Thanks for the info. So you're getting 25/$, which is reasonable. I'll bring cash but at these exchange rates I'm not too worried about +/- 10%.

For many months, I got a better rate at exchange booths than ATM but since the February devaluation I get a better rate at ATM than at the cash exchange.

The UAH just went to 26 to the dollar.

Kiev better sign a peace deal soon because they need that IMF money (the IMF now wants the war to end before it considers a bailout).

(02-11-2015 09:00 AM)The Ligurian Wrote:  In November I travelled to a town in east Ukraine. I turned up at a hotel and checked in to what was possibly the best room I've ever stayed in on my travels. Surprising since it was a provincial town off the beaten path. It really was a fantastic place. I paid 250 Gryvna a night for the room which at the time was exactly £10. Anyway I was just going through my papers just now and discovered the hotels business card. I just called them to find out their prices. They have not inflated at all, it's still 250 Gryvna. Therefore that room now costs £6 a night. Therefore for £180 a month I could live in a great room in the centre of town, with free wifi, clean sheets every few days, a disco in the basement and that's before asking for a discount. Added to that the fact that it's probably a good indicator that prices have not inflated for other things that were already stupid cheap like meals and clubs. Hence I think it would be possible to live a decent enough life for £500 a month in a provincial town. That makes it as cheap as India but without the amoebic dysentery or girls with moustaches.

I was not planning on returning until May but if prices are that cheap I might go for a month asap. Who knows how long this will last?

@Ligurian, if you don't mind can you share the name of this hotel?
Btw, I see 4 star non-western hotels in Kiev can be had now for $40/night though I still can't understand how places like Hilton Kyiv can keep prices at $270+/night and get any business???

In advance, forgive me if this was mentioned somewhere in the 16 page thread...

But is anyone getting ONS in Ukraine? Seems like these girls are more frigid than a Mullah's wife!

I've read through a few other Ukraine threads on the forum and the same theme repeats itself. Strings of coffee dates without any bangs.
I'm just curious if anyone is having any legit success there.

James, since you have no return ticket to worry about, I suggest not seeing the same girl day after day. Space out the dates and use your extra time to date multiple girls in parallel. You might find it takes at least a week to bang a girl, regardless of how many dates. So just see her once a week and you'll get the bang before you know it.

How do other nightlife venues compare to your trip August? Or have you only gone to Shooters? BTW, in Kharkiv, February might be the quietest month of the year for nightlife.

JamesRodi,

Did I read that right that the Chicago's apt cost 400k hryvnia last year. Which was about 50k USD. Was it a good location? Doing the math now seems like it is about usd15k or less. That's not bad to be in a city with hot chicks. But there is that whole conflict with Russia thing. Thanks.

No need to be pushy. Wait several days before asking out. Make her sweat you a little. If she says she's busy or whatever, lay low for a while, the ball is in her court.

Tuthmosis gave some first-date advice that IMO works well in Ukraine. Have dates on weekdays so they are perceived as more casual. Keep the date short, and don't go for a makeout. First get her back to your flat. Once you're alone with her, all bets are off, push to failure.

^^If she bought it last year while 8:1 it be about 50k but that is very cheap for Kiev. I can't imagine where it is located or how small it is. Often they pay for renovation afterwards.

Flats usually get adjusted based on dollar/Euro peg.

Yes, but it was on a plan. It has just been completed now. 420k was the price for just a shell unit. It cost another 200k to put tiles in, build the kitchen, cabinets etc...

So all in 600 something she said.

Location wasn't ideal. It's 20-25 min from Kreschatyk with the Metro and then another 20 minutes to walk to the building.

Keep in mind that this was before the Hryvna collapsed. What happens in extreme inflationary environments such as this is that the property prices basically goes up with inflation possibly with some delay as local salaries don't reflect the drop in purchasing power yet.

she must have bought in one of the new buildings at the edge of the city..possibly left bank?
15 minutes on metro get you to last stop in the old days. Now they added more stations.

If she took out the loan in local currency, she would be winning atm.

Keeping the dates short is something I've been unable to do so far. I've loved talking to the women and they keep suggesting second and third venues we can go to whilst out. The places they suggest doesn't incur any extra costs on my behalf either (not that I'd care) so it's not like I'm being taken for a ride money wise so i've happily obliged. I shall start keeping them to an hour or so though unless I'm able to go home to my place.

@James, not getting laid in Kiev is really nothing to worry about if one is there short-term. I was there for 4 days last year and only got to second base, however the sight-seeing, laughter, and conversations I had with my dates more than made up for any further expectations I would have had and beat most dates I have with the western whales in USA.
Btw, one is definitely selling themselves short if they do not grasp any Russian. You are throwing 50% of the female population "out the window" if not conversational, so even the first level of Pimsleur Russian would come in-handy and if you can memorize 100 or so words of Ukrainian even better!

Quote:German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said that sanctions scheduled to be brought into force against Russia on Monday will remain in place.

This comes in spite of a peace deal signed on Thursday for east Ukraine, where Russian-backed militants have been fighting Ukrainian forces for some ten months.

Merkel has also indicated that much remains to be done to secure peace in Ukraine's east and has not ruled out further punitive meaures against Moscow.

Angela Merkel, German Chancellor: "We are more than aware that a lot of efforts still need to be made, that is why we keep all the possibilities of response open. When it works well we will support this process and will be gratified to note this, and if it doesn't work then we don't exclude imposing further sanctions."

The new Ukraine peace plan envisions a ceasefire coming into force on Sunday morning. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and a number of other world leaders have indicated that pressure must be maintained on Russia and its proxy militias in east Ukraine if the truce is be successful.

I like the "Short and Sweet" concept especially on the first date but if you're having a good time and its not costing you anything extra then why not just stay on the date a little longer? You can always eject after bouncing to the new spot anyway. I think it helps establish the "relationship" and her familiarity more with you if you change locations. Then you can always just leave saying that you have to be up early the next day but you want to meet again (but not setting anything up yet) and go from there.

I am a big fan of cutting my losses early on these dates if you aren't feeling it. You're unlikely to get ONS most of the time anyway so short and sweet is the goal but if it's flowing I think building up more rapport and then "leaving her wanting more" works sometimes.

Anyone visited or know anyone that's visitied ( or in ) Kharkov?

My friend is trying to get me to visit within the next month or two and keeps saying "the city is fine nothing's going on here" . Of course, I subtly remind them that the war could be on their doorstep even though nothing is currently "going on" in Kharkov itself.

Just wondering how safe/ well advised a two or three week to Kharkov would be around this time....

In August I only went out once and that was Shooter's (by accident). I was sitting in the restaurant adjacent and watched this parade of hotties walking into the club. Naturally I had to see what was going on. So it's still the only Club I've been to and I won't be back.

There was a number of things that annoyed me there yesterday but I won't elaborate upon it as it has nothing to do with the women.

It wasn't quiet, there were plenty of people there but most of the women left as soon as ladies night was over and guys were allowed in at 00:00.

Wednesday ladies night is the only night to go to Shooters

Kharkov is safe at the moment, no outward signs of war here. There are more police around, higher chance you'll be asked to show your ID. I've seen them checking random people in the street. I went for a run along the Kharkov river which probably looked suspicious since it was 0 C. The police asked me why I was jogging in the cold. I didn't have any ID whatsoever on me, they let me go anyway. Now I only run at the gym.

During the day, shops, cafes and sidewalks are pretty busy. Life seems normal. February isn't the best time for nightlife in Kharkov but it's not completely dead. I've never been here in March, hopefully the nightlife picks a bit.
