Thanks guys, that was very informative and thank you for actually giving me advice i really appreciate it. I'm going to start studying Portuguese now and hope for the best, but after listening to what you said, i think i might just stay put in rio for the majority of my trip... like you said i think i'm biting off more than i can chew and will be disappointed as result. thanks again

I recommend looking into doing a Pimsleur course if you decide on portuguese or spanish. Helped me a ton to get my spanish up to a good level. I was conversational halfway through the 45 hour course, but I had the benefit of knowing portuguese already.

Completing the course, one a simple a hour a day should get you decently conversational.
