It seems like a lot of guys in the manosphere recommend watching TV and movies starring Sean Connery, Cary Grant, John Wayne, Don Draper and the likes. I'll throw in some other characters: Kenny Powers, Archer,...

Apparently their alpha-ness will rub off on you.

I think there's some truth to it since there are few good role models any more.

There is some truth to it but it's always better to try to emulate actual historical figures. Fiction is always going to be exaggerated.

If you're watching to see body language and facial expressions, or to hear vocal inflection and verbal delivery, then yeah there's something to be gained if you are looking for something to draw on in your own interactions.

If you think you're just going to magically get better with women by watching Goldfinger ten times, then you're in for some disappointment.

I think we intentionally and also unintentionally mimic others whether it be personal influences or those in media with enough exposure those avenues.

This would have to be a recent figure, right? There's an assload of Ronald Reagan footage out there.

Watching actors act is a great way to learn about body language and how much you can communicate outside of what you say.

As for trying to glean some game from male/female interactions that were written by some introvert who's idealizing the world in some respect - NO.

^ I don't know. Good post, and I agree with you about the body language being more valuable, but I think it's a mistake to assume all screenwriters are clueless introverts.

You've got plenty of players online putting in the time and effort to create websites, information products, and seminars. These things probably take about the same amount of alone time as does making a movie script.

I just got done reading a book about the daily habits of different writers and artists throughout history - some of them had huge sexual appetites and were legendary for their sexual conquests. A lot of them were also extremely social and spent as much time on the town as they did hiding in their rooms (that kind of describes my life - one extreme or the other at all times).

You get people from all walks of life locking themselves up to create, and it's not completely unrealistic to imagine someone who creates a movie plot might understand male/female interactions. The problem for guys without game would be recognizing legitimate insights from hype though. Your efforts would definitely be better exerted elsewhere but you may be generalizing a bit here.

It should be noted that the creator of Archer got the idea for the character while sitting in a cafe wishing he could approach the hot women around him.

Archer is the creation he wished he was, and as I recall he actually writes ALL of the dialogue for the show.

I take that to just reinforce a belief I have always had; All guys innately know how to be a man and pick up women. It's anxieties and self doubt that hold many men back.

Taking it one step further, I like to take fashion cues from characters and implement it into my own style.

This is a look I've been rocking intermittently lately - slim fit light blue shirt with white collar/cuffs, combined with a red tie (I wear a red and white striped tie).

I had to laugh when my boss commented that I looked smooth.

   

Hair is very much in the Don Draper style.
