I have a few questions and I need your help:

1) I noticed that you have to carry id. Do you recommend just taking copies with you and is that acceptable? Should the wallet be left as well?

2) What do you recommend to prevent or deal with theft and as well pick pockets? Do you recommend leaving the laptop at home?

3) Is people drugging your drinks an actual concern and if so what steps can be taken for a big drinker like me?

4) What do you recommend for getting phone service?

I realize these may sound like stupid questions so I appreciate your time in offering any insight here.

I use my ID copies most of the time, once you are in the country. They will ask for it when you are using your credit card. I was stopped by a police officer a few months ago walking late at night. I showed him my passport photocopy and as I recall my actual driver license. It was fine. I think you will need your actual passport for certain things though, like getting a phone account, wiring money, etc. I only carry my real passport if I know I will need it that day.

After 1.5 years here I have not been mugged or burglarized. If you are staying in a place with security you should be fine. Mugging by gunpoint is the most likely scenario, or house cleaner taking your cash. I have friends that have had those things happen. I recommend not carrying a lot of cash, but instead leave it in the hotel well hidden.

I haven't heard about drugging of drinks. Don't hang out with skanks and pimps, maybe? This probably is only an issue in places like Sosua where there is an extreme amount of Pros and general thuggery. I would recommend taking extra care when in Sosua and Boca Chica. But as long as you are not letting thugs near your drinks you should be alright. More of a concern for me is just being aware of where people are in relation to you while walking, especially if you are alone at night. Never had a problem, but I watch my back as machete and pistol attacks do happen.

You can get a local phone chip for like $5. Then it's about $12 for 30 minutes of prepaid talk time. There are better plans but I always end up just using texts mostly and whatsapp.

I never used my passport but once to rent a motorcycle. I carried around my drivers license when I was driving. I refuse to carry my passport unless I really need it. I only used my card for purchases a handful of times, but was never asked for ID.

I didn't find the DR to be very dangerous when compared to a place like Colombia or Brazil. My advise is this: keep your passport, money, and important things locked up in a safe in your hotel. When you need money, go to the ATM, take out as much as you can, and walk right back to your hotel and leave the money you don't need for the day in a safe. Hell, in the DR I even felt safe enough to walk around a bit with $300 on me. In Brazil I would have taken the money out and gone directly home with it. I walked around all hours of night with a friend, and even 11 or 12 o clock with just a girl. Obviously there are neighborhoods where you wouldn't want to do that, just like in the US.

Also the driver that everyone recommends just sent me a quote for $200 a day when everyone said it was $50. Is there any other options you'd recommend for having a driver? I speak Spanish but I just don't want to 'fight the fight" every day with the cab drivers.

I didn't use thedriver once and got everywhere I needed to without a problem. It pretty much depends on your personal adventure tolerance. I found it fun as hell to negotiate down cab drivers, drink alcohol in the passenger seat, talk shit, and then only pay $4-10 USD for a ride across town. Seems like there are an equal amount of cabs and regular cars, very plentiful at least in La Capital.

So why did the Driver hike it up so much? New car? I do think 50 is low (especially for Ali-drama) as he's at it 20 hours a day.

$200 a day is steep. That's a lot of money in the DR. You could probably stay at one of the nicest hotels in Santo Domingo for that price. I don't mind taxis. Shit, I'll even take the carritos that cost 25 pesos.

If that includes gas then its not so bad. But in my experience most taxi drivers are happy to earn even $10 within an hour.

Almost every taxi driver here will give you his card, with his personal phone number on it. Collect a few of those from drivers that seem cool, or who speak english. You might even ask the hotel to request an english speaking taxi driver when calling the taxi company. Just plan that it might take an extra 30 minutes for him to arrive. Be sure to get his card and number.

I have always felt safe in every taxi here. Worst thing that's happened is demanding more money because of mistakes they made in getting lost. But that is rare.

I think driver does an amazing job. But if you are on a budget you can spend less. I'd say 60% of the taxi drivers here will try to be very fair priced, with 40% wanting to squeeze a little extra money out of you. But its easy to tell the cool ones in my experience. I would recommend telling him where you want to go the first day (for example, calle venezuela, agora mall, etc.) If he turns out to be cool, then you might ask for recommendations of spots to visit.

Before you get in the taxi for the first time, tell him what you want to pay;

"200 pesos por calle venezuela, si?"

Otherwise he might jack the price up later.

1) I got berated by a bouncer at a casino club for having my passport on me. So I just used my phone with picks of my passport and id's. It worked fine when I got shaken down by the police driving a rental car around. Story here:

2) I use my front pockets for money and phone. Harder to snag.

3) Don't get sloppy drunk, watch your drink. I don't know if it's a problem, but I'm always careful out anywhere.

4) I used Claro. Any mall is going to have a place to get service. My cell takes multiple sim cards so I just switch from country to country.
