Both Holmes and Balwani, who surrendered Friday to the FBI, were released on $500,000 bond each and ordered to surrender their passports at the arraignment, which was attended by Holmes' parents.

The indictment accuses Holmes, 34, and then 53-year-old Balwani of engaging in a multimillion-dollar scheme to defraud investors, and a separate scheme to defraud doctors and patients.

Both schemes involved efforts to promote Theranos by wildly overstating the technological capability of Theranos' blood-testing machines, as well as the company's revenue prospects and business contractual relationships, according to federal prosecutors.

Holmes and Balwani face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Apparently Elizabeth Holmes has a family connection to George Shultz, who in term, has always had a fascination for science in general. Elizabeth Holmes played on this facet and asked him to sit on the board. Shultz, in turn, got all of his colleagues at Hoover Institute to do the same. This is how people like Kissinger got to be on her board. They were all members of the Hoover Institute and friends of George Shultz.

Elizabeth Holmes represented to these men the prodigy daughter that they never had that they wish they had. She was their prodigy dream daughter. This was the psychological reason why they were so eager to believe in her. It was not sex appeal at all, as some have claimed in this forum. Elizabeth Holmes is an attractive enough women. But she has absolutely zero sex appeal and does not strike me as someone who could affect it.

The only exceptions I would make is for those super-rare tech-geniuses (99% male) who are sitting in laboratories since age 10 - plus are well equipped by their wealthy family to do so. I took part in chemistry olympics and there were some who had their own home laboratories and were doing various experiments by age 15. But the ones who won those competitions were much more intelligent than even 140-IQ level. Plus it takes tremendous interest and some solid financial resources. Most dads won't equip your lab for 50.000-100.000$ so you can play around with potentially dangerous substances (meaning that at that age you require professional assistance).

That guy was right that it's highly unlikely that a 19yo girl is going to do that. I would be tempted to believe it only if they mentioned her having a 100k lab and assistant by age 14/15 and having won international championships. But all we have is her learning Chinese with the help of a tutor - that is ridiculous for any high-achievers. True global high-achievers can learn 10+ languages on their own by age 25.

Funny how the blokes defend her because they know math geniuses and super-smart 14yo kids. Yeah - one genius I knew worked in a call-center because she was autistic while solving mathematical theorems (was able to use her IQ for shit) and the other was being a librarian (also shit social skills).

There is a reason why inventors/engineers like Edison, Tesla or Schauberger take not only genius, but immense skill and experience that simply takes massive time.

I hadn't even finished the book before the news broke today - this is epic. I wouldn't be so surprised were it not for the huge swath of DC insiders I thought for sure would somehow prevent any further investigation into criminal charges, a la the Hillary Clinton's seeming invulnerability to prosecution. Happy to see that this is not the case. With all of the evidence it is difficult to imagine the bitch (Holmes) won't see the inside of a jail cell for at least a short while.

There is no comparison between 23andMe and Theranos. The former is a legitimate company with a legitimate service. But do keep in mind that any service that "reads" and knows your genetics represents knowledge about you that would otherwise not exist that can potentially become available to law enforcement, other government agencies, and insurance companies. Do you really want these players to know your genetics?

Instead of realizing how close and taking his chips off the table, he crashed himself while playing health care COO with a delusional college drop out.

While at Theranos, he was the main one ensuring the security, i.e., keeping people from seeing the man behind the curtain. He also took every opportunity to add to a growing phalanx of loyal Indian employees. Anyone in the business knows full well it's not uncommon for Indians in IT to do this the first chance they get - diversity be damned.

In the end when it all fell apart, he was fired by the fake-baritone bug eyed Holmes. Hope he gets prison time.
