As I've mentioned before, I'm 46. I'm fairly successful, no real complaints in any of the really important departments of my life.

This is what I will tell my sons when they are in their late teens and early twenties.

Decide on what end-state you want to reach in your life—then organize your life in order to reach that end-state. In other words, decide now—when you are young—the kind of old man you wish to be, and then use that as your guide in your day-to-day actions.

When I am 85, I want to have a slew of children and grandchildren whom I see at least once a week for family barbecues. I want these children and grandchildren to be leaders of their society, leaders who ask for and defer to my opinion on the challenges of their lives.

When I am 85, I do not want to have any regrets about opportunities I did not take. Be they women, business opportunities, or whatever else, I want my 85 year old self to wince at the times I face-planted—but not regret even a single time when I didn't have the balls to at least try. Regret is always worse than failure.

When I am 85, I want to have enough accumulated capital that I am unconcerned about my material or medical well-being. Enough money that money is never a concern. At the same time, I do not want to be a slave to my fortune.

When I am 85, I want my descendants to be living in a place where long-term political and environmental catastrophes will not affect them. The US is not such a place.

When I am 85, I want my photo album to have pics of me everywhere worth visiting on this earth.

When I am 85, and the heart attack hits me, the only regret I want to have is that my death will keep me from doing the cool thing I had planned for next week.

When I am no more, I want my pallbearers—my sons and grandsons—to feel genuine sorrow that I won't be around anymore.

Do make plans with this is mind that you might not live past tomorrow and yet you might live past 85, don't deny yourself an opportunity to enjoy and experience something new, don't postpone your happiness.

There was an article circulating on the forum in another thread and we have hashed this topic before but when people at extreme ages were asked what would they have done differently in their life ? majority of them said they wished they would have enjoyed more in their earlier life.

^ Yes the biggest grievances of men on their deathbeds were working too much, losing touch with friends, and not making enjoying life a top priority at most times.

If you are (white male) non-smoker, eat healthy, exercise, and have access to good health care, you can expect to live to around 87. Yes, we might die at any time, but that's the statistical reality to plan for. And (again from statistics) usually there is decent quality of life for all but the last 2-3 years.

That's a long time. You pass the HALF WAY mark around 44. Long range thinking is important.

You might not be banging hot women at 80, but you won't be interested in doing so either, and you can be genuinely happy at that age, if you have looked after your health, finances, and relationships.

At 80, waking up in your sunny villa, eating an organic breakfast and holo-skyping with your son, before your assistant takes you to the art gallery and then to meet with the young entrepreneur you're mentoring, will be pretty sweet.

I know many men on their late 80's that would love nothing more to be able to get some young pussy. One guy I play poker with that is getting close to that age said "I never thought I would see the day I outlived my dick"

While a man's priorities change over the decades, a nice piece of young trim is always desirable.

I think there's a balance.

Don't live working hard so much to 'enjoy your future' while sacrificing the younger years, but at the same time don't party like fools say 'yolo' and fail to invest in yourself.

Work hard by all means, but make sure you make time to enjoy the present moments.

My wife and I have a solid plan for retirement, we intend to marry each one of our children off to a cook or chef from each of these countries:

Mexico
India
Brazil
Italy
Japan
French Canada

Then we can have excellent dinners every day as we make our rounds to visit all the grandkids. I've been watching alot of Master Chef recently.

I'm not sure but I believe that the Stoic philosophers routinely practiced this: imagining themselves looking back at their lives from the view of an old man (e.g. 85). Did they live the life they wanted to?

They recommend doing this, every now and then engaging in the "death bed" perspective.

@RawGod - sorry to break it to you but the chances of living to 87 aren't high. To think that way is dumb, I don't care what race you are or what access to health care you have.
We are not eating the same quality food out parents grew up on, the food is mostly garbage GMO. Modern life tends to stress us out more, Christ I see so many young guys that are out of shape. A lot of people are on medication for things like diabetes, high blood pressure or ulcers.
Sitting in front of a computer i am sure will have long term effects, some schools have banned wifi. Cellphones will produce a lot of cancers in the future, cancer is on the rise.

Live for today my friend, I have been to more funerals than weddings and it's not old people either.

Man, every generation thinks that things are worse than ever, people are living less healthy lives than ever, some new technology (cellphones) is going to make everybody sick...

Meanwhile, life expectancy is rising pretty much everywhere and every year.

It's striking how much more inclined we are to imagine catastrophes rather than miracles. Predictions of the future are generally worthless anyway, but it's so easy to convince oneself that all these bad things that you imagine will come to pass and just forget about the fact that 30 or 40 years from now many branches of medicine could easily be completely unrecognizable. Indeed, there are very good reasons to believe that by that time many types of cancer -- for example -- will be curable and/or preventable.

So much fear of the future, and so little imagination or even curiosity about it... it's a shame. And I'm not singling you out at all, rudebwoy -- I see this kind of thinking everywhere, both on this forum and very generally.

I believe there are reasons why people are inclined to think this way, but that is another matter.

^ People like to quote life expectancy averages, again it is averages. I have a Balkan friend in Canada who has been to at least ten funerals in the last year. None of the people who died are anywhere close to 80, these are real life facts and all died of cancer. Most guys I know don't have both parents alive or at most one parent alive, I am in my 40s. So much for modern medicine!
My old man in his 70s reads obituaries, don't ask me why but I tell him to quit that shit. He often makes comments about guys my age dying.
When was the last time you went to a nursing home? I have a friend that works in one and it is full of old women, the men are outnumbered greatly.
I am being a realist and basing my views on what I see not read. Again live for today and live in the moment. I also have a few friends who have died in bike accidents and car accidents, that is luck of the draw.
Sure it is easy to talk about modern medicine, but do people actually look any better or healthier! I know one thing they look fatter, then again that might be a western Anglo thing.

Rudebwoy, you seem very negative and have trouble imagining the long term. Still, the actuaries have calculated that someone with my vital stats has a 50/50 chance of making it to 87. So yes there's a 50% chance of dying earlier, and it could be much sooner, or indeed later. I am realistic, and I live both to enjoy today and not to mess up my body and finances leaving me miserable but still alive at 87 like my grandparents.

For example, your friends dying of bike accidents is not the luck of the draw. They chose to participate in the single most dangerous lifestyle activity outside of smoking. Look at the stats on motorbike accidents. Riding for a year is like driving for 28 years in terms of chances of having an accident. I was considering getting a bike but decided against it for exactly that reason.

I'm not particularly young and I've been to plenty of funerals. I do know however what actuarial stats and risk factors are, and never stated that I will definitely make it to 87, only the fact that 50% of people with my profile will.
