A student at the University of Oxford faced rape charges, was on bail for six weeks, and now, following an investigation, charges against him have been dropped.

He believes those accused of rape should have the right to anonymity until initial investigations had been carried out by police.

If this was the case, false rape claims would probably drop by about 90%. After all, what good is a false rape accusation if you can't ruin a man's life?

The case for giving accused men anonymity is at least as strong as it is for concealing the identities of accusers, which is the routine practice by media organizations.

Assuming that you could get past the Free Speech issues, (and government limiting what the press can cover is a free speech issue by definition)

How do you enforce this right?

If anonymous university student is accusing the Sigma Chi of rape after her "secret" bukkake session, and TotalFratMove.com gets the names of accused dudes and decides to publish...

What do you do?

Try to send those bloggers to Federal "Pound Me in the Ass" prison?
Fine them?

innocent until proven guilty. both parties should be anonymous. false rape accusations should have the same punishment as rape.

I think everyone should remain anonymous, regardless of what they have been charged with, until proven guilty.

Putting peoples faces on newspapers/television for being charged with a crime, and then not even mentioning it when they have been found not guilty, is ridiculous.

I recall Tom Leykis covering the alleged rape by Kobe Bryant, and how he was careful to never say the accuser's name because of a court-issued gag order. What actually happens, I'm not sure. First amendment schmirst amendment...
