either way.

It kind of depend what kind of carneval you want - if you want an animated colorfull carneval where you are among people - the Olinda is a good choice, Salvador could be an other - it is however very organised in bloqos (groups) and you only dance around in your bloq wearing the colors/dress of your group. I have never been to carneval in Rio - but is seems very spetacular, but you are more of a visitor to the display of amazing costumes. Then of course there ar places around Rio with parties.

An other option is to go eg. to a small carneval in a smaller and less known city on eg the costline with trio electricos (bands on trucks) and less people - but not nescessarily less action. Once I went to one like that in Espirito Santo and it was real fun too.
