Here's an interesting scenario for you. You're running some lucrative hustle be it legal or illegal and suddenly get arrested and charged for something and are facing 10 years in prison.

You've acquired a decent amount of liquid cash through your efforts. You want to stash it away safely somewhere where the cops can't find it or get it so when you come out of prison you can have money and resume your lifestyle.

How would the great financial minds of the forum handle this

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, although in a long term they might not be very secure because we don't yet know if they are going to last. But if/when Bitcoin stabilizes for a long term use, you can literally have a million of dollars completely in your head(brainwallet private key).

look for countries without an extradition treaty with your native country and put the money in a bank there.

I'm assuming you're American, if so I'd head straight to Cambodia, they take USD direct and a de-facto permanment visa is very easy to get, just pay $300 a year for a 'business visa' and you're free to do as you please

Split the money up into multiple stashes and bury them in various areas in the wilderness, using notable land marks to remember the location. Perhaps draw out a map of your stash locations and have that put away somewhere safe as well.

I'd also try to convert a substantial portion of it into bitcoin as was mentioned previously. There are services popping up that can pair you up with local bitcoin dealers that will give you coins in exchange for real world cash.

Buy bullion bars / coins of platinum and store it remotely. Should not be too hard. Or trust it to your close relative, who should secure it for you. Current prices are at around $1400
an oz.

I'm amazed how easy it could be money launder through bullion bars. Get a 1kg bar of platinum, coat it with a small silver lining and declare it as a silver bar. Easy way to smuggle money.

Platinum is twice as dense as silver. Granted I'm more familiar with precious metals than most, but if you handed me a "silver" bar that was actually platinum it would be obvious you were up to something.

I suppose you could make tungsten "medallions" that had a gold or platinum core, if you had the right machinery. The density of pure tungsten is very close to gold and not that far off from platinum, and since elemental tungsten is quite hard (in terms of Mohs hardness) the inspector couldn't just scratch through the tungsten with a knife to see the core if the cladding was moderately thick. Still, that would be an involved process on both ends, as you would need to reclaim the core afterward. I think cutting the medallions in half or in quarters and dissolving the core in aqua regia would do, but then you still have to get back to a chunk of bullion. Better have a decent chemist on your crew.

Yeah but where do you put the cash, coins, gold, bonds etc? They would raid your safety deposit box or storage facility. Just say you have no friends or family to hold the goods for you.

I'd keep my stash in American dollars and give it to someone that I trust my life with.

Storing wealth in precious metals doesn't make sense...Aren't you guys assuming that prices are remaining constant or at least within 10% of purchase price...for ten yrs..?

Convert your assets to physical gold/silver/whatever (to protect against inflation) and bury it in the middle of the desert, forest, etc. Ideally you'd bury it in an area that is at no risk of being developed, so a national forest or other federal owned land is your best bet.

Added bonus is you get to chuckle to yourself in prison about owning a buried treasure chest just like them old school pirates.

Now, there are two reasons why you'd want to stash money away in case of arrest. One is so you can pay bail, in which you'd like to have them in a convenient location, and highly liquid, ie. with a relative, and the other is if Uncle Sam or whatever other Western government tries to seize your assets.

If you're an American, get a second passport and go to Cuba. While you're going to have no luck as an American, if you've got another passport you can often travel to Cuba, possibly with visas, but it's doable. Find a way to get your cash in and open an account. Now, any foreigner can open an account in Cuba. You better bet that Fidel isn't going to hand over my cash stash in Cuban banks over to any American authority. When you're out of jail, simply return to Cuba, find a way to get cash out, and voila. You should be able to wire money out to another bank, provided that the other bank isn't in the United States. Alternatively, live like a king in Cuba. I hear it's beautiful this time of year.

Buy something that appreciates, like precious metals, and let a trusted friend or relative hold on to it. When you get out of prison, sell it, and give them a cut of whatever profits you end up with. If you get shanked in prison I guess they can give it to your family.

If you wanted to hide things you might want to have alternative identity. (not condoning it btw)

Paying for a storage facility up front in cash under a female name that has no connection to you might work.

Or having a safety deposit box also under a female name that has no connection to you.

If you were being investigated by the police, its very easy for them to get warrants to search and seize things under your name, you're gf/wife names, immediate blood relatives names. It's a lot more difficult to get a warrant for a name that you've never met and don't even know.
Basically hiding in plain sight.
A guy i grew up with did this with his money. He spent 5 yrs in prison and when he got out his storage facility was untouched. The police seized everything thing he had and stuff he put in his mothers and gf's name.
He never went there and the place wasn't super strict about government ID. They only cared about the money each month.

I'm slowly buying gold as savings/rainy day fund. The great thing about gold is that it takes up close to no space. Over here in Thailand they have a small gold bar (1 Baht, not confused with the currency), which is 15.2 grams and worth currently $620. Very small and easily hidden somewhere. Excellent way to hide your stash like a pirate.

AML (Anti-Money Laundering laws) are getting stricter and stricter.

Most (western) banks won't accept bearer bonds if you bring them phisically.

Anyway, if I was in that kind of situation I would plan ahead.

I am not an expert nonetheless, so don't rely on my ideas and judgement.

Leave it with trusted loved one. I wouldnt trust bitcoin or any electronic mode of keeping it. If you wana maybe make sum money or at the very least hedge against inflation buy a monster box of silver

Stupid question but what do they do about people with gold crowns or fillings in jail?
I'd just get my teeth fixed with gold and keep some of my cash with me

In the case of my friend he paid up front for 5 years in cash.

I think nowadays they'll want a credit card to charge you a monthly fee.
