Quote:Ebola virus disease: Potential use of melatonin as a treatment.

Abstract

The purpose of this report is to emphasize the potential utility for the use of melatonin in the treatment of individuals who are infected with the Ebola virus. The pathological changes associated with an Ebola infection include, most notably, endothelial disruption, dissiminated intravascular coagulation and multiple organ hemorrhage. Melatonin has been shown to target these alterations. Numerous similarities between Ebola virus infection and septic shock have recognized for more than a decade. Moreover, melatonin has been successfully employed for the treatment of sepsis in many experimental and clinical studies. Based on these factors, since the number of treatments currently available is limited and the useable products are not abundant, the use of melatonin for the treatment of Ebola virus infection is encouraged. Additionally, melatonin has a high safety profile, is readily-available and can be orally-self administered; thus, the use of melatonin is compatible with the large scale of this serious outbreak.

Hey Rustler, when civilization breaks down and the infected are roaming the streets you're welcome in my bunker any time bro. Just bring a couple of girls with you so you don't fuck up the ratio.

Same goes for you, Brosemite.

Fuck it bro, I'm heading there right now. Sharing is caring. Just make sure we have enough shotgun shells to fend out the zombies.

I'll stop by some shopping centers along Tollway and grab a couple of cougars.

Brosemite can get some UTA hotties, that's if he doesn't get caught in traffic and catches Ebola since he lives in the boonies.

Re:racism, we do not want to derail this thread but it was interesting that on NPR yesterday, a guest stated that in opinion polls, fear of Ebola tracks along with a dislike of president Obama. Apparent subtext: If you're worried about Ebola, and want to stop travel from W. Africa, you're probably a racist. So that is officially out there in the discourse... Once again political correctness intrudes.

I just watched the NOVA documentary about it last night and I have to say I'm quite alarmed about it's spread in Africa. How exactly do they seriously expect to stop it? It seems like it's spreading is completely unchecked now, and the more it spreads there, the riskier it is for the whole world.

It also sounds like ZMapp is an anecdotally effective treatment and I think the U.S. Government should invest in ramping up production of this experimental drug.

If only you knew how bad things really are.

Dunning-Krüger effect. The "top men" in government think they and their underlings more competent than they are, and greatly underestimate the chance for failure in their policies as a result. Too, many lefties in the U.S. aren't cynical enough about human nature; it doesn't really occur to them that someone would lie about being exposed to Ebola, even though Thomas Duncan (Dallas Ebola dude) wasn't the first to do so.

The other thing, of course, is the modern PC echo-chamber's attitude towards Africa. The West, because of its sordid history of colonialism and slave-trading, owes African nations a debt that can't ever be repaid. So to turn away people from those nations would be unconscionable, even if letting them in has a steep cost in human life.

This is the key problem with cultural Marxist ideology: the fundamental disconnect with reality. People opposing travel restrictions can't argue their case logically, and now they can't argue it emotionally. The spread of Ebola to the West is going to drive some serious cracks into the rainbow coalitions on the left, and there's not much they can do about it.

Seattle scientist: Government 'underestimated' Ebola

For those who don't want to deal with the link:
Quote: SEATTLE -- A Seattle scientist who has studied Ebola for more than a decade says he feels federal officials underestimated the power of the current outbreak in West Africa.

Dr. Michael Katze is a University of Washington microbiologist who leads a team of researchers working to determine why some people survive Ebola and others do not.

On Wednesday, the day of the first Ebola death in the U.S., KING 5 sat down with Katze to get his perspective on the latest developments.

"I think our national response at the level of the CDC, the National Institute of Health and the World Health Organization has been really inadequate," he said. "And I think the only positive thing that could come out of this epidemic or outbreak is that people are better prepared for the next outbreak."

Katze said he was sad to learn of Thomas Eric Duncan's death in Dallas, but he also says it could happen again. He says he's seen a lot of misinformation and miscommunication by federal officials regarding Ebola.

"I think they underestimated the power of the outbreak. I think they said things like, 'There was zero risk of this, zero risk of that,' and I think, obviously, there's not zero risk of anything," he said.

Katze is most concerned about the misconceptions surrounding Ebola, from how it's transmitted to the so-called incubation period of 21 days. He says nothing is certain because there hasn't been enough research done on the deadly virus. For instance, he says there's still no way to be absolutely sure Ebola is only transmitted through bodily fluids. It could spread more easily than assumed.

"From a scientific point of view, none of these dogma, none of these statements are really based in any scientific fact, because the only model we've had thus far is research on non-human primates," said Katze.

His team has spent the last two years conducting experiments on mice as well, trying to determine how a person's genetics might impact their fate after being diagnosed with Ebola.

"You know, which of your genes, which of my genes, would determine whether you would live, die or develop hemorrhagic fever from Ebola virus infection," said Dr. Angela Rasmussen, who is one of Katze's research assistant professors.

Katze says that important research will continue in his Seattle laboratory, until they find the answers they're looking for.

As people walk that fine line between being cautious about Ebola and panicking about Ebola, he says education is incredibly important. Katze welcomes questions from the public through his website, where you can also read more about his team's Ebola research.

It just got a lot scarier:

http://www.dallasnews.com/news/local-new...-ebola.ece

Nurse who was treating Dallas patient now has Ebola. They'll try to spin this into being her fault, etc, but whatever faith people had in the health authorities is going to disappear now.

The key takeaway: most of the assurances that the authorities have been making are obviously false, based on some other strain. We've got a bunch of CDC scientists who just don't know very much, but keep "reassuring" people.

Losing credibility and public trust very quickly. Fucking idiots. The loss of public trust is more dangerous than anything else.

RE: Ebola Pandemic 2014
Well, we've been told it's "very difficult to catch." We've been assured this repeatedly.
But now we've got two cases in the western world where health care workers have caught it.
Some times health care workers are stupid, of course, but you would hope they know a little more about dealing with infectious diseases than the average person.
And yet they still got infected.

Mr. Lemon is right, a lot of what we're hearing is based on previous strains of Ebola and may not apply to this strain. I don't think it's airborne, because the infections we've been seeing don't line up with that. We're not seeing people who had no close contact with the patient being infected, for instance. But this is spreading far more than it should be. Perhaps it stays alive longer on surfaces than other strains? Maybe it takes a far smaller amount to infect you? This isn't my line of work by any means, but something is very clearly wrong here.

I was with everybody else who thought this was blown out of proportion at first, but this is starting to scare me.

Yes, race trolling and black victim complexes - like you frequently also participate in - is the single reason why air traffic to West Africa hasn't been shut down long ago. Obama knows full well that the Al Sharptons, Jesse Jacksons and SPL Centers of this world would cause all kinds of hell over it.

RE: Ebola Pandemic 2014
The thing that worries me is how completely unseriously every authority involved is treating this.

This outbreak has a 71% mortality rate. It's a death sentence if you catch it. There is no cure. Yet all I hear from the talking heads is that a) it's really hard to catch b) it's only bad in Africa because they have ideal conditions and don't have "modern infrastructure" to deal with it.

a) is quickly becoming a lie. Now the CDC has basically gone on record saying that it's the nurse's fault for getting it because of protocol deviation. So the goalposts have moved. It's gone from "you'd have to be an idiot and bathe in infected bodily fluids to get it" to "you'd have to be an idiot and not follow CDC protocol 100%".

So which is it? Is it hard to get or not? The CDC can't have it both ways. You can't say its not dangerous and then say it's the nurse's fault for getting it by not following protocol. Because if this hits the general population, most people I know aren't walking around in hazmat suits with the CDC infectious disease protocol in the back of their mind. And if it is dangerous enough that we need to be following this protocol 100%, why aren't we screening for this at the border?

b) is a big worry. I wonder if Africa is truly ideal conditions for a virus to spread as opposed to say, a densely populated modern city connected to other densely populated modern cities with rapid public transport. Something tells me that an airport, a subway, a Greyhound bus would make pretty nice conduits for spreading a disease. Hell, look at how fast the flu spreads. As far as I know, African villages don't have anything close to the density or transportation that major US cities have.

I get the feeling there is some massive hubris at play here. Western medicine does not contain some magic that makes us immune to or able to combat something like ebola. Even if we can bring the mortality rate down from 71% through better care, shouldn't we be taking precautions to make sure that we minimize the chances of it happening here to begin with?
